Black Sweat is #23 on the R&B Top 100 Songs at this point.

But the sales of the "EP" will be counted for single sales for both songs on Billboard, right?

I would assume so , otherwise Prince might have the #1 Album on Billboard next week. Im almost certain a 2 song EP for $1.98 would count towards the Singles chart. It has to count a something

Doesn't iTunes count downloaded songs from albums towards its top 100 chart?

Sorry to bombard. I just want "Black Sweat" to do well and I remember "Te Amo Corazon" cracked the top 100.

Yes.

the question is will BL&B also make a Hot 100 debut next week . Based on these heavy sales from the 2 song EP?

Any chart experts know exactly how this works please chime in.

Bottom line is itunes sales DO count towards the Hot 100

Does "also" mean you believe "Black Sweat" will debut on the Hot 100? I know you're quite an expert on the chart, so hearing that makes me hopeful!

Far from an expert on how the whole digital thing works.

But yes Black Sweat should make a healthy debut NEXT week (not this thursday) . Take Pinks new single Stupid Girls..it had strong airplay and was about #6 on itunes sales and made a Hot 100 Debut at #26 last week. BS airplay isnt as strong but it looks like its sales will top Pinks. If I were a betting man Id guess a debut in the 50's or 60's but wayyyy to early to tell

That's exciting! I wonder how well "Musicology" would have done had downloads been counted.

It looks strange to me. How can it be the #4 album, but not be pushing it onto the singles chart on iTunes? I would suspect it's one or the other and won't have as much impact on Billboard, but we shall see. I say this because it will quickly fall off the "album" chart as most people purchase single songs, anyway that's my logic and it only climbed the "album chart" due to the promo on the main store page. It should still help kickstart the track and get it more attention. By the way, it's now the #3 "album" on iTunes (too funny really).

Maybe this is one reason we don't see as many b-sides, as then you have an album and not a single, according to iTunes.

The album is charting high because of the Purple ticket thingy. No one is buying the song because i don't think it counts to be entered into the contest.

I doubt this will have any effect on Billboard, unless he's getting a lot of airplay.

I'm suggesting this for quote of the day, week, month, year. Keep it on the front page until Prince has a hot single.

In return, you, PurpleKnight, shall have this as your permanent indelible signature if he does have a hit, condemned to post in shame for the rest of your Org life.

I am? That's news to me. I'm sorry, I forgot I'm not allowed to say anything that isn't in the vein of "GO PRINCE U ROCKZORS!"

Saying he won't ever have another big hit doesn't mean he won't write great music.

Did my comment strike a nerve? Does the thought of Prince not appeasing the anonymous masses bother you somehow?

I think all the "album" sales on iTunes will still help it on Billboard's Hot 100. Billboard defines an EP as an album containing a certain number of minutes of music, a certain number of original songs, or selling for a certain price. At $1.98, and containing only two songs, "Black Sweat" will not chart on Billboard as an album. I'll give you an example of how this works: When the Smashing Pumpkins released the song "Zero" as a single in 1996, many were surprised when it showed up on the album chart as an EP, instead of entering the Hot 100. Billboard stated that, while its list price was only $3.49 (the going rate for singles in those days), the inclusion of nearly half a dozen original B-sides (not remixes but original non-album tracks) gave it a run time that disqualified it as a single. With seven or so original tracks it was considered an EP. "Black Sweat" is below the EP list price qualifications, has a run time of only 9 minutes, and contains only two individual tracks. iTunes can designate it however they want, but all sales should apply on Billboard's Hot 100 to "Black Sweat."

When there are two songs being promoted from a single, Billboard awards all sales points to whichever track is receiving the most airplay. So all the "album" sales on iTunes, and the individual track sales, should be awarded to "Black Sweat" (which is receiving more spins at radio than "B,L&B").

A little confusing, I know, but hopefully that cleared a few things up!

Reality---this song sucks really bad and will not be a hit record. The song is horrible! The tune is so bad it's beyond marketing. Curiosity is the only buying factor at the moment. it's one of the worst tunes I've ever her by Prince outside of Cinnamon Girl.

There is a small mention in the New York Times magazine about the single, Black Sweat, at this link:

It's in their Approval Matrix in the block considered as Brilliant-Lowbrow:

Here's the reality - Black Sweat is getting played frequently on MTV, VH1 and BET and I dare say it's gotten more spins on those stations than Musicology did. And the song is still getting added to radio stations across the country and the world. In my eyes, it's a hit. PERIOD.

Yes, it's so bad it could never compete with those great songs at the top of the charts. Grillz and Laffy Taffy are the measuring stick of quality.
