R u going 2 do the same 4 Controversy released 14th October 1981, or next year is the album not worthy of this honour as it does carry on where Dirty Mind left off in a lot of places.

probably not...i favor dm a bit more than controversy. hopefully someone else will do a project on the album, cuz it's deserving of one as well.

ooo oooo ooo!! could ya do one for lovesexy?!?! o could ya?!?!!?!?!??!!?

And speaking of packages, one of the main things that bug me when it comes to this album/era is the fact that a lotta fans--the majority of 'em being female, as is expected/supposed (although i imagine there's a few fellas out there who dig the trenchcoat-and-underwear look as well)--seem to not take the album very seriously and instead holler, shout, drool & coo over how he looked back then: omglolbblwtf, he's in his underwear and he looks sooooo friggin' HAWT icanseehisp3wbzomgomgomgomgi'mgonnagojilloffnowheheheheheheeee!!!111one!!

Wow, I am giving it a spin now. I forgot how much this album totally rocks.

To this day is still kicks ass!! Also despite how good the lyrics are ( and I think they are some of his best) if you don't even have the lyrics just listen to the music itself, Melodies, guitar licks, excitement. Its all there.

Thanks Dansa for helping me and the others on this board for remembering this album as the gem it is (in case any of us forgot).

Nice writing and graphics. This was P's first album where he had a concept of who he was as an artist. Visually and musically. The blueprint was definately laid by this album for the rest of his "crucial" albums; Controversy,1999, and Purple Rain.

Nicely done. I pretty much got the same vibe you did from that album. I got into it much later than you did (age-wise). I didn't really give it a full listen until sometime in '99, when I was 24. That audio interview he did in Amsterdam at the time was kinda interesting too. Insightful, but misleading 'cause 'ol boy was still messing with the media's heads.
He made quite a few comments about being true to yourself and the importance of individuality in all aspects of life. I loved how the interviewer had this view that the song "Uptown" was all about living the good life and having things, and P broke it down that it wasn't about that at all. It was all a state of mind ("being there").
I agree with you (especially as a fellow artist) that it's all about individuality. Whether it's about cliques, trends, politics or war, be yourself. Of course, P did put it across in his own uber-unique way, which only brought the point home all the more so. wink

Yes, yes, we get it--you can't help it, he's teh sexx, but this is NOT about the underwear.

woot!

evillol

It smashed the entire concept of what my feeble-minded family were telling me up to that point. "Y'know...he's Black, too. He did this, so why can't I? Why shouldn't I?" I realized that I needed to just stop acting and dressing like my peers and start acting and dressing like ME. From the age of 15 on, I've always done things my way and have never looked back or felt ashamed. Along with my deep love for classic R & B and soul, I also have grown to love punk and new wave a lot more. I can wear my Gripfast boots and my safety-pinned/studded/patch & button-covered hoodie and be happy, and not give a shit at the passer-by who gives me dirty looks. All of this, and it's a big thanks in part to Dirty Mind.

What to say about this incredible little album? It may be the only album in Prince's entire catalogue that I have never grown tired of. This raw, incestuous, emotional, idealistic, unsure yet cocky, defiant muthafucka of a disc gives new shades of meaning to the phrase "classic Prince."

And let's not get me started on that picture from the inside sleeve. The one on the bed with the song titles written in spray paint on the wall.... drool

clapping Great write up D! That was some straight up good commentary. You should go ahead and get your own column in the Trib deal (or what eva comparable paper MN has) U could call it "Daily Dirty Mind" by Deja
reading People would probably suck it up ya know since it would deviate from the norm.

Also I did want mention one thing that cracked me up. The statement "as simple as roux". Roux! Girl us folks from Texas call that GRAVY!! falloff
But I guess if one wants to impress folks with their culinary lingo, then Roux it is. thumbs up!

Good job again! smile
?Cause me and u could have been a work of art

BE BLESSED!!
