Byron

Guitar solo in the middle of Annie Chrisitian...

The "We need a new breed....leaders stand up, organize!...Let's Go!" part in Sexuality, with the sudden burst of drums underscoring it...

The silence, then very last note of Shy...

The last razor-like horn run at the end of Billy Jack Bitch...

The way Prince says/sings "Dig me, now" in the song Lovesexy...

one of my fore most memories of liking prince as a 12 yr old back in 1988 had to be were the lines ...'the reason why my voice is so clear is cuz theres no smack in my brain!'

My picks at this moment:

Adore - Near the end of the song you can hear Prince sing twice in the background 'adore youuuuu....', these background lines are sung so amazingly beautfull

If i was your girlfriend - Lets try to imagine what silence looks line (great line), repeated three times, the music getting more silent also, and then the abrupt ending of the song.... genious

Mia Bocca (the Jill Jones version) - the final part of the song, after the rythmical three notes, when the trumpet solo starts, the orchestra comes back in fully, and the song ends with 8 notes played by strings, woodwinds and brass.

Crystal Ball - the final part of the song, after the orchestra has gone 'bezerk' the song goes back to its basic motif, some eerie strings still in the background at first, then just rhythem and voice, it just sounds very creepy, alienated.

Mountains (extended 12 inch-version) - The final with the funky organ, horns, guitar, bass and drums - just mindblowing

Shockadelica - the opening part, with the first verse, the hard, nasty beat, the camille voice, they just work perfect together here

Still waiting - great boogiesh piano playing in the end of this song, a shame the song fades out to soon

Thieves in the temple (extended version) - in the second part of this song there is a great hyperactive part which starts with 'get your foot on a rock, let me show you how to clock', background vocals by Boni (or was it Rosie? i am not sure), funky rhythem guitar, a syncopated drum machine and some women moaning, a part that makes me go 'wow!' everytime i hear it

Feel you up - Near the end of the song the chorus is repeated and Candy joins in with a playfull saxophone riff, its a bit cheesy sounding, but somehow it just works greatly with the poppy melody, the camille vocals and the melody.

Gold - Near the end of the song, after the guitar solo has ended, you hear the voice of the 'NPG operator', welcome to the dawn, your no a member of the new power generation some strange sound effects (winded up tapes rolling back?) and you hear the sound of a door being opened or something like that (any thoughts what this might be, orgers?), two hard notes, a part that is a bit cheesy also, but it fits perfectly with the epic nature of the song. I also love to play this song very loud.

So, these are my picks for the moment, i could come up with tens more, maybe some other time wink

Reading these posts makes me think, hey, why not name a few more, i mean, it is one of the reasons why i like his music so much: the unexpected twistes in his song, original solo's, exciting bridges, mindblowing finals.

Okay here i go:

Forever in my life - the guitar playing in the end, it comes very unexpected because the rest of the song is just drummachine, vocals and background vocals, the guitar playing is a fresh twist that makes it a better song

Hot Thing - The first saxophone solo (by Eric Leeds), one of the best i ever heard on a Prince song.

Automatic - the last part of the song, after the part with the females moaning ends the song goes back to its basic motif, you then realise even more how brilliant that drum pattern is programmed.

Dolphin - the last chorus, i believe Prince lead vocals are backed by two (or even more) different backing vocal tracks, that just sound great together, also adding up to the excitement is the great, urgent drumming of Michael Bland.

Holy River - the line: People say they love you and they wanna help, how can they help when they cant help themselves? the more they say they you love, the more you just wanna die... I dont know, he just sounds very sincere and emotional singing that line

The Dark - the bridge, the strange thing is it sounds like some bridge from a Beatles song, with those trumpets and background vocals, while the Dark is a soul / traditional R&B ballad, but it fits nicely in the song, and i love the way Prince is singing during this bridge (a more raw, natural style then the way he often is using his voice)

Around the World in a day - The whole song sounds quite different from what the 'general' public, who discovered Prince on Purple Rain, might expect, but the synth solo (after Prince sings 'Papa, i think i wanna dance!') near the end is very much like the music on 1999 and Purple Rain, but it doesnt sound out of place, its even gives an energetic 'boost' to the final of this song'

Sometimes its snows in april - Okay, its not a 10 seconds moment, but i really love the fact you can hear the strings crack, and the echo's inside the acoustic guitar, i tend to think that i can also hear a chair crack or move during the song, i always play this song loud to hear this accents. Most producers would mix away these kind of sounds, Prince doesnt on these song, and i ads up to the intimate sound and lyrics of the song

Rave unto the joy fantastic (from the 'Paard van Troje' boot) - Prince and the band are creating a long jam, at some moment Prince plays a fast and absolutely brilliant guitar solo. It sounds like the solo is doubled (I am not sure if Miko Weaver is playing along, it more sounds like some device or sound effect that Prince uses), but the first moment i heard this solo i was flabbercasted, like hearing some of Miles Davis brilliant trumpetsolos.

Dance On - The whole song is allready very original, one of the most extreme (but still catchy) songs in Princes' catalogue. Every line offers new surprises and sounds, the best part is near the end, when the chorus is accompanied by some very fast guitar riff, it sounds very much like something a death metal band would play, not the thing you expect in a Prince song.

Okay, thats it for now.

It's called an "octave" effect, because it does just that - it generates a "second sound" which is the same note an octave higher.
Prince never used this very often... too bad, I think it can be an amazing sound.

In Glam Slam where he sings 'It's alright.. it's ok' that whole break actually in that number.

I have to co-sign all the stuff said about The Beautiful Ones and the end... Wendy said stuff about him being 'more in touch with his creativity' than anyone else at that point.

Do Me Baby has a similar emotional floodgate in the middle.

But my favourite bit ever... has to be the guitar solo at the end of Let's Go Crazy.. I let out some pee just then.

The intro to WHEN DOVE'S CRY
the solo on I COULD NEVER TAKE THE PLACE OF YOUR MAN from the SOTT movie
Screaming "You lied" on Thieves in the Temple
the chorus on "How Come You Don't Call me... Anymore"
or at least the part where he sings "Down on my knees, begging you please..."

The beginning on America from the video (the live version)

the solo on Purple Rain

and probably the best was:

The emotional 2nd verse on Wally when it sounded like he was going to cry

now that it is about midnight I can officially say "PSYCH! Happy April fools day fool!"

I knew this would get some attention but what can you do? Trust me, I'm just as interested in hearing Wally as anyone else.

The headphone thing is a must. I truly relate to what you mean!

Many of the aforementioned others are worthy as well...the Beautiful Ones' scream, any 10 secs of Purple Rain wink

Ill nominate (1/2 to be different, 1/2 because it is in my head every frickin' second of the day for the last week!)

I've been listening to The Crystal Ball discs today and I forgot about "So Dark." There's the part at the end that always seems to speak to me... "Don't understand why U hurt me, hurt me, hurt me, hurt me here!
Just leave me (In the dark)" When his voice gets all falsetto, I almost get teary-eyed.
