Another fantastic interview from Alan Leeds. It really gives an insight into how Prince operates - and how much material is stored up!
Though I thought it was odd that Alan was talking about emails flipping back and forth back in '87 - although the internet was around then, it really didn't get user-friendly until much later...

I always envisioned Prince putting out a lengthy Cd of Bitches Brew-like jams. "Tell that little purple motherfucker to contact me!" - Miles to Alan Leeds . . .

The story of their relationship is very revealing of both of them and particularly Prince. The most interesting thing is that Prince is unwilling to direct people he admires, but paradoxically want them to fit within his own parameters. It's the case of an extreme control freak being even less able to relax due to his great respect for his famous collaborator.

Has anyone heard about the anecdote where Prince goes to visit Miles at his home and P is greeted at the door by a completely naked Davis?
And a side note - Does anybody know if there is any recorded material of Prince's dad's jazz career?

interesting read. but why is Leeds talking about emails form 1987?

I remember reading that Prince provided a poem that was read at MD's funeral. Any truth to this and does anyone have it?

Prince is a liar.
He never recorded with MIles Davis in the studio.

And a side note - Does anybody know if there is any recorded material of Prince's dad's jazz career? I've heard only the part that you recounted. If you know the rest of the story, I'd love to hear it. I've also heard that there are some boots circulating of Prince's father playing, although I haven't listened to them personally.

Prince told this story in an interview. The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. Though the internet was nowhere near the size it is today, there were still lot's of online services which provided electronic mail to their customers, the biggest being Compuserve and Prodigy. That's where AOL got it's start as well. -->> This Space 4 Rent <<--

This is the last thing that I will read, where Alan Leeds is concerned. Alan may have been the man, but now he just seems interested in "telling" on Prince, and I just don't want to hear it.

yep, we had e-mail back then
there was quite a group of us on prodigy i started on compuserve around 1985-86 we used to get charged by the minute props to wendy, lisa, alan, and eric for turning prince onto jazz!! mwahaha! y'all didn't miss that part, did ya?? [Edited 3/4/06 14:40pm]

Eric joined the band in the middle of the Purple Rain tour and quickly became friends with [guitarist] Wendy Melvoin and [keyboardist] Lisa Coleman, who were familiar with jazz. Gradually they began turning Prince into this kind of music- he had little first hand knowledge of jazz. This was during 1984/85. They made it their own project of turning Prince onto different kinds of music. Eric would give him jazz records and turned Prince on to Sketches of Spain and Kind of Blue and other stuff.
I'm sorry, but I refuse to believe that Prince didn't know anything about jazz before Wendy & Lisa. I'm not saying he knew everything, but he had to know something. His dad was a jazz musician, for shit sakes, he had to at least know something. "I'll be the first one to admit that I am many things, but one thing I am not is ungrateful...thank you..." - Prince

I'm sure there's a great deal of truth to their influence but Prince is a musical sponge and forever exploring musical history. The story also fails to give Prince any credit for discovering and learning on his own. If it's true, it makes the forays on the first Madhouse album where Prince basically plays and composes the whole thing, that much more amazing. He has a encylopedic knowledge of music. In addition to his father being a jazz musician, his mother was also a jazz vocalist. And don't forget P was also jamming with the likes of Sheila E. and Patrice Rushen who have a foundation in jazz.

I said it on the Alan Leeds thread...and I say it again...Alan is great.
I love the way he tells the stories. It sounds very honest and respectful, not gossip. I hope he releases a book someday
