I have been giving alot of thought to this dude lately.

Prince's guitar techy. That poor bastard. Can you imagine the stress? Prince throws you his guitar. I wonder if any have ever been dropped. I wonder if that comes out of someones pay. I wonder if prince throws his prized guitars or just copies.

Many a guitar has taken a dive - Watch Lovesexy - After Lets Go Crazy Prince slings his Guitar offstage and you hear it crunch as it bites the dust - The Next Guitar he uses is the Peach Cloud - I once read that this was because the Blue cloud was in Intensive Care !!!

At the emd of Syracuse 1985 the White cloud bites the dust too.....Also during Rave on DVD if you watch I think it is the Bass that gets slung across the stage to the rear of the drummer stand (Might be confused with another concert though)

Hey.. for those of us who are not afficionados...

Can you talk a little bit about the Hohner (it's the one with the animal print, right?). What sets it apart from others? Is it "rare?" When did Prince start using his?

It sure is a hot little number.
Come here, babe.. yeah...

Although it is more or less the same Guitar - The "Prinz" was actually a newer version of the Tele Prince owns and Hohner cheekily named it the "Prinz" because Prince owned it. Prinz meaning Prince in German.

The Original Prinz Guitar was available for as little as £200 back in the 80's but Princes Fame and use of the Guitar has pushed the Value sky high and collectors have been known to pay as much as £1 to £3 thousand pounds for an Immaculate Prinz Tele.

This is a good place to start for Info.

Does anyone remember the story Prince told at one of the ONA soundchecks about buying it at a gas station for 30 bucks or something like that?

Not heard that one but, I was under the impression that the one he played in the early days was a cheap copy confused I dont know at which stage he got around to buying a "real" one...

Prince undoubtedly has many replicas of the Hohner made up. It's pretty common in the rock world. Just ask BB King how many Lucille's he's got. It was upwards of 30, I believe. And, since Prince is known for mistreating his instruments (I've seen him slam down the symbol guitars a couple of times), I'm sure his guitar tech is constantly busy re-building those things.

If you look closely there is another guitar (same style/color) on the stage right by Lisa.

If you look at the Prince and the Revolution LIVE during computer blue performance he whips his guiter so high and far back stage but you see an arm appear and catch it by the neck. I remember seeing his guitar room at Paisley Park and there was so so so so so so so so so so many guitars. 98% I have never seen before and there was posters of women in there (ones I have never seen before) and the tour guide said something like "Prince loves instruments like he loves beautiful women" or something like that.

Used extensively on the "Nude Tour", this guitar and and it's Bass counterpart were designed and built by Auerswald guitars in Germany. The guitar featured a one piece Wengewood construction a String locking Bridge and the distinctive tie bar designed to aid sustain, which the Artist demonstrated by playing entire songs using only his left hand! Another feature of the guitar is the greenish Purple finish which incorporates 20 coats of aircraft paint.

The design of the guitar resembles the Roland GR 707 guitar synth once used by Wendy Melvion, though the story goes that the original was a gift from Princess Gloria of Thurn und Taxis in Germany, a replica of which was made by Jerry Auerswald as the original was too precious to use. A production version of the Anastasia will cost you a mere £2.500

Read about it there.

The cheaper construction of the Hohner gave rise to problems in the studio - according to Kyle Bess, one time staff engineer at The Recording Plant in L.A., Prince often insisted on the guitar, favouring it's tone which he once described as "Raggedy".
