Wendy & Lisa vs. Prince (You Choose)

I think Wendy & Lisa didn't get the recognition they deserve at all. Actually 1989's "Fruit at the Bottom" and 1990's "Eroica",were very good Cd's. While Prince gave out crap with Batman and that stupid "Graffiti Bridge" garbage, I'd say Wendy & Lisa blew him out of the water during that time.

Their first Cd "Wendy & Lisa" was good also, but "LoveSexy" was release that year, 1988, so it's hard to tell.

i liked fruit at the bottom, but i liked what prince was doing around that time better, even though i wouldn't necessarily call it his best work ever. can't really get into eroica or girl bros., though i do give them a spin once or twice a year in hopes that my tastes have changed or grown and i'm suddenly able to embrace these albums. never happens. i do really like their first album, though.

I love the Girl Bros.

They are great musicians and excellent songwriters.

They brought Prince to new avenues of songcraft.

But Prince is Prince.

And they are not.

I'm sorry batmanx, I was just being an ass. I do like the girls, but I'll
take Prince if I had to choose.

Oh well, I'm sure others may agree with me.

I just wish they'd had more exposure.

The thing about W&L is that they dont care about the charts or about R Kelly or Beyonce et al. They dont try to be cool by name checking Erika Badu, Common etc. And they havent compromised their music through political/social/religious statements. All W&L really care about is making good music. Fruit and Eroica are examples of true artists working to create art. (girl bros just wasnt as good)

For all his bravado, Prince is plagued by insecurities.

Since about 1990 Prince has been trying to create "art" but also trying to make a "hit" (dont even act like he doesnt), trying to score points against the music industry, trying to establish "street cred", and most of all, has been pushing his vision of a "theocratic order" (whatever that means but it doesnt sound very nice). Sure a song could "say something" other than "i love you" but the message shouldn't overpower the music.

I agree with this, but this doesn't lead down the road to which is better. Two great albums don't stand up to 28 years of music. As for the orger saying

'For all his bravado, Prince is plagued by insecurities.

W & L have issues too. Their songs are totally revolving around relationship issues and Girl Bros. was very depressing. Probably, because Wendy's brother died from OD'ing. Regardless, not taken chances should not mistaken for being above charting or not. The girls wouldn't be in the financial position to sit back and write music without Prince. It's questionable if we'd even know who they were with out Prince.

They're both cool

Absolutely. No Contest. I LOVE the girls and they are talented as musicians and songwriters. However, their creative output certainly did not match up to his. And if they were THAT integral to his music...their music would have been better than it was and his would have been worse once they parted.

They influenced each other that is all....well maybe not ALL... biggrin

hmmm really? I think it's the best of the 3. They had dropped the purple popb stuff and were really starting to make their own sound, which was gritty and grounded.

Guess I am surprised at your answer is all.

Girl Bros...I completely understand. The whole album was way held back in sound and Lisa sings. I think Wendy is the better singer...definitely.

its interesting, during the Apple seminar Lisa commented that she has to use a special mic because she has a soft voice. yet, in her earlier prince days (the stick....1999, heck even during the rehearsal of When The Saints Come Marching In during that booted soundcheck) you can hear her voice is strong....

i wonder if its more her vocal execution or style that she is shooting for....or maybe her voice has softened with age...who knows...but i actually prefer her singing to wendys..wendy is too much of a belter. she sounds like a closeted Ethel Merman fan at times...

Princes music was way more cutting edge and ahead of the game when it was influenced by Wendy & Lisa...it just was. The records prove it. There was a much more complete, rich, yet abstact sound that was pure art. Every time I listen to the music The Revolution made it makes me sad that it's all over. I love his music during those collaborations. His music now doesn't really have urgency or cohesiveness. It's just alright.

But I like "this is the life" and a few of her others. I think it may have been the production of the disc. Also, not sure why...but the whole Jonathan theme probably would make me sad to listen to it.

He is a musician in the music industry. He needs to sell records at some point in time. Prince kind of balances out having a hit (noting wrong with that in my opinion) and during something artistic. The brother knows how to balance the two. I can't say the same for W&L. His output pretty much smokes theirs. I don't think there is a contest because I don't think W&L are insterested in making their music accesible to the masses. That is their choice but don't knock Prince for making some of his music commercial.

The may be ture but abstact and rich does not always sell or appeal to the masses. Prince lost so many fans with ATWIAD and Parade. One recording would have been fine but two back to back really brought him down in the eyes of the public. At the end of the day he has to sell records.
