I, as much as anyone, maybe more than most, championed Prince during Purple Rain. As a guitarist, I was and am VERY influenced by Hendrix and Santana and Funkadelic. As a kid, that's one of the things that drew me to Prince in the first place. I was so happy that a black man, at that time, was doing that. Purple Rain, to me, what it represented, was and is, paramount. It's basically a tribute to Jimi and Sly & The Family Stone. Musically, in theme, and certainly, visually. The vibe of it influenced me greatly as a kid. BUT, the songs, the daring, innovative funk/rock of so much of the material on 1999, is on another level than Purple Rain. The songs on Purple Rain have more of what I call, a "pop sensibility". They're more pop oriented. "Take Me With U" & "I Would Die 4 U". Even though P has a masterpiece on there in "When Doves Cry". But the sheer brilliance of the 1999 album, to me, without question, has Prince's best playing, his best singing and his best songwriting, between the two albums. For the Jimi & Sly tribute..... Hmmm...tough choice. However, I'll go with 1999, 'cause the title track, LRC, Automatic, Lady Cab Driver, Delirious, DSMR - they spoke to me in a funky way that Purple Rain didn't. Don't get me wrong - I love "PR" and the guitar at the end of "Let's Go Crazy" is still one of my fave P moments. In my humble opinion, 1999 had more of a true mix of funk and rock. Purple Rain was more rock-oriented. Plus, "International Lover" is a classic - hopefully, I can still romance Halle Berry to this slow jam
To sum it all up - to me, 1999 signaled the full-fledged stylistic arrival of Prince to the hard-core P fans/fams. "Purple Rain" was the gift to the masses, his cross-over. We already knew about the talents of the Purple One. It was time for young Johnny and Amber and their parents, Tipper and Al to jump on the purple bandwagon. I don't have to think twice...
Purple Rain is a masterpiece! Songs like "Let's Go Crazy", "The Beautiful Ones", "Darling Nikki", "When Doves Cry" and the Title Track show Prince at the height of his "musical power"! This album is amazing from the very first second (...is there any other album intro as brilliant as the beginning of "let's go crazy"?) to the breathtaking finale of the anthemic "Purple Rain"!!! I think "Purple Rain" is more consistent and exciting (because of the variety of the different type of songs) than "1999". It also includes some of his finest pop songs like "Take Me With U", "I Would Die 4 U" and - of course - "When Doves Cry" which I think is a milestone because of the avantgarde arrangement it has! Don't get me wrong, I love both albums but I prefer "Purple Rain". I am such a hardcore fan and I feel this album is like "my Holy Bible" of my own Religion! Amen!

Hey BG, thanks for letting me know about this thread.
I have often wondered about this myself... and several of you are on the money. PR was a great launch to a fun musical movie... but for me 1999 was a journey. Take me with U and Baby I'm a star are great pop songs... but really in a way forgettable. I can't think of anything on 1999 that didn't blow my mind the first time I heard it. My then boyfriend had the 1999 LP and I thought he was crazy for spending that much money on a record... it was a double LP. But it was worth every penny. I really liked all the critics love you in NY. I thought the lyrics were a bit egotistical and in-your-face, and that is what made the song even better. It was the first glimpse at the confidence Prince felt in his musical abilities. Lady Cab driver was the jam! I like the hand claps on the off beat (you know what I mean?) it was not predictable beat and it sounded funky. The whole LP was more than a record. it was a musical experience "Remember, one man's filler is another man's killer" -- Haystack

Well, like I mentioned before, the guitar work on that album greatly shaped and fused what I would later play. There is no doubt about that. But at the same time, so did the lead guitar outburst on "Lady Cab Driver". On 1999, Prince taught me about blending styles together. How to incorporate funk with rock so it's a natural blend. As much as I learned from Funkadelic and Bootsy, I had already gotten schooled from Prince when it came to blending styles and making it work. That I credit to his work on the 1999 album. 1999 broke more barriers than any other album in Prince's canon. I have been very vocal in my absolute adoration of this album and obviously prefer to Purple Rain, althouth PR has many virtues as well. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

picking one of these is like trying 2 tell u which child i like more...
I love them all the same, but 4 different reasons.... 1999: it's just a hip, funky ride that once i put my headphones on, i shut my eyes and just groove thru it.... Purple Rain: i skip thru some of the classics like "Take Me with U" and "Baby I'm a Star" lol...actually, I can't hate on Purple Rain, it was the album/movie that made people I grew up with say "Hey Prince is cool" really..what can i say about either of these classics that hasn't been said... but...since the Z is putting the guitar 2 my head..... I always pop in "1999" b4 I put in "Purple Rain".....

