I played "Sign O the Times" in a college class I teach

I teach a freshman university seminar course at the college I work at. It's one of those classes where you learn about the campus history, alcohol responsibility, etc. Well, I told them the first day of class that I was a Prince fan and, like all the other classes I have taught before they ridiculed me. To an 18 year old (or most 18 year olds anyway) you might as well be up there talking about A Flock of Seagulls. Well, anyway I told them that all that was going on reminded me of my favorite Prince song, "Sign O The Times" and so I printed out the lyrics and played the song in class. I told them it came out the year that most of them were born and that nobody was singing about AIDS or crack or anything like that back then. I told them to consider the parallels in the song to what was going on now and they seem to get it. The Hurricane Annie line is all the more relevant of course in lieu of recent events. Some of them made fun of the song and one kid said it sounded like Michael. I told them that, um no it didn't and then went into a brief history of the rivalry between MJ and P in the 80's.

Didn't win any converts but at least I exposed them to a timeless and visionary song. I think I am going to play a Prince song in class every day from now on until I win over some new fans.

Good job man! It irks me that kids don't know or know very little about Prince but that's what we're here for. And what a perfect song to give them for what's going on today. In fact, Sign O The Times is in the Reflections room at NPGMC. You're in sync with what's happening.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Great - spend $30,000 a year to send a kid to college
so they can improve their musical choices.

Don't feel too bad about their lack of understanding. I thought that Stevie Wonder was an untalented cheesy song writer from his output during the 80's but then discovered Innervisions and the other classic 70's works so there is hope yet!

Very thought-provoking. Why not? I dedicated a good portion of a Masters paper on Prince to an explanation of "Sister."

It's not like I'm making them write a research paper on Prince's filmography. Actually, that's not a bad idea...

Seriously a class like this one, designed to be a communal experience where the students have a lot of discussions to build comraderie, allows for such frivolous excursions. And they pay me for it! biggrin

This thread rocks for so many reasons! And the person who started it - has my TOTAL respect. I myself will probably one day be a college professor also. I am 20 years old (soon to be 21) and am big Prince fan. It saddens me that most people don't appreciate his music. You are doing something awesome and I hope your students appreciate you and also what you are doing for the sake of their music taste. I know I do! Rock on!!!

I never thought the day would come that Prince would be considered "oldies" music but, lo and behold, here we are. biggrin

Why can't more of your peers share your views? You must infect the others with your music knowledge! biggrin

Maybe I should offer the students extra credit if they listen to an entire Prince album and write a review. Or an A for the course if they declare Prince fandom for life. My supervisor might not like that but I am trying to save this generation, damn it!

Hey G.L. Perhaps you should've have shown them the S.O.T.T movie. My 8 year old son swore up and down that Usher was better then Prince anyday, Until a few weeks ago when he sat down with me and watched Prince in the concert film. Now he asks to watch it all the time. He rewinds and plays back "Beautiful Night" and "The Cross" over and over again and jams with the music. Hey the college kids may still dislike Prince but they'll get a kick out of the performances, along with Sheila E. in that one-legged outfit. (Lord Have Mercy!)

U should play some slow jamz, cuz I played some of Prince's slow jamz for some of my friends who didn't really like Prince too much. I played Adore, Scandalous(The Passion) and eye Hate U(Quite Night Mix). They loved and enjoyed it, they liked the smooth beats, they said "That's hot", the other one said "Play some more Prince" (later the next day), "I didn't know Prince could sing that high"( reponse from Scandalous). When 2 R In Love as well. So they will probably enjoy the smooth slow jamz joints.
Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

- Hmm...I m not sure...most of his slow jams are sung in falsetto...and it annoys many people, specially men...

I think it depends on the friend you want to ´win´...for example, for a friend of mine who was a jazz player, I used to play the songs that had the best arrangements, jazzy moods...

If I wanted to ´win´ a rocker, I would play something like EndorphineMachine, or Interactive...

Ah, I forgot to say....congratulations to the guy who played it for his students. Great attitude!
