I'm trying really hard not to get too excited based on some of the user reviews. I don't wanna be disappointed by a good album just because I was expecting it to be great after reading a bunch of rave reviews.

Yeah I agree, it's not gonna be a radical departure from Musicology, but it is
better. Plus it does have the welcome return of some Camille-style electro funk.

In through the gates, knock on the door
Leave your clothes in a pile on the floor
Take ur pick from the Japanese robes and sandals
Drink champagne from a glass with chocolate handles

Don't u wanna come? 3121
Gonna b so much fun 3121
That's where the party b 3121
U can come if u want 2, but u can never leave!

lol cool cool!

You know I've been listening to Te Amo Corazon and the song is really growing on me. I really starting to dig this song. I was square in the middle with it but I'm really digging the mellow groove. And since it seems like Black Sweat comes after Te Amo... man it's gonna knock us on our asses!

We are less than a month from getting 3121 and I can't wait!

From the reviews, I'm getting the impression that this album is the soulful, positive and mature version of The Black Album, where Te Amo Corason seems to take the role of When 2 Are In Love. It seems that the first two songs have a similar atmosphere as do Le Grind and Cindy C....

Can anyone say if I'm right? I really hope I am...

So far, it seems to me like it might be a more inspired Musicology than anything.

Taken from papaj's review of 3121:

"This is one of the best albums from Prince, take my word for it!!! It is raw, funk oriented, with unbelievable drums, bass, synths, guitars, vocals, melodies… It is nothing like “Musicology”. I thought “Musicology” was decent albeit too calm; this one will blow your mind with its originality and power."

Taken from NewFunk's review of 3121:

"There have been a lot of references to Musicology too. I didn't care much for Musicology and felt I was losing faith in P's ability to put out another killer album. He's provided the soundtrack to my life and the thought of him slipping away was sadly becoming inevitable...until I heard 3121. Believe the hype guys, this is the shit."

Guess we'll see...

Peace, David

Hi Guys!, hope this still works, haven't posted here in a couple of years.Anyway, just heard "black sweat" and "Te Amo Corazon" and i gotta say it's got me bit worried. What's happened to Prince? he seems to be lacking emotion in his vocals, kinda sounds like he's faking it or something, anyone know what i'm talking about?, since about 1997 his music has sounded kinda mundane
We're here, might as well get into it.

Well, I see what you're saying to a certain extent. I think Prince is definitely at his best when he's tackling something new that no one else has the talent to even consider attempting.

His ballads definitely sound like he's a little bored in the studio, but I think he sounds like he's having fun on Black Sweat.

Fury is really tough to say, since we haven't heard the studio version yet.

Lacking emotion? Are you kidding?

Listen again to TAC -especially the middle part in the middle where he has a ton of emotion in his voice and he improvises over the music - beautiful!

And Black Sweat has ton of emotion and play in his vocals

You need to watch/lisen to the Brit performance and tell me he is faking anything but pure emotion that only Prince can evoke

Prince putting BL&B on his album is as much a marketing choice as an artistic one. (Since I like the song that's okay with me.) Prince is counting on a lot of folks buying "3121," hearing the duet and being intrigued enough to investigate Tamar's album and hopefully purchase it.

"Black Sweat" to me just sounds like an attempt to stay in the mainstream by rehashing a Timberlake/Pharell type song, which isn't all bad, I quite like a couple of their songs. I just wish Prince would do his own thing, he's way too talented to be trying to copy ex-boyband "musicians". -s'pose he could just be out of ideas though, who knows...

The following statement has been posted throughout this discussion. Apparently it needs to be said again:

On "Black Sweat" Prince does not rip off Pharrell or The Neptunes or Justin Timberlake or Usher or Lil Jon or blah blah blah. These artists have -- at least in part -- built their careers by sounding like Prince. "Black Sweat" is simply Prince reclaiming his own sound from them.

Peace, David

Preach it David!!! Apparently a lot of people here let alone the rest of the world have forgotten who started the "Prince" sound.

So fucking true. Prince isn't doing Pharrell; he's doing Prince!

That's his fucking sound. He's the Godfather of that sound.

Maybe of interest to UK orgers. Last night's Culture Show on bbc2 had a small feature on Prince and 3121 on the arts round-up. It was highly complimentary and showed a clip of the Black Sweat video ('rude', 'very funky') and mentioned his 'electrifying' Brits performance. It looks like Prince is re-entering the public consciousness here in the UK for all the right reasons; for once there was no mention of unpronounceable squiggles, alleged diva antics or record company disputes,

I have been playing TAC, BS, BL&B (from iTunes) and Fury (audio from SNL) back-to-back non-stop. IMO, these four tracks alone form the basis for a strong and eclectic Prince album. So when I read the "3121" reviews and see how much love some of the other cuts are getting, it makes me woot!.

I know y'all understand.

I have to say that the way that this album is being marketed is brilliant, particularly by Prince's standards. We've been privy to four of the album's songs before its release, and all four appeal to different demographics. The live performances have even non-fans raving. The Purple Ticket promotion abets sales the same way the Musicology Tour did- by relying on Prince's reputation as a great live performer. If Prince wants a hit, he's taken some great, creative steps to assure that 3121 and its singles get attention.

Although I prefer my albums a bit more cohesive, I can deal with a Prince grab-bag every now and then. thumbs up!
