Buy the 1999 Album, I'm Sorry.

Yes, I didn't pay enough attention to this album and still didn't up until last month. Even though I had bought this album back in 2003, listen to it once didn't think much of it, Listen to it a second time and sided with Mrsquiggle and thought that the album was too long (some of the tracks I think are still over done) and definitely overrated. Well friends time has change and now Post an official apology here on the Org. The album is Masterpiece and is one of my favourite albums. So the next step is yours. Forgive me? biggrin

I've lost count of how many times I've listened to the "1999" album, and yet it still leaves me cold. Sure, there are some good tracks, but most of them go on for waaaaay too long. Strange that I feel this way, seeing as it was the tracks "1999", "Little Red Corvette" and then Purple Rain's "When Doves Cry" that got me into Prince in the first place, so the album is definitely from around my era.

Too long for me, always have to skip some tunes.
I love 1999 and Lady Cab Driver and International lover is funny
Never liked Little Red Corvette at all.
I think a tighter album would have been better

Little Red Corvette is really mainstream and boring. Automatic is too long and I´ve heard 1999 a little bit too often since 1982. In the 80s the album was really big and innovativ, now it´s just good. (Lady Cab Driver is still great!)

Maybe if it was a Japanese compilation called 1999: The 12" Mixes with all the bizarrely overlong versions of songs with sensible lengths, I'd like it.

wouldn't it make more sense to call it the 7" mixes, since they'd all be shortened?

no, what I'm saying is that all the songs on 1999, unedited, would make great 12" mixes. the album versions should've been much shorter.

fmarco,

U piss me off!

1st off, u don't listen to a song and judge it by whether its funny. If u do, then u should check a movie or shit.

2nd, what the hell are u doing, timing the album? A Album isn't a book. It isn't a lecture. It isn't a play.

ITS AN ALBUM.

And that doesn't fucking matter, because nobody should judge art on its length.Good God!!!

Hmmmmm..or WHAT!!!!
1999 is a landmark acheivment on several levels.
It fused pop, funk and rock to a higher degree then what had been done before. This is the album Rick James always wanted to make. It helped pave the way for industrial, techno and crossover pop. In many ways 1999 legitimized the use of drum machines and synthesizes on a "serious"album. Prince was on the very cutting edge back then in his drum machine use and if you listen to other albums at that time that used the Linn drum machine they sound hollow and tinny. The drum machines on 1999 are full and enveloping. The extended songs were a portend to prince's innovative 12' releases that would come in the mid-80s where instead of simply looping sequences prince extended the concept of the songs. Additionally, artists such as Trent Reznor have pointed to prince's amazing ability to create tenstion between instruments as a mostly one man band on this album as being hugely influential.
And, as Alan Leeds has pointed out, it gave prince the keys to open the doors for Purple Rain..
The songs on 1999 were sexed up for sure but there was a keenly intelligent psycho analysis going on underneath the obvious innuendo. Really brilliant stuff if you pay close attention.
Besides all that it has some ridiculously great songs.
I've seen people slap LRC. I know we've heard that song a million times, but come on. It's one of the great, rock sex metaphors in music history. A masterpiece of pop.
And 1999, please guys, this song is big, bold and brilliant. Again don't mistake hearing a song a billion times for and becoming bored or for lack of quality. Keep in mind it's been over 20 years since this thing came out. To me it still sounds fresh in many ways. Certainly, it has aged- but it has aged like a great wine...

23 years too late. You should have seen the live 1999 tour concert. Get a video if you can and then you can really appreciate how great this is.

there was no disrespect, it just took some time for it to catch on with some
I didn't read any posts that dissed the album in any way neutral

C'mon dude. If an album is great when it comes out it's always great. 22 years have passed, but that doesn't mean it's not great, just some age on it now.

Automatic is one of Princes 'defining' tracks. It incorporates all the nice elements he used during the period 1978 - 1982 and comes up with some hypnotic electrofunk that not also is very enjoyable to listen to, i think it influences a lot of the black (R&B, funk)-music released during the early and mid-eighties.

One minor point: i could without the sounds of women-moaning, but apart from that, a genious track, a gem to 'loose yourselve' into on the dancefloor wink
