I think the biggest issue for W&L was that no one knew how to market them. I still find their stuff in the R&B section...or Under Prince. Yet without marketabilitiy, they still amnaged to be critically acclaimed and were one of the ones to start the current trend of Girl rockers ala Sheryl Crow and the like.

Anxiety

i adore lisa's voice - if anything, that's a strong point of girl bros. to me. i like wendy's vocals too, but there's always been something equally delicate and slightly psychotic to lisa's singing voice. and of course, i really love lisa's piano playing.

eroica just never did it for me. there have been a couple of times when i played it all the way through when i was cleaning or reading and it was pleasant enough, but it's just not the style of music i like, no matter who's playing it. maybe if i heard them live, it would put their studio stuff in a different perspective for me. lord knows i'm terribly in favor of them as people.

stop talking like wendy and lisa are so much importent for prince career.
before wendy come to join the band ,prince already invented "minneapolis sound".

all of purple rain songs were written and recorded by prince.

he gave them credit to make them importent.

for example wendy was claiming that she wrote a big part of purple rain.
what a lie.
prince started playing chords for purple rain(this statement is by dez dickerson ) ,before wendy come to the picture.

wendy was an ok rhythm guitar player.
but she was awfull lead guitar player.

her leads were so disconnected,so sloppy that make me wonder why prince even signed her as his band member.

and please don't tell me how she was very young.that jonny lang guy was 10 times better player at 15 years old then wendy would ever be.

the only real contribution i see by this girls is parade album.
while great album i feel it was a bit incosistent.

i think prince and those girls wanted to make experimental album but they didn't know what direction to take.

i mean look at the song choices.
does kiss belong to that album?

i think wendy and lisa made solid solo albums ,but nothing groundbreaking.
because they needed prince to make something great.it's very dumb thing to say that prince always wants to make a hit while wendy and lisa are only about music.
every musicians dream is that people hear their music.if it's not like that.they would be playing in their living rooms.not on the records.

face it people prince was,is the real genius.you think wendy and lisa had so big impact only because you saw that in the movie.
but it is only a movie.

hmmm really? I think it's the best of the 3. They had dropped the purple popb stuff and were really starting to make their own sound, which was gritty and grounded.

Guess I am surprised at your answer is all.

Girl Bros...I completely understand. The whole album was way held back in sound and Lisa sings. I think Wendy is the better singer...definitely.

its interesting, during the Apple seminar Lisa commented that she has to use a special mic because she has a soft voice. yet, in her earlier prince days (the stick....1999, heck even during the rehearsal of When The Saints Come Marching In during that booted soundcheck) you can hear her voice is strong....

i wonder if its more her vocal execution or style that she is shooting for....or maybe her voice has softened with age...who knows...but i actually prefer her singing to wendys..wendy is too much of a belter. she sounds like a closeted Ethel Merman fan at times...

I agreed Lisa is a better singer even though my girl Wendy is my favorite for her personality and guitarist. Funny how Prince had praised Lisa's voice but never Wendy's. I wished Lisa had sang more in their albums and she had sing a lot on Girls Bros but hopefully that would change in their upcoming album. I dont know why her voice is soft it probably has to do with her shyness because didnt she mention in interview that she like to be a background musician and singer? and when she was fired from the revolution she was forced to be a have much bigger role as a co-leading voice role and also other roles too on their albums. Lisa sang good on 1999 and too bad many people dont know it is her and my friend thought it was Jill at first sang the female leading. I said Lisa sang the beginning of the song while Jill joined toward the end I beleieved. So I email the girls and I thinked Wendy emailed me back when she used to have more in hand of their old site years ago that it was Lisa sang most of the female lead. So I won the arguement.

heres my issue about the whole wendy lead guitar dealio...the girl was only 18. she has evolved to an awesome guitar player in her own right though....she actually has lead guitar on almost all of rob thomas' new cd (now i know rob aint the shitsnay but still....hehehehe)..

and i would say they were groundbreaking...eroica is sited as the template for the whole lilith movement that blew up (during a time which they didnt have a label)...and they seem to have inspired a whole lot of today's woman to pick up guitars and not be afraid to be themselves.....

i personally think that if someone released their music as a solo artist it would have sold better...but how many female duo's have had success? besides salt n pepa i cant think of one...add the fact that they played soul/alt/pop...talk about a tough sell..

shoot, look at teena marie.....

and yes, prince is the genius....i like the fact that todays wendy and lisa's fans seem to be more into them via working with acts like seal and neil finn....they seem to appreciate their past but also appreciate their own genius...

power fantastic and what lisa did on bitter is forever testament of that..

