S.S.T. Easily his best in last ten years

I don't think any Prince fan will dislike the song. Its kinda like a PRince fan going "I never really liked Kiss."

Its an all around likeable work. Anyone else heard it?

It's a great song but don't think it beats other songs in
the same category (Pearls B4 The Swine / Reflection). The
type of song has been done before, not better, but in the
same vein.

Prince has simply found a new loose format of layed back
songwriting in which he obviously excells and seems to be
able to say a lot of things without having the words n the
generic hip hop wannabe beats competing for space.

Simply some thought provoking and abstracted lyrics set
to gorgeous melodies and finely strewn musical flourished
backed up with great musicianship.

More, please!

Let's hope more of this breezy music makes it onto his new
album. Together with some deeppurpleconcorde jams, fcuz!

cool

the first half reminds me of a more energized version of a 'one nite alone' track, with the stream of consciousness (seemingly, at least), kinda breezy lyrics and the kinda derivative (but in a good way) classic soul/gospel style melody...the second half is, in my opinion anyway, a 100% madhouse vibe.

i like the idea of prince marrying his different styles like this - i'd love to hear the whole track uninterrupted to really hear how it shapeshifts from a mellow mid-tempo ballad to an uptempo jazz/funk instrumental.

but of course, it's prince, so he's gotta leave us wanting for SOMEthing. smile

Why can't you? It's available to non-members, as well.

i don't think it's his best either, but for an allnighter studio marathon, it certainly ain't too shabby. even if this isn't exactly a song i'll have on auto-repeat, at least we're getting some heartfelt lyrics and some more of that feverish one-man-band production that i love, if not for the melody, just for the energy.

Oh indeed, agree totally, I'm glad he actually brought this out 2 us, but i'll tell U what i do love about this, is that its not sad or depressing, it feels like at the need of a storm, where the skys r clearing away and out cums the sun, if u get what im sayying!

I finally heard it a few minutes ago and I like it right away. It reminds me of a song that Prince would've given Mavis Staples.

Yup. I love the sound of the instrumentation...I really loved the instrumental clip on the intro. My only problem is that lukewarm melody and the fact that it doesn't seem like the best time to be bitching about people who believe in the Holy Trinity.

I can't get the song either....I am on a Mac. Prince and the NPGMC do not support Macs anymore...if anyone could provide an .mp3 file, I would throw up the wild sign in appreciation!

I just thought it was more of the same, it really didn't perk my interest at all.

Just makes a stronger case for him putting out some Vault stuff.

SST is a quality Prince track.

As some of you mentioned it has that energy and passion of some of his best 'one-man band' productions. You can feel it through the song.

Also I just love the fact that he recorded this alone on Friday night and it was available to the masses on Saturday. Great stuff. Fresh and relevant.

Am I the only one who doesn't like this song?
I mean, I think it's ok but I think don't like the production. I had the same feeling with Reflection. The live version seemed far superior to me, not ruined by fake instruments and cheesy production.

But that is just my opinion, I'm glad people like it.

Who will b a guest in your tent?
Certainly not the ones who don’t wanna repent
And keep giving guns 2 the poorest of our nation’s sons.
Who is gonna call U by name?
With no confusion, trinity or preacher’s vain?
Who says that everytime
And opens up the eyes of the blind
Who will b the 1 in his bed?
Certainly not the 1’s who put thorn’s on his head
And wished him dead while they took his daily bread.
Which 1 is of value 2 U?
The 1 depleting the oil supply
Or the One that Renews it
And keeps the peace…
Like the groove in Sade’s Sweetest Taboo
Who will b a guest in your tent?
R U gonna b happy with how Ur life has been spent?
Did U have open arms 4 each and everyone U met
Or did U let them die in the rain?

Endless war, poverty or hurricane…
Then it’s time for another groove…
Like Sade’s Sweetest Taboo

It seems to me that Prince is in desire of a regime change on a MEAN level. Not a John Kerry instead of George Bush. I think he wants PEOPLE in charge instead of Democrats and republicans. It sometimes amazes me, how on occassion, Prince can be soooo subtle about something sooo important. It matches his philosiphy of always being different. EVERYONE is wearing shap tailored suits. He does to...but they're lopsided, he's ALWAYS gotta be different, at whatever cost. EVERYONE is up in arms and yelling at the gov't. He simply says what he says here.

that said...

aside from the lyrics...

like The Frog said...

...it's alright...

Aren't those drums real? I dunno, I'm so bad at telling that kind of stuff.
But I do like the sound of this one. It does sound a little dated, but in a timeless way. I think a lot of this Musicology era stuff will age gracefully precisely because it's not really chasing fleeting trends.

well, he didn't take the time to overproduce the living daylights out of 'em, but i see that as a good thing. i'm not 100% thrilled with the melody of the vocal side of the new work, but i love the energy - you can feel that crazed allnighter energy throughout, just like in some of the old bootleg demos...in fact, i think i even heard some doritos crunching in the background during the instrumental part! lol
