Overated & Underated Prince stuff...

This thread will be controversial, but HELL... that's me! lol

OVERATED STUFF!

Lovesexy (album/era)

This album is overated by fans in my opinion... obviously songs such as Alphabet St. & Annastesai are great! but there are also songs such as Dance On, I Wish U Heaven, Positivity etc... which i don't like. And i hate the front cover! and i think the whole Lovesexy era is overated by fans!

The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker & Condition of the heart

I don't get it... i don't like these songs, all fans praise them as classics and i just don't see it. None of them are catchy and both lack a great melody in my opinion... BORING...

For You (album

It isn't THAT bad... but, compared to the "prince" album it sucks... no real hit's. Poor melodies in most songs except i'm yours, S&W and Crazy You.

Parade Era

YUK!... i hate the gay outfits and all the screeching. It makes Prince look like a "pop star" rather than a serious musician. (However songs such as Girls and Boys & Kiss are AWESOME!!)

Thieves in the temple

Sucks...

UNDERATED STUFF

Musicology (the song)

This song is TOO funky! right from the "eeuwh" at the start... right to the finish! just listen to the beat and the funk... GROOOOVY!

Musicology album

Nearly a CLASSIC in my opinion... it has everything, pop/funk/jazz/rock & roll/ballads... what's not to like?

Uptown

I know most fans like this song... but it doesn't get the respect it deserves in my opinion. Most of you say that Head is better... and i TOTALLY dissagree... UPTOWN ROCKS!

My Name Is Prince

Just listen to the lyrics of all the verses... one of the best in y opinion!

The Hits The B Sides

May of you have been moaning about this package... it is the BEST greatest hits album by anyone ever!! it appeals to non fans because of the hits... and it appeals to the hardcore fans because ofthe B-Sides... SHOW SOME RESPECT lol lol

the whole parade era was when prince was at his peak. he couldn't put a foot wrong. after all if doesn't matter what he looks like or what hes doing, it just matters how good the music is.

parade, the tour and album are underrated if anything. just listen to the album. so many genres and styles i don't think there is anyone else EVER who could have made that album it is just the peak of popular music!

and what was so gay bout parade? confused

he said once he wasn't particularly proud of it and i think if you take each track one by one there isn't as much magic as the whole album as one product. just the whole flow and aura of the album was brilliant. the fact he recorded it and then released it straight away ( didn't sit on it like gold experience) made sure the album was kept to the bare minimum no overproduction but clean, clear n concise.
after all it was only the soundtrack to utcm. wink lol

Girls & Boys No! It's just okay. I'm not a fan of the same melody verse/chorus theme that plagues what would otherwise be Prince's best songs.
Sign o the Times (the song) NO WAY! this is one of his best songs ever!! Again okay, but I was disappointed in the live versions I saw last year.

I think the most underrated is the Truth album. I think it being packaged with Crystal Ball is part of the reason for this. However, there are some gems on that album - Man In A Uniform (so sexy and funky), Don't Play Me and One of Your Tears (sooooo sultry).

The Symbol album was also underrated. Sans the rap, there are some incredible songs on there, among them, the most underrated 3 Chains of Gold. That song is a rock opera and the guitar is masterful!

I don't know who you're talking to Tricky2, but I am 30 years old and have been a Prince fan since I was 8 - that's 22 years. I am not a newbie. I have most of his official releases (couldn't do Chaos) and a lot of other stuff too. I thought about the questions and this is what came to mind at the time. My choices are very underrated, and as a musician I understand the complexity of the music there. Most of Prince's older stuff receives praise, but people like you who ignore the newer stuff have missed some great music. It's not all great - but they are some magical moments. Stop being such a Prince snob. I hate how certain Prince fans think that if they name bootlegs, rare mixes or anything pre-Purple Rain that they're somehow superior to people who like anything else. People like what they like.
