I think this album stands the test of time...Delirious is the only song that I've never been able 2 get in2. Something in the water was THE song that really hooked me 4 life...It's that angry/insecure Prince that I'll always love and identify with...The lyrics 2 that song just hit home!

1999 is a landmark acheivment on several levels.
It fused pop, funk and rock to a higher degree then what had been done before. This is the album Rick James always wanted to make. It helped pave the way for industrial, techno and crossover pop. In many ways 1999 legitimized the use of drum machines and synthesizes on a "serious"album. Prince was on the very cutting edge back then in his drum machine use and if you listen to other albums at that time that used the Linn drum machine they sound hollow and tinny. The drum machines on 1999 are full and enveloping. The extended songs were a portend to prince's innovative 12' releases that would come in the mid-80s where instead of simply looping sequences prince extended the concept of the songs. Additionally, artists such as Trent Reznor have pointed to prince's amazing ability to create tenstion between instruments as a mostly one man band on this album as being hugely influential.
And, as Alan Leeds has pointed out, it gave prince the keys to open the doors for Purple Rain..
The songs on 1999 were sexed up for sure but there was a keenly intelligent psycho analysis going on underneath the obvious innuendo. Really brilliant stuff if you pay close attention.
Besides all that it has some ridiculously great songs.
I've seen people slap LRC. I know we've heard that song a million times, but come on. It's one of the great, rock sex metaphors in music history. A masterpiece of pop.
And 1999, please guys, this song is big, bold and brilliant. Again don't mistake hearing a song a billion times for and becoming bored or for lack of quality. Keep in mind it's been over 20 years since this thing came out. To me it still sounds fresh in many ways. Certainly, it has aged- but it has aged like a great wine...

I've lost count of how many times I've listened to the "1999" album, and yet it still leaves me cold. Sure, there are some good tracks, but most of them go on for waaaaay too long. Strange that I feel this way, seeing as it was the tracks "1999", "Little Red Corvette" and then Purple Rain's "When Doves Cry" that got me into Prince in the first place, so the album is definitely from around my era.

Little Red Corvette is really mainstream and boring. Automatic is too long and I´ve heard 1999 a little bit too often since 1982. In the 80s the album was really big and innovativ, now it´s just good. (Lady Cab Driver is still great!)

C'mon dude. If an album is great when it comes out it's always great. 22 years have passed, but that doesn't mean it's not great, just some age on it now.

Well, you´re simply right! Maybe I was in a bad mood.

1999, one of my favorite albums ever. I don't know how anyone can hate this masterpiece. It shows Prince at his funkiest. I wish I was older to have been able to witness this and understand it all. I was awestruck when I finally got 1999 in 1994. It still knocks me out. How can you mess with LRC, 1999, D.M.S.R., Automatic, Something In The Water, damn the whole album?! Man, I got to listen to this tonight, y'all got me all excited now.

1999 4ever!!!!
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

1999 was one of a kind. The length of the songs gave you an opportunity to absorb the unique Prince sound and stylings. It was always my favorite album to listen to with headphones on, there is so many things to listen to in the backround. Plus in 82 there was nothing like it. Purple Rain started out the same way but eventually the songs were shortened. I wish some of the songs kept going though, like D.M.S.R.,Let's Pretend and Automatic, they are simply incredible. Plus the b-sides of the singles released are album worthy. Horny Toad is better than Delirious. This was the start of the Purple Reign, an incredibly important time in his musical output, A+ material from 1999 to The Hits album.
It's so funny to hear new fans talk about Prince albums that have been out for over 20 years. I guess it was like my experiences as a teen learning about great album by Stevie Wonder, Parlaiment and Curtis Mayfield. Keep on digging Emancipation88, the Paisley trip never ends.

Did I tell everyone recently to go listen to Free or did I tell everyone recently to go listen to Free? Go listen to Free. Listen to it on ONA, too. Ignore it at your peril.

About "the album has aged" - I just included DMSR in a mix, and man, what great responses did it get. People were all over asking what great music that was...

That song is just awesome, synth funk at its very best. And the rest of 1999 is cool as sh*t.

Lady Cab Driver - whoooeeeehh cool
