Which was recorded first Posessed or Posessed (Instrumental)

There's a vocal version of the instrumental, it's just not circulating.

The vocal version that IS circulating, is the earlier one.

The instrumental is the latter, and can also be heard in Purple Rain (in the scene with Apollonia and Morris at the table in the club).

Possessed was originally recorded on Tuesday, May 24, 1983. I think it was done in Minneapolis and this was NOT the version that was used in the movie. It was rerecorded on Saturday, March 17, 1984 at Sunset Sound. That session started at 1PM and went until 5:45 AM the next morning. The vast majority of the song was recorded during that period. Some additional editing and crossfading was done a few days later, but the track stayed basically the same and a cassette was made on April 25th that was the film version. That probably means that the vocal version was done first (May ’83), and the instrumental version was done second, but I am guessing that there were vocals on both versions, they were just stripped out for the film. Confusing? Yes a little bit.
