The Rainbow Children
after that I was prepared for greatness again. before that I kind of expected good solid albums but nothing, and I do mean "nothing" had prepared me for the magnificent of TRC. it did indeed make my heart beat tripple beat. the last album before TRC to make it do so was "The Truth" which I still think, to this day, is absolutely fantastic! and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

4 me, it was N.E.W.S. b4 then, The Rainbow Children. love The Rainbow Children. I did not expect that anymore from Prince. For me his best and most adventurous work since the 80s. Musicology has been a big let down. Il n'y a pas de sentiment plus exaltant que celui d'appartenir à une nation si diverse, si libre et si douée pour le bonheur.

it just doesn't do anything for me. the invididual songs are nice but the cringe factor is very very high on a lot of the songs and only about 6 good songs stand out on the disc to lift it slightly above mediocre. in retrospect, even New Power Soul was a more well balanced album and one that contained better musical ideas than Musicology, be it in a weaker execution. "Come On" and "The One" alone are better than almost anything on Musicology. And that is just comparing it to NPS. If we hold Musicology next to "The Rainbow Children", comparisons are almost laughable to make since there are none. TRC is a dinosaur, Musicology is at best a guinnea pig. very pet friendly but hardly a match. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

But how come Musicology was WAAAAAY more succesfull and popular?... because it had better songs lke the title track and dear mr.man etc... Musicology was not a better album. It sold better. There is a huge difference between those two. The RainbowChildren sold about 100,000 copies at a time when Prince's popularity had hit an all time low. It was also his best album since many years. It was the old unpredictable Prince again that made you hold your breath and set you on the wrong foot over and over again during the course of an album. I loved it. Musicology is by all means a good album, but it's not a good Prince album. It's boring and bland and far too easy. It's a second volume of Rave (which was an attempt at a commercial comeback as well). In accordance, Rave suffered from the same lack of real good songs in favor of pop noodles made for an easy access to a pop audience again. Rave flopped miserably. So would Musicology have done if he hadn't whored himself all over the tv radio and magazines. Starting with the Grammies and ending god knows where. Plus he gave away all those free copies of the album to every 1 of the people who bought a ticket, thus keeping the album in the charts for nearly a year which kept it on display in the stores and got more people to see it and buy it. Very clever marketing and very well done. Plus, he deserved it. He's one of the greatest musicians of all time and he keeps coming up with clever stuff like the give away cds to get yourself high on the charts and be seen in the stores again. That's fucking brilliant. However, all of that still doesn't make Musicology a very good album. But it serves it's purpose. It's a decent, if a bit boring and cringeworty, album and it will make the people who've got a copy take note if there's a bit of a stir again about his NEXT album. I just pray to god that his next album will be a deeper and more lasting experience that we won't wear out in a month or two three. I want something like Dirty Mind, TRC, Sign o the Times or The Truth. Albums that last you a decade or three or four. Not an album that lasts a summer. I'm done ranting now and will refrain from drinking any more coffee today. thank you for your patience figuredijustneededaneditedit [Edited 7/25/05 5:15am] and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Isn't that what Prince wanted it 2 do, Isten? love well yes. I've already given up the idea of knowing things better than Prince himself lol. I can see what he wanted this album to accomplish n what it serves as a stepping stone toward. I just wish he wouldn't make us wait this long for it and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

He could not have done a RC or News on the last tour. He needed to do something commercial and he was right on time with the Musicology release.

TGE!!!
It already had a different sound but it was the last P album that blew me(and a lot of cricics)away. It's strange, because every P album sounds different from the early 80's,but the last album with the REAL Prince sound and arrangements was o-> But I'm not one of those who thinks He has lost it since then!!! TRC didn't do much 4 me,but I love :She loves me 4 me and 1+1+1=3. At first I was very xcited about Musicology, afterwords I didn't listen 2 it anymore. Well,I've listened 2 it again recently and it is a GOOD album! Musicology,What do U want me 2 do?,Illusion,pimp,....,Call my name, A million days and YES..even Life O'Party! I really don't know what's wrong with these songs????? It's his first album after a long time that really fits into his catalogue, after TGE or Emancipation!! All the albums between were kind off left-overs..imo. Anyway, our xpectations are always 2 great when an album comes out, WE were spoiled the last 15 years!!!, but after a few months or even a year, our judgement is much better. Love4oneanother

indeed he was. and i'm not knocking the album at all since it's great for what it was meant to be. I just didn't like it as much as his more introspective work. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Sign of the times...I've been waiting for that feeling again ever since.
Emanicipation and Gold had a few moments and Lovesexy was interesting but just did not produce same thrill that running and getting the new Prince album that i got from ATWIAD, PARADE and SOTT...

IstenSzek gave a great answer to that question. But come on, do you REALLY think that an album's commercial success is completely dependent on the quality of the material contained therein? And to look at it from the other side of the same coin - an album's commercial success does not denote the quality of the music. ESPECIALLY in this day and age. Don't worry, I can't get pregnant - my ovaries are diseased......
