I'm just glad I was around during this period. To actually go into the record store and buy the album. I remember feeling uneasy about the cover. By this time, I was already into cats like Bowie, KISS, Parliament and Iggy Pop. But P had a different vibe going on about him than the cats I mentioned. I vividly remember taking the album to the counter to pay for it and the cashier looking at it, shaking his head. Sure, he was some white rocker dude. He may have been one of the cats to throw shit at P when he opened for the Rolling Stones. So, on one hand I was like "What? It's cool for Iggy to do it, but not a brother?" If u weren't there doing this time, wow, u really missed out. This was a raw, fame starved, bold ass brother who TRULY didn't give a fuck and was going to push it to the limit. To see P in person around this time was something else entirely from the "latter" Prince.

Sorry, but Sign O The Times is Prince's best album, there is really no debate about this. Most critics and fans agree. Dirty Mind was a great start, but SOTT is the standard of eclectic pop,rock,soul...

Good job, Deja! We all know how much you can't stand that album! I didn't find my way to that album until later in my Prince years, but I'm glad I did. Probably the greatest of his early albums. Nice analysis of the album and its impact!

wow....those were the days! for real. i was about 15 too and that album blew my mind for much the same reasons as u mentioned on your web page.
with that album i finally saw for the first time EVER in my life (when was lisa bonet on the cosby show?) somebody that looked like me! how i thought, how i felt....it was all there and more. a freak....a BLACK freak, a freaky freak!!!

prince changed, or rather help me change my life by showing me at such a young age that i wasn't alone (hence crazy)and that there were others out there who saw the world in a similar way as i did.

i totally got the message and YES....i DID love the underwear too. the trench coat, the high heeled boots, the leg warmers, the hair, the rude boy button, that telecaster and all of the grunge and grime. that album and that period of his career rocks! thanks for sharing.

p.s. when i got the album i pinned it up on my wall along with all my other prince albums and switch albums. my mom made me take it down because u can see his pubic hairs coming out of his bikinis. i thought to myself...big deal...so what....it''s just a few pubic hairs. what's the big deal? but of course, being a kid...i couldn't get MY way.

Just listening 2 Dirty Mind a few times again lately (well actually 32 but whos counting), makes u realise how far ahead of its time it was, how dareing and yet how cheeky he was(He had like one major hit). The ultimate way to fuck your label off, just when they thought we have got this Prince guy turning out suitable Pop records, he gives us our very own Dirty Mind
He says to warners, OK Prince and For you were to get fans and sales 4 warners (with Prince at least) , but with this I am doing my own thing. No company owns Prince, you either with me or not
Yet theres a method to its madness, 2 me Dirty Mind has always been the most baffling Prince Record, more so than sign, where he was at his peak, but DM was when he came into his own, his first masterpiece. In amongst all the graphic sex and pounding drumbeats are some complex lyrics, 2 fine ballads and a fine protest song all in a driving beat. Its enough to make an albums worth of smut or one of moralistic bragging but mixing the two together. Hey this guys telling you about screwing his sister in one song, and then decides that we should protest about wars and bombs, otherwise stay home and Do it all night!!!!

The album dosent have one weak jam. OK theres not much to sister musically, but its got great and funny lyrics and then the voice. But hey of the 5 overtly sexual songs, its the lyrics. Those jams got people talking.

Not just that it still sounds groovvy and thats why I consider it one of his best. Never could he so focussed again. I wonder how other people view this frustrating but brilliant record. 2 give u an idea of how much I have rambled, I put it on while I wrote this, I started on Dirty Mind, now its up to 'I came on wedding gown' (in 'Head' 4 those of u who don't no)
