In fact, the reason I believe he does, is that he seems to want a challenge. I think he avoided his own sound for all these years to try to reinvent himself and make things harder. Now that it appears he's too old to pull it off, it's tough and he's "willing to do the work". I'm enjoying the ride as much as ever. Fury and Black Sweat are awesome and I think he deserves the success he's had recently on MTV's top 10 and iTunes. I'll never count the man out, not again anyway..
This is not a Prince issue, Marcel. This is a clear channel..and other radio conglomerate issue. Paul McCartney can't get a song on the charts. Nor the Rolling Stones..nor many other talented MUSICIANS. Nor can Prince. If it isn't Ashley Simpson (puke) or Eminem, it's not going to play on the radio. It's a sad sad fact. Playlists are so damned tight now that talented people who actually sing, or play musical instruments can't be heard. Every other song sounds like the one before it. If it isnt some garage band, its avril lavigne, or Weezer...or Green day..over...and over...and over again. The old days of FM radio are gone, where dj's got to actually choose their own songs, and they could go deep into an album. Its just the sad state of affairs, and they want to know why XM and Sirius satellite radio is becoming more popular. They want to know why Ipods are so popular...because people can choose their own songs, and not have to listen to the same pussycat doll song fifteen times in 6 hours. Enjoy the new Prince cd for yourself. You don't need it to be a hit..just enjoy it yourself Well said. All of it true.. Let Universal do their thing . I want P to have a hit as much as the next guy but personally I think they are promtoing the hell out of it . SNL , worldwide listening parties, Purple Ticket contests

Well, when I go back and look at Prince's output over the past 15 years or so I just can't find any songs that were produced for the charts. They were either over produced or lacked the energy of his 80's and early 90's output. What I'm hearing in BS and Fury is a power in his voice and a conviction that hasn't been there since the mid-80's when I saw him light the world on fire, specifically concerts in Europe of Parade and Sign O The Times, when I lived in Germany. Just listen to his "Dearly Beloved" from Let's Go Crazy last week at the Brits. There's something there in his voice, he's determined to make a splash now and it is showing to me.
I can't say the charts are any different now than in the 80's. They played the same tired Wham and Culture Club over and over and over back then. Once in a while a James Brown or even the Beatles could top the charts, but today we have Santana and even Madonna doing it. It can be done, but the songs after to have POWER. America loves to ROCK! It doesn't have to be "rock music" per se, but give us something to jump around or jam to, not mid-tempo numbers like "Come On" or "Musicology". Anyway, I think he's delivered, so far, with songs from 3121. Black Sweat will chart soon thanks to sales and Fury could follow up huge, if the studio version's anywhere close to the SNL live version.

Hot 100 Single Sales :
#3 - ??? #25 - ??? R&B / Hip Hop Top 100 #67 - Te Amo Corazon R&B / Hip Hop Single Sales #4 - ???? #49 - ???? wow - thanks for the info, i can only presume the ???s are SST and TAC. I'd presume at #4 is TAC, as its the newest release. someone posted info from billboard recently of the chart positions of all princes singles, or alot of them anyway. and SST was still at that time in the single sales charts. its a shame really as prince still sells a fair amount of singles compared to other artists, yet how many sales did he lose because he released SST on his site for ages before a single came out (ok the single was universals idea after the release but still) and TAC is a one track single so noone is fussed - i do wonder how they would be doing otherwise. you'd think having the 3rd best selling single on the charts would make it chart at least in the top200, if not the top100. american charts are too confusing it seems! anyone clear this up?

It is very dissapointing that radio isnt playing BS much. What a shame.
What makes people think that radio will play Fury? I agree it's the shit, I love it, but why will radio play that one? When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

You know, it's been so long since Prince charted pop/rock that I can't tell you for sure it will chart. For some reason, it's not a genre that's driven by youth as much as Urban is. Bands like Aerosmith and other older acts can put songs on the Hot 100 when it's tougher for older R&B acts. It's always been that way, for some reason. A DJ once told me, R&B always has to be the latest sound, but Rock&Roll never dies.

I agree with Purple Knight that Prince doesn't show any signs of having a big hit in the near future. But if he continues working, I think chances are he will have one. Your reasoning is very sound, but I think your prediction is wrong (and not because I just love Prince & want him to have a hit.
Classic artists tend to reach a point where everyone suddenly realizes that they are great. James Brown's Living in America was a great example. Clapton's Tears in Heaven is another example. Santana (though that was a collaboration). Bonnie Raitt. Tom Jones (!?). Johnny Cash. Elvis (A Little Less Conversation). Roy Orbison. John Lennon. Elvis Costello (Veronica) The great ones tend to return at some point. Also spin control could say that Call My Name was a Grammy winning hit song, so it's hard to know what a hit even is anymore. A US hit is anything that reaches the Billboard Top 40 chart. Call My Name was like #77 or something. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

i just don't get radio stations wouldn't they want to play songs from an album that is popular no matter how old the artist is? if 150,000 people buy a rolling stones or even a barry manilow album doesnt that tell them that these artists are still vital? black sweat is #1 on the album chart and climbing the top 100 chart on Itunes dont they see things like this? nowonder people have stopped listening to radio Check it out ...Shiny Toy Guns R gonna blowup VERY soon and bring melody back to music..you heard it here 1st! http://www.myspacecomment...theone.mp3

I hope he doesn't want massive airplay that badly cause I sure don't want a Prince w/Nas remix.

Now I'm a Madonna fan and I dig that she still gets airplay but if that bitch can get her songs over the airwaves why the fuck can't Prince? They are the same age, they both have songs on MTV and VH1 but yet why is it such a fucken burden to hear this new song from him and not her? And it's barely getting played on BET??...

Black Sweat is moving up a bit on the Hit charts, but stalled at Urban. Call those local stations and request the song and maybe it can crack the top 100 next week, combine that with some strong sales and iTunes numbers and it could go top 40 yet.
