Sheila E Dance On???

Hi All,

I've recently been listening to Love Sexy, especially Dance On and noticed the phenominal drumming on Dance On! lol
So here's my question: Is a drum machine / computer used on Dance On or is actually drummed by Sheila E? There's no mention in the cover etc!

If it is drummed by a human, A) It's very impressive and B) is there a video on-line of Dance On so I can see this happening? eek

Thanks to anyone who can help with this!

Phil

Don't know if there's a video online, and as far as the Lovesexy concert, this was used in its instrumental form during one of the breaks toward the end of the tour.

Yes it is one of the last great drum patterns that Prince created. It's one of the reasons Dance On is one my all-time favorite (and perhaps one of the most underrated) Prince songs.

And BTW, just one more example of Prince being first at something. Just as Prince was one of the first musicians to try rap out (Irresistable Bitch was a rap song, with a sung hook), Prince is one of the first, if not the first, musician to use that kind of syncopation in a song, and foreshadows the kind of Electronica drum beats that you hear today. It's awesome and funky like they know they be!!!!!

Yes, Sheila played drums on this track.

Yes, it was played live (as an instrumental) on the Lovesexy 88 tour.

Bonnie is the female vocalist, although I wouldn't be surprised if Sheila and Cat were on backing vox as well.

There was never a video to the song. It was featured on the Lovesexy concert broadcast from Dortmund, in the aforementioned instumental arrangement.
