I've always wondered how the sound of the "Cloud" and "Symbol" guitars are common. I was watching the RAVE UN2 THE YEAR 2000 DVD, and I thought the Cloud sounded more light, and the Symbol sounded more angelic.

I've always wanted to try the Cloud, but I think I like the Tele's sound the best (assuming he did use that on the Purple Rain album).

Now you've got to add the blue Strat to the list, too. I also like the one he plays on "Strollin" on the Vegas DVD. It's something like a George Benson Ibanez or perhaps a Gibson.

The 1 thing I don't like about the Strat is the whammy bar. Prince always made wild sounds without it so why resort 2 it now? I looked at it like a loss of guitar skills.

That's odd that adding a new skill would look like a loss of skill. Actually I play a Strat with the whammy taken out!

Why do people call it a whammy bar and not a tremelo?

That's how I took it when I 1st saw it, like a help bar instead of a whammy bar. I was like "what the hell does he have that 4?". I love his guitar playing all the way and admired the fact that it was all done without that bar that a lot of the players that always makes the top of the "best guitar players" list have used at 1 point or another. 2 me he just doesn't need it.

I could be mistaken, but I believe tremelo actually refers to volume changes--fast, similar to vibrato, but not the pitch changes of vibrato which is what a whammy bar does. So people have mistakenly called it a tremelo for a long time.

And a "whammy bar" is just slang which caught on.

Well the fact that it's received head by Prince so many times, I think it would have a hefty pricetag. smile

My all-time favorite is the peach Cloud. The darker blue Cloud comes in second. The black Batman Cloud is pretty damn cool too...

The Symbol guitar does nothing for me.

Generally, the Cloud and the Symbol guitars have the same pickups and hardware, and most likely are constructed of the same woods. The exception to this rule is the Habibi Symbol that has tremolo bar

The "Symbol" guitar is a little bit too big in size, that's all I can say about it. I never liked the Model C Guitar he used in the Lovesexy/Graffiti Bridge eras. The C Guitar just looked ugly.

Do any of you know what the swirl on the bottom of the "cloud" guitar is?