Hey, Wendy and Lisa did Prince a favor. Had they not worked with him and helped fill up the vault, his music would have become a lot less interesting a hell of a lot sooner. ATWIAD and Parade showed that Prince was a force to be reckoned with, that he was more than one flavor.

thebanishedone, summed up a great deal of my feelings on the topic. A few songs does not a genius make. Wendy and Lisa made some great music WITH Prince, but Prince was already a major force in the music industry. Everyone knew that Prince was the genius in the camp because he released albums like Dirty Mind, Controversy, 1999, and Purple Rain. Wendy and Lisa were good in the sense that Prince's music became experimental, but as much as I love Parade and ATWIAD, they are no where near as groundbreaking as Prince's solo work. I'm just being honest.

Regarding the comment made about W&L being more concerned about making music and not making hits is a joke. If Prince was concerned about making hits he would have never made the majority of Dirty Mind, nor would he have made the rest of 1999 outside of side one of the 1st LP, Lovesexy, etc.

Last comment about Wendy as a lead guitar player, I agree during the time she was with Prince she was mediocre at best. Whenever I hear her playing live on boots or in vids I always wonder how the guitar work would have sounded had Dez, Miko Weaver or Levi played. Dez and Miko were the best lead guitarists Prince ever had. Dez's solo on Little Red Corvette is mindblowing and whenever I hear Wendy play it in concert I am underwhelmed. The same with the Prince solos she attempted live, most notably When Doves Cry and Darling Nikki.

I respect Wendy and Lisa, but to put them on the level with Prince is insulting to his talents and I'm sure they would even tell you that.

anymore. How did we come to even compare Prince to Wendy? Maybe Prince to

Though I agree with some previous post that eroica is the best of the first three albums, it being more mature and all; I just have to say that "girlbros" is one of my all time favorite albums... the whole atmosphere it breathes, the coping with the intense sadness of al loss is wonderfully brought. Maybe it's because I'm sort of a "blue-type" myself boxed ...dunno. Beautiful, beautiful album. touched

Whenever I will read a comment from you I´ll remember this totally absurd remark. You can be lucky, that in the end taste is not a matter of wrong and right.
But if you refer "better" to creativity and handicraft then you´re just wrong.
(I don´t think that it´s really necessary to specify at least 7 or 8 great albums without Wend & Lisa.)

umm..that was all a joke..

but, let me give you a different perspective (from someone who learned about prince via wendy and lisa)....i think lisa is a genius for the simple reason that she does something to me with her piano playing that no other pianist has done..it resenates with me...i feel her emotions being conveyed. sometimes i wish she would just release her piano improvasations because i get chills every time i hear her play...

now, i dont get that same reaction when i hear prince....doesnt mean i dont think he is a musical genius, because he is...

but...i prefer wendy and lisa's music (and listen to their music) much more then i do prince...i have to be in a certain mood to enjoy prince. and his collection of work after lovesexy has done nothing for me.....nothing.

and yet theres the question of whom contributed what to prince's earlier successes.....im sure andre, dez, dr. fink and morris would to talk about that..

but in the end, it was prince's whole package (great looks, freaky attitude and yes genius) that won him a large audience.....and luck i might add...

cha know, in the early eighties radio and mtv wouldnt play two female artist in a row out of fear they would loose the audience..so lets not act like wendy and lisa had a fair playing field.....and lets not even get into the label's fears of selling a act that most of the music buying audience considered were lesbians (years before kd and melissa ethridge made it hip).....

aight..thats the end of my rant..

Yeah. Other observation: in the artistic world the view on homosexuality ( or flirting with it ) has shifted from "hip" to "intellectual", while with women it has shifted from "alternative" ("they must be muffy alternative girls who don't shave") to "sexy" ("bimbos who in the end are so into doing a man together"). Please. This marketing & sociology mix is undrinkable. disbelief

I dunno, to me this is like saying choose between Sly and Larry Graham, because Graham went on to success without Sly. However, Graham is not on Sly's level and Sly would have still been a genius/legend without having Graham in the fold. Now I'm not taking anything away from Graham because he is a serious talent and a bass guitar genius. But I just think that the term genius gets tossed around too easily. I'm sorry but Wendy and Lisa are not in that genius category. That is a tough class to break into, we're talking, James , Sly, Stevie, Marvin Gaye, John Lennon, Little Richard, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis etc. These cats took music to another level and shaped a sound that everyone followed. When Miles Davis, Eric Clapton etc. talk about why they love Prince and think he's a genius they don't comeback with "yeah but Wendy and Lisa were geniuses as well". Furthermore, they realize that Prince was the brains behind all of that work. He had talent around him, but HE brought everything together.

