Prince and Bob Dylan

Watching the PBS documentary a couple weeks back got me interested in Bob Dylan and I bought "Highway 61 Revisited" and "Blonde on Blonde."

Both men are:

From Minnesota
Cryptic
Embrace "radical" spirituality
Diminutive
Way out there
Makers of really bad self-indulgent films
Singer-songrwriters
Typically press-shy
Do their own thing

What else?

Let's celebrate at least one thing they don't have in common :

Surprisingly, Dylan not Prince appeared in a lingerie commercial.

And for those living in Canada, Dylan not Prince let a bank use a seminally countercultural song to promote financial services.

I always loved how they are both GREAT GREAT... GREAT artists (2 of my top 4, and always tied) for the exact opposite reasons.

Compared to Prince, Dylan is a giant, height-wise. lol

Both were also amongst the first musicians to release CD-ROMs (with the same company, incidentally).

FYI: Rumour had it that Dylan and Prince were scheduled to do a number together at The Concert for The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ('95), but - as we all know - Prince bowed out of the show.

I heard about that. Prince was humble to no one back then.
Don't hurt me, I'm a newb. I'm supposed to be stupid.

Whew! Had me worried for a minute. After seeing the Prince and Salma Hayeck thread, Prince and Bob Dylan was a little much for me to handle. Not that there's anything wrong with that. lol

Dylan also praised Prince and referred to him as a "boy wonder" in a magazine interview (Spin?) in the '80s.

1. Wild hair
2. Dylan has that cute sculpted moustache like P's been doing for years
3. Married models/model-types
4. Play both guitar & piano
5. Shocking stylistic changes which alienated many fans
6. Have played with Tom Petty/Jeff Lynne

Mavis Staples....Both have worked lots with Mavis Staples.

Bob and Mavis recorded "Gonna Change My Way of Thinking" a couple of years ago as a duet, and Mavis often covers Bob songs. They've been friends for over 40 years and were rumoured to have been a couple at one point.

Also, the song Dirty World on the Travelling Wilburys album was Bobs joking attempt to sing like Prince... "love your sexy body" etc etc.

There is a definite possibility that Mavis and Bob had a thing goin on in the good old days. Mavis speaks very highly of Bob. I'm pretty sure they were lovers at some point.

Yeah I read that he was really into her and she into him, like marriage minded. I saw that in an article either earlier this year or last year, can't remember off hand.

When Dylan fans didn't accept his becoming electric
Bob couldn't care less.

When Prince fans didn't accept his becoming a witness
Bob couldn't care less.

So big deal - Dylan let his music be used in commercials - so has Prince.
I guess that makes them both sell-outs.

Dylan was the most influential of his generation (Beatles, Stones, Hendrix, Joplin, etc.) Prince was/is the most influential of his (Madonna, Janet, Outkast, Alicia, etc.)!
