OLD FRIENDS 4 SALE is my all time favorite PRINCE song. But I like the original not the one on the vault.

it's a great little bag of songs and it works well,
eventho they've been pulled from different projects

shame shame shame about the "new" Old Friends 4 Sale
since the original is, indeed, one of his best songs
ever.

However, it's a nice enough collection that I do
still enjoy listening to on a regular basis.
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I LOVE THIS CD.

Old friends for sale got me through a tough time when I lost my best friend.
It just shows friends do use you for what you have at times and leave.

I could also relate 5 women+. I love those two tracks but they all are great!

shrug Okay, I guess I'm one of the few who think that Prince improved upon "Old Friends 4 Sale" with the new version. The lyrics are better, and so is the music. Say what you will, but I've learned not to let the sentimental value of an earlier draft of a song outweigh the finer rewrite. boxed

Is the new version of Old Friends 4 sale really that different or is it just little things he changed around?

I also love that CD. It also contains one of my favorite songs of all time - 5 women!!
"When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really donĀ“t like the idea that he could have it all."

You be the judge.

Old Friends 4 Sale

The sun set in my heart this evenin'
Cuz an old friend of mine got lost in the jive
Little did she know, when U're stuck in the snow
Nobody gets out alive

Tears fall gently in my garden
As I wait in vain 4 my sweet baby 2 call
I guess what my own brother told me was true
He had been with my sweet baby and she never really loved me at all

Night fell so dark this evenin'
The moon wasn't shinin' nowhere
Sometimes that old light in the alley would light up this old heart of mine
But now I'm wonderin' if there's someone up there who really cares

The night fell darkest in Persia
What used 2 flow blue is now flowin' black
Many a doctor can try, but only heaven knows why
When it comes 2 love
Why do some men, why do some men turn their backs?

Can't somebody please tell me?

Maybe the morning air will make me feel better
Oh, I hope better than I feel right now
Last night a stranger took my picture and then he, uh..
He asked if I'd buy it, huh
I said I guess I don't know how

Old, old friends 4 sale
Get'em while the gettin' is hot
But U better watch out, they'll kiss U until they get what U got
And they'll show U the friends that they're not
Old friends 4 sale

Old Friends 4 Sale

The sun set in the west this mornin'
4 I know, I know L.A. is callin'
Bad news, Steve said, and people are talkin'
They say your kingdom is fallin', yeah
They say U lost your fire
When another musician U hired
Little do they know, U wouldn't have passed go
Unless they could take U higher, yeah

The sun set in my heart this afternoon
4 2 friends of mine got stuck in the snow
In Uptown when winter's alarmin', oh
Cocaine becomes charmin'
But U talk about things U don't know 'bout I know,
no matter how pleasant your past was
Green and white return 2 blue
U're happy as long as your last buzz
And then U think U want something new, yeah

The sun, the sun set in my mind this evening
4 someone who said they would die 4 me
Sold some, they sold some more pictures and all my little memories
Chump change is 2 unravel the mystery, ah ha
But life is no fun, life ain't no fun without fantasy
Some things are better left unsaid
And some people are better left untrusted
Maybe, maybe, maybe it'll all make sense when I'm dead When I'm dead

Old friends 4 sale
Get'em while the gettin' is hot
Watch out, they'll kiss U until they get what U got
And they'll show U the friends that they're not
Old friends 4 sale

"It's about that walk" is one of my favorites, although I don't think anyone else ever mentions it.

BUT MY ABSOLUTE FAV ON VAULT is "Sarah!" The lyrics are hella funny. He's broken hearted and looking for the woman he loves then when he thinks he sees her he starts talkin' shit.

I love how he rolls his tongue and growls in a gravelly voice: "Sarah, oh Sarah, honey is that you?!"

OMG... those are my favorite two songs on that CD. Sarah is most definetly my favorite Prince song... at least right now, but it has been for awhile. I agree with everything you said.

Reading the lyrics to both versions of Old Friends, and I'm kind of thinking that they are both equally good sets of lyrics- almost. I think a lot of people prefer the lyrics of the first version because it's more relatable to most people. The second version is mostly just relatable to Prince himself. I'm also not crazy about the line about someone asking to buy his picture, doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

But I think the second version gets a bad rap.

The music itself is a different argument, but I love both arrangements, they're both different and present interesting musical ideas. The first version, musically, does seem a little more personal or introspective, and it is nice to hear him so low key.

I might have to give an edge to the '85 version, and I certainly hope we get to hear it in full quality one day.

pray A moment of silent reflection for "There is Lonely."

Because it's like nothing else in this world.

I love how he deepens his voice to show different shades of lonliness. It's an incredibly brilliant spoken poetry device.

And comparing his feeling of forsakenness to how Cain must have felt when he killed Abel and then realized that his only parallel in life was gone --outstanding. And he feel even lower than that.

Something has happened in this song to make the character question his whole existence and Prince conveys that wonderfully. And then to realize not even God can help ("How in HEAVEN will I ever be alright." ) is moving.

This song is a masterpiece, and way too short.
