Wow, thats quite a limb you are going out on there. You predict it will fall fast. Do you have any other revelations to share with us? (Insert something clever here)

Whether it's music or painting or handknit cashmere sweaters, if you make your art available for public consumption you are competing for attention. The key is attention. you're not an artist, are you? Mm. No comment. I'd rather my argument stand on its own merit regardless of my chosen field.

Prince has really capitalized on two things to get to this point.
1. He has fully embraced the nostalgic fervor for his music. A decade ago, I got the sense that he was trying his best to run away from his classics, as an "albatross" around his neck. The appearances on the 2004 Grammys and RRHOF ceremony, featuring his 80's classics, really catapaulted him back into the public consciousness, though he had made a bunch of notable music for years before then. His presence alone illuminates what is missing from the pop music scene (though many deserving artists don't get the visibility he has). 2. He mastered the loopholes and intricacies of the new system. He was really the first superstar to master the art of selling and marketing product via the internet and he's worked out (most) of the early kinks to operate as his own label and promoter. He also used the CD sale/concert tie-in to take advantage of the system to sell a lot of product. It is also important to note that in this era of mp3 downloads, iTunes and rampant piracy, it might not take as many sales to hit the top spot as it used to. That being said, in the last several years, few if any have been able to do what Prince has done: with no single atop the radio chart and with no video in "heavy ro," he's got the No. 1 album. I thought I'd see him atop the charts again, someday, but I still can't believe it. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Thanks for the update. I will be watching that tonight! I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Lots of us actually didnt believe he could be #1 again without ´cheating´...in my case, I didnt doubt his skills as a hitmaker, but after the WB battle, I thought other record companies wouldn´t like to invest much money to promote a ´one record deal´ artist, without long-term contracts. I am happy he proved the world he still can rock the charts.

The bottom line is that the album is #1:
-with no tour dates set ... - little to no promotion compared to Rave & Musicology, (purple ticket contest could be entered without purchase of album) -no hit single in heavy rotation, -no hot guest producers -no guest rappers or popular singers -and no Wendy & Lisa And I think this just bugs the crap out of some people. The album may take a huge drop next week, but this week he is number one and some folks said it would never happen again. I just like the fact that they were wrong. And for the record I only purchased 1 cd. I don't give a tinker's damn about the contest because I never win stuff like that. . [Edited 3/29/06 15:37pm] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

gotta remember though, ol' boy did things a helluva lot more differently back in 1980, and did dm for a perfectly different reason than just to get money alone. Commercial success for Prince means more or at least different opportunities surely. That is relevant to you as a fan. I'm not saying it's important to you as far as how you rate the music, but it's relevant you as a Prince fan.
it still isn't. Ok, well I guess I don't really understand how that is and where you're coming from, but that's cool. Agree to disagree. I certainly admire your clear intent to maintain integrity.

Should be heavily promoted. ´The word´ is cool, but the preachy lyrics may turn off some listeners, specially non-fans.

"Johnny Cash," "Barry Manilow" in the Top 10 and Prince at #1! 10-20 years ago this would have been thought impossible. It's like a time warp.

So True, So True I don't understand for the life of me why so many people are hating (or at least sleeping) on Incense and Candles. That song is a bona fide HIT! Wake up people and "get on the boat now". I also agree with you about Love and the Word. This whole album is soooo tight man, I mean its running all through me. I can't listen to anything else. 3121 leaves Musicology in the dust. CONGRADULATIONS P!.....shoot I always knew you still had it in ya.

I just listened to Incense and Candles for the second time and I could bet that it would be a hit if well promoted. There is nothing ´weird´ that could turn off non-fans (that´s why probably many fans dont like it). ´Black Sweat´ is cool, but it didnt have a good melody. If ´Incense´ gets to be a hit, it could pave the way for ´Love´ (this one is more ´Prince´)
