Does anyone know what Prince thought of TTD when he first came on the sceane? They both had that similar kinda vibe and androgonus look. Actually they looked VERY similar and had that cool sound. I was just wondering if Prince was like "He is ripping me off" and what he thinks of TTD now.

I dug him from the get go.Though the comparisons seemed obvious with Prince,he stood above the rest of the wanna be purple clones. TTD was a great vocalist and performer - very charismatic. His first album was obviously a massive hit - but I didn't think of comparing him to Prince until the second album, where basically he fired his backing band and decided to write, perform, arrange and produce it all himself.

Hmmmm, where I've heard that before? He was like following Prince's career on hyperspeed. The second album was a bit bonkers but had it's interesting moments - but it did suffer from TTDs inexperience and massive ego which made him think everything he did was genius.

The third album was Symphony Or Damn, which has some fantastic songs on it (Delicate with Des'ree was great) and was far more well rounded. The fourth album 'Vibrator' again had some great tracks on it, but by this time he'd just fallen out of favour with the general public.

Then he changed his name to Sananda because his 'spirit' told him to (hmmm, where have I heard someone doing something similar...?)

Talented, underrated, but definately sabotaged by his own arrogance. Very much like Prince in those terms!

I couldn't stand TTD, he was never in the running for the crown anyway.....
He's great live, but he played himself right at the start of his career.

I remember when TTD was hot, around 88, I remember reading something about P thought he was cool, P aint a player hater

TTD said he kissed Prince ON THE LIPS...neither barfed...I think that says it.

i could swear i remember hearing about Prince showing up and performing with D'arby at a couple dates in London or thereabouts back in '88 or so... can someone confirm? like Prince, D'arby has a huge amount of talent and knows it which has often worked against him, making him his own worst enemy -- i have a great amount of respect for him, and i hope he continues to share his creativity

That used to be my jam.
And I do agree that he had a "Prince vibe" thing going on.

The similarities with P, to me, start and stop with his stage presence and his control of his band.

TTD's voice is out of this world, his lyrics are poetry in the truest sense of the word, and his more immediate and identifiable influences don't seem to include Prince as much as this board would suggest. I see/hear far more Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Rod Stewart, James Brown and Beatles influences than I do Prince.

Personally, I think TTD the artist was compared to Prince for the same reason Prince the guitarist often was compared to Hendrix.

If Cuba Gooding Jr. Played guitar onstage, he'd be compared with Prince.

I can't confirm any dates in '88 but during the Lovesexy intermission in Worcester Massachusetts he played Wishing Well amongst a bunch of other tunes. That surprised me cuz I thought that he had this huge chip on his shoulder when it came to other artists who were compared to him, like TTD.

Anyway after TTD played in Mpls at First Ave back in 94 or 95--and P was in the audience--P did his usual gig(usual for that period) out at Paisley afterwards. He and the NPG played for hours and we all waited for TTD to come out and play with him. P played until about 4:30-ish and when TTD's band showed it was too late for them to play together.

BTW, it will always be my favorite night of music: to see my two favorite musical angels in one night was such a gift, not only that... Prince let me sing on his gun mic during Letitgo and thank God my sister was with me cuz I wouldn't have been able to tell anyone cuz nobody would've believed me otherwise!

I still miss those Paisley aftershows...we were so spoiled back in the day, but I have some amazing memories! (Thanks P!!)

And yes, I agree with ThreadBare... TTD's lyrics are pure poetry! And his voice is distinctly different than Prince's -- much more similar to Sam Cooke & Otis Redding.

ive been going to gigs for 20 odd years now !!! ant ive seen ttd 3 times they were 3 of the best gigs ive ever seen !! even took along a friend once who wasnt a fan and he was totally blown away by terence !!! his acapella live shit is out of this fuckin world and any other !!!

Wishing Well, Sign My Name, and If You All Get to Heaven are up there with the best of Prince songs.


Bet Prince wishes he'd written those. (And if he'd worked with TTD, he probably would have stolen 'em)

During the '80's, with songs like 'Wishing Well' riding high, TTD appeared on children's BBC TV - Saturday morning. He carried a cane reminiscent of those sported by Prince. When asked where it had come from, he said shyly that it was a gift from a friend and acted coy about its origins as if the friend was someone well-known - but refused to reveal the person's identity when asked. It might have been a publicity stunt - but to my mind it was unlikely that people other than Prince fans would have made any possible connection.

(On the same show he also managed whilst lip-synching to his latest hit to execute a spin which resulted him slipping and falling over. At that point the cameras cut to another shot only to switch back as he picked himself up off the floor.)
