I doubt anyone will say Musicology but that doesnt mean its a bad album.
Its a little unfair to compare any album to Purple Rain unless its SOTT or LoveSexy even 1999.

honestly..and i say this not to offend no one but i would chose neither. Musicology i excuse becuase i have not heard it. Purple rain to me sounds a bit fake, i mean the music was good and all. its just prince not being orginal sounds like he's trying to please a bigger audience,in which he did. i mean if you look back at works like dirty mind and 1999, and controversy thier prince expirementing but he gives us that "funky" signature he all to famous for...with that said..i dont want to get anyone mad..sorry its my opinion..

Prince just doesn't sound inspired or urgent on Musicology; it's nothing more than a laid back recycled mesh of stuff he's done before much, much better.

I think it was just an album he didn't put much effort in, since his real focus in 2004 seemed to be the tour.

Prince himself said about Musicology, "It's a record meant to accompany the concert experience."

That to me speaks volumes. Musicology isn't something he put his heart into, or tried with everything in him to make great.
