Alright, I'm chilled, and really...this wasn't meant 2 b a racial vibe. I was genuinely, really wondering. Judging from the comments received, I can see that others have also had similiar thoughts and considered the matter.

I admit also, that it must be difficult having 2 consider all the vibes out in the world and having 2 satisfy so many different tastes...musically for Prince that is.

Since I've also listened 2 him since before '84, I've always wondered what made him tick. In one of his videos, Rasberry Beret, there's a graffiti piece spray painted that says "Africa divided." At that time, who would have thought Prince gave a rat's ass about Africa.

Peace ya'll.

Essentially Prince was very conservative. An 80s Reaganite, Republican representing the greedy get rich quick selfishness of the day. Not convinced he'd care about or feel much kinship with Africa, prefering to protest in Hello after shunning USA For Africa that "There's just as much hunger here at HOME".

Amen. He is totally black-ing it up these days. Let's not get it twisted. As I posted some weeks ago.. back in the day, folks were like.. "where's all the Black people at, y'all?" ... I'm African American and the other kids would say, "I don't know why you're clocking him.. he ain't hardly into no Black girls"... and on and on...

So, nobody's saying he's hasn't embraced his love and respect for Black music and his place in it... the way you present yourself is a whole 'nother other...

For example, there is absolutely no way in hell Prince would have promoted a Tamar back in the day... Right now, it's cool to be Black in all aspects of American culture.. that wasn't truee 20 yrs ago when he stepped up...

I'm just saying.. y'all can hate on me if you want to...

<<< I don't agree w/ u 100%. I have some black friends who said they would have liked 2 have slapped Prince back in the day 4 his representations (on non), or treatment of Black people his videos.

Perhaps he is having a natural awakening about his roots.

No hate coming from this way. hug

Whether folks want to believe it or not, Prince has always played the race game. Those were conscious decisions that he made to have his band and side projects look a certain way. Now that he is swaying to the other side, he is catching flack for it. During the Musicology tour someone posted in the concert forum that they did not understand why Prince, who is a black man, only selected black women to come up on the stage eek ...Prince, a black man that you would be hardpressed to find any NON bi-racial Black women in his circle, for the first 10 years of his career. And the bull about there not being many black people in Minnesota ain't flying with me. lol

Wow, good thread. Everybody seems to have this subject in perspective. I would add this. P enjoys being contrary and doing the opposite of what people expect. Hes matured since the 80s. Also the Warner Brothers wars really gave him a moment of clarity.

I will agree 100% with this and I'd like to add that Prince seems to have grown a bit since his kid passed away. I believe he may have re-evaluated who he is to some degree and what he really stands for. When he decided that he was not going to "curse" anymore, I took that as the first sign that he was looking at who he really is. Just my 2 cents.

Well duh. He has a lot of ground to make up. From claiming white parents in interviews, a white mother in Purple Rain and as Spike Lee complained about the disturbing shunning of black women in his Pailsey world. This was when the world had their eyes on him too and he never represented his roots.

Since the NPG, Gold Nigga, "Slave", Exodus, When Will We B Paid, Avalanche, Family Name... was a long journey to where we could imagine a Prince girl/protege like Tamar.

In fact The Revolution complained about Wally and Brookes, hated having them around seeing them as token black buddies. Which perhaps they were. That seems like the start of Prince's public identity as an African-American.

Prince has 2 sides and they are both friends. Black! parents that is.

come on people, get real ...
the mixed band thing was as much about honoring/aping Sly and the Family Stone as much as it was a marketing mechanism to get him a broader audience. And, I might add, at the time both worked extremely well. It had nothing to do with what he really believed.
Also, as a walking legend with nothing to lose, he can indulge whatever altruistic whims he so desires, instead of the pressure of generating sales and being a company man as he was back then. Plus he was younger and dummer, less world experience.
On another note, by your reasoning, you guys would conclude that he had a thing for older large black women since he liked working with Chaka, Mavis, Rosie, Boni, and Patty ...

Really??? Prince was "very conservative"...an 80's Reaganite Republican representing the greedy get rich quick selfishness of the day"....

Do you know what..what are you ALL looking for from Prince?? A completely flawless human being.

Do YOU actually know Prince's background? You know EVERYTHING about his upbringing? You know exactly what makes him tick???

Because he's black therefore he should have this black consciousness. And what EXACTLY is that ?? If he's not with black women then it must mean he's shunning them. If he sings a song about poverty in America then he OBVIOUSOLY doesn't care about Africa.

WHO are you to say who and what Prince cares about? I should imagine that only he knows that.

Yes of course he ONLY had a "mixed band thing" for a marketing mechanism. Obviously Prince really thought about it in that way. Probably only worked with his band as a publicity stunt ot get noticed. That's how you sell records isn't it?? Nothing to do with writing good music that ALL colours, creeds and religions could relate to. Nothing to do with writing songs about being yourself and embracing who you are. No heaven forbid Prince did anything other than try and make money and be famous because afterall I'm sure that's all he ever wanted. He would do that the only way possible. If it meant making music for dumb white folks then he would do it. He would play the game in order to further his career. Now thank god he doens't care about any of that shit and he can be truly balck and sing lyrics about "screaming like a white women" because that's not stereotyping at all. Oh no, that's a fact !!
Shut up already, damn.
