Prince & Black Consciousness

Do ya'll think Prince is becoming mo' aware of his Black side?
I mean, what's up w/ Black Sweat & all?

Also, in TRChildren, he mentions the awareness of 'minorities' realising that they r actually the majority, possibly = TRChildren. (?!)

SST > poorest of our nations sons.

Such sentiments or comments make me wonder; what about u?

I think that Prince has always been aware of his ability to provoke thought and action related to the African-American cause. He's always made references to it in his music. People are just finally waking up and realizing that the musical genius is African-American and as another orger once said they have to "deal with it." wink rainbow

<<< I don't agree w/ u 100%. I have some black friends who said they would have liked 2 have slapped Prince back in the day 4 his representations (on non), or treatment of Black people his videos.

Perhaps he is having a natural awakening about his roots.

If he is or has been having an "awakening" I'm glad. I hope the brotha continues what he is doing. As far as back in the day, I think that there are alot of African-Americans who could also be slapped for shying away from their backgrounds. The video aspect of it in my opinion, is more of Prince conforming to what "supposedly the public wants to see."

I've noticed that he uses lines like these quite often in his previous songs, such as 'dancing like a white girl' in Dinner with Dolores, and a line about screaming like a white woman in How come u don't call me anymore on the ONA cd. What does he mean by these ad libs? I've often wondered.

Well actually I always kinda liked it that he acted how he wanted to act and not how society tells people how to act based on race, sex, heritage, ect.

2 respond, i think he is having some kind of an awakening...it's been coming along for a few years. as for the lines/lyrics u mentioned, i think that's how he tries 2 balance himself. like...yes, i'm black and proud, but don't worry ya'll, this is how i'm including white ppl.

this is not a theory, but just 1 of a listener's views about Prince's lyrics.

Amen. He is totally black-ing it up these days. Let's not get it twisted. As I posted some weeks ago.. back in the day, folks were like.. "where's all the Black people at, y'all?" ... I'm African American and the other kids would say, "I don't know why you're clocking him.. he ain't hardly into no Black girls"... and on and on...

So, nobody's saying he's hasn't embraced his love and respect for Black music and his place in it... the way you present yourself is a whole 'nother other...

For example, there is absolutely no way in hell Prince would have promoted a Tamar back in the day... Right now, it's cool to be Black in all aspects of American culture.. that wasn't truee 20 yrs ago when he stepped up...

I'm just saying.. y'all can hate on me if you want to...
Come here, babe.. yeah...

I don't hate U. I also agree totally. Now, my question is, working from what you established, do you think some Prince fans might feel excluded by this Blackness, or is Prince more real to them; or do ya'll think that most reacting 2 this would say "f*#@ the consciousness" and drop mo' songs like Jack U Off, Gett Off, Head, etc?

Well duh. He has a lot of ground to make up. From claiming white parents in interviews, a white mother in Purple Rain and as Spike Lee complained about the disturbing shunning of black women in his Pailsey world. This was when the world had their eyes on him too and he never represented his roots.

Since the NPG, Gold Nigga, "Slave", Exodus, When Will We B Paid, Avalanche, Family Name... was a long journey to where we could imagine a Prince girl/protege like Tamar.

In fact The Revolution complained about Wally and Brookes, hated having them around seeing them as token black buddies. Which perhaps they were. That seems like the start of Prince's public identity as an African-American.

Alright, I'm chilled, and really...this wasn't meant 2 b a racial vibe. I was genuinely, really wondering. Judging from the comments received, I can see that others have also had similiar thoughts and considered the matter.

I admit also, that it must be difficult having 2 consider all the vibes out in the world and having 2 satisfy so many different tastes...musically for Prince that is.

Since I've also listened 2 him since before '84, I've always wondered what made him tick. In one of his videos, Rasberry Beret, there's a graffiti piece spray painted that says "Africa divided." At that time, who would have thought Prince gave a rat's ass about Africa.

Peace ya'll.