Everyone always talks about Prince benefiting from collaborating with W&L, but maybe just maybe they benefited more from working with him. Prince is a consummate musician(live and in studio) and I think we are losing sight of the fact that HE plays all types of music, not just experimental folksy rock. Prince's 80's output would have been as staggering or possibly more, with or without them in the fold because he was at his creative peak. All genius musicians have that run where everything they touch turns to gold and I think the Revolution benefited by catching Prince during his run. Stevie Wonder worked with great musicians during his legendary 1970s run, and they had input on certain songs and influenced certain sounds. Yet, Wonder was still THE genius and would have become what he did with or without those around him. Hell Prince was writing and producing great music for himself and others all throughout the 1980's long before W&L became vital cogs in his band (see What Time Is It?).

Also, some argue that W&L actually messed up Prince's sound because he let them have a little too much input. I do think that Prince lost a little of his edge when he was working with the Revolution. One or two songs of their experimentations was good, but full albums of that stuff was a bit much and deviated from his work. He was experimenting but he was not covering any new ground or creating new sounds. As much as I love the W&L collabs, they didn't do anything NEW with him. Anyone with a grasp of 60's rock had heard all of that before. Prince was more forward thinking before the ATWIAD/Parade era. 1999, Dirty Mind, Purple Rain, Controversy, and Sign are so good because they are not like anything you've heard. Even with Parade, Prince was the one that played the opening medley on drums in one live take, now THAT's genius. Power Fantastic is one of my favs and its a beautiful song, but I love it because it reminds me of Miles Davis' work with Gil Evans not because it was anything new. However, its no If I Was Your Girlfriend, Controversy, Little Red Corvette, Something In The Water (Does Not Compute), The Ballad of Dorthy Parker, Darling Nikki, etc. Those songs have a creativity that is unmatched and they didn't sound like anyone else. That stinging guitar lick in Darling Nikki, the bassline and mastery of the beat machine in The Ballad of Dorothy P...all Prince.

We have to keep the term genius in perspective because throwing that term around is an insult to everyone in that category. Furthermore, there are only a handful of geniuses in popular music. There are good studio musicians and I would put W&L in that category.

He had talent around him, but HE brought everything together.

if you look outside the rhelm of funk/soul many o artist have had high praise and called wendy and lisa geniuses..

expecially the up and coming girls in rock..they seem to worship them...they were pioneers to these girls. ya didnt have female musicians out in front like that at that point.
its all relative cha know?

Yes it is all relative...and I'm sure they have influenced countless people, but the legends I listed above are in a different league. Go back and re-read what you quoted in my post you will see that I did look outside the funk and soul realm, Miles Davis (Jazz), Eric Clapton(rock) and Little Richard (The Damn Architect of Rock and Roll)are clearly stated. Do not trivialize my statement with that funk/soul argument because my knowledge of music is far deeper than that luv. Getting enormous amonunts of credit from the likes of Miles Davis, Carlos Santana, Little Richard, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Herbie Hancock, Robert Plant and Stevie Wonder is incomparable. I will say this for the last time, the term genius is devalued when it is thrown around too easily.

nicely explained above me.
Made think of an interview when George Clinton (I'd put in that class) explained thing picked up for Parliment when the snagged Bootsie Collins from James Brown.
You need good player to get to the next level.

nod I agree with both statements and yes George is DEFINITELY in that class.

interesting that all the people you reference are men. women havent even been giving a chance to build stature like that..you have to keep that in mind too....

ill throw the only woman alive who i think would fall in your category of living genius, Bonnie Raitt. A self-confessed fan of Wendy & Lisa...And Joni Mitchell has expressed her respect for them as well. (joni is soo in that league.) But there just arent that many female musicians to be able to access their impact. Another one with the potential of becoming a legend? Meshell...once again, has always given her respect for their talents....

so you see, its just not fair to make that call when woman just havent had the chance to compete with the men in the past.

Yes I listed all men, and I didn't list any women, hell I didn't even list all the people I feel are genius musicians. Joni Mitchell, Bonnie Raitt,Roberta Flack, Carol King and Aretha Franklin are all in that category as well. I'm a big fan of Meshell Ndegeocello and at this rate she will cruise into the genius club. But not deviating from the point I made in my intial posts...the term GENIUS gets thrown around to easily. W&L are talented but they are not on that GENIUS level, that's a small category. I'm not taking anything away from their abilites because I have immense respect for them, but comparing them with Prince is so inaccurate.

I agree that women were/are not allowed to compete, but welcome to the club. Sly Stone, James Brown, Little Richard, Carlos Santana and even Prince, don't get the respect they deserve from the music press. White Male Rockers get all the credit, while women and non-whites are not given the across the board recognition.