And yes, "Lady Cab Driver" to this day, is a cut that I bump in my ride. As a matter of fact, I'll bump that, "Automatic", "International Lover", "Free", and "Something In The Water". I used to BLAST the whole Purple Rain album when I first started driving, especially "When Doves Cry" and "Let's Go Crazy". SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Hmm....it's very hard to choose.
I think I'll pick 1999 because it brings back some really cool memories for me. And it's not as played out (apart from the title track). <---- oh and LRC. [Edited 8/18/05 14:51pm] "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

1999...for several of the same reasons mentioned above: it's funkier, less commercial pop, not as played out, and I don't skip as many tracks.
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

I personally prefer to listen to 1999, but I know in my heart that Purple Rain is the best of the two, all things considered. Musically, 1999 is a (near) one-man band tour de force, but Purple Rain shows Prince opening his musical world and extending it. Where PR really wins is on emotional depth.`
However, since Purple Rain marked the point where Prince became a true household name and everyone's sister got into him, 1999 is a cooler record to listen to, not having been mainstream to the max. [Edited 8/18/05 20:17pm]

1999 without a doubt. IMO this is Prince's best album. I know most fans say "Sign O The Times", but not for me. "Free" alone is better than any balled on Purple Rain including Purple Rain (IN MY OPINION). As a matter of fact, since I was already into Prince before this, PR sounded pretty pop to me coming from Prince. I was actually a little disappointed. I was hoping for something super-funky following 1999. I just thought Prince put more of his personality in 1999. Purple Rain seemed more like an album that was crafted and designed to fit his movie. 1999 was an album of expression - much like "Controversy" only deeper. The 1999 material moved me much more than the PR material. I'm not saying I didn't like the PR stuff now, don't get me wrong. Between the two, I pick 1999, though.

Appreciation for both releases for different reasons makes this a tough call.
1999 is a sonic leap from the demo sounding Controversy and Purple Rain takes it a step further. Artistically, 1999 is a standout based on the musical genres it bridged (Funk, New Wave, R&B, etc) especially when the obvious comparison is made to the more popular (based on sales) Thriller. I'd have to agree with Anx's opinion that Purple Rain is a "far more fully realized" and focused record. Also, IMO, there's a more compelling statement being made with the release of PR beyond the actual music. I believe with PR's more Pop/Rock flavor, in conjuction with the movie, Prince is stating to the music industry in terms of marketing, "You will not bag me as a Funk/R&B artist". This is a financial statement and directly relates to $$$s. Miles Davis took a similar stance with the Jazz community by thumbing his nose at what they considered the appropriate music for a Jazz Artist... "I never thought that the music called "jazz" was ever meant to reach just a small group of people, or become a museum thing locked under glass like all other dead things that were once considered artistic." IMO, Prince is saying you're gonna have to give me access to the same money and visibility as the Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, Sting or any other big name/big money Pop/Rock act. It's part of Music Business 101. Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone and Michael Jackson were a few of a handful of black artists afforded this stature. I've noticed that there's a bit of a love/hate relationship going with PR as many old-school Prince fans feel that although this release pushed him into the mainstream arena and confirmed his credibility (to them anyway), it also meant they had to share their "pet" artist with a larger fan pool. Anyway, 1999 gets points for being the musically daring free-for-all that it is. But i'm picking Purple Rain for what I think are some political reasons Behind The Music. tA France countdown - T-Minus 5 days and counting. Damn B!! You've created a MONSTER of a thread (lol). I love "Purple Rain" because of the guitar licks, the Sly cum Jimi vibe, and the LP just brings back some good memories (and mammaries-lol)..but I'm gonna pick "1999". That LP was cutting edge for it's time. Prince took his influences from Gary Numan, Kraftwerk, ZAPP (even if he won't admit it), and George Clinton and took it to church. That LP influenced a lot of heads from PM Dawn to NIN to Pharell to Living Colour. I've even seen Vernon wear a cool "1999" pin for a long time. Even light "1999" ripoffs from Phil Collins, Shalamar, and the 1984 era Isley, Jasper, Isley picked up on the P "1999" vibe. Good thread brutha B..You're always on it!
