Prettyman is a classic song

I love this song. This shoulda been a major hit. I think it's one of his better recent works. The horns kinda lame it out, but it's great nonetheless. Thoughts?

Well, funk isn't going to produce a "major hit" without a total cultural shift at this point. It couldn't 5 or 6 years ago either. But I agree about how great it is. It didn't help matters that it was buried as a secret track on the end of a far from hit album. The cover of "Everyday is a Winding Road" could have been scrapped to make room for it.

Great song, I agree! It is kind of cool that it was a hidden track on the "Rave" album, but maybe it would have been a bigger hit if it hadn't been...who knows....

It's a classic, alright. Far better than anything on the "Black Album" and you know it's true.

I like the song too. You get to see the playful side of Prince. I like most of the song on the CD.

I like it as a hidden track.

Without being a surprise, I don't think it would have made as big of an impression.

So much of its charm comes from being a joke and a secret.

Puh-leeze!! Now you've taken it TOO far. Better than anything on The Black Album??!! The men in white coats will be coming for you soon. smile I don't even care for "Prettyman" by itself, but when compared to true funk like stuff on the BA, there just is NO comparison!! The "Prettyman" turns to ugly REALLY soon!!

Prettyman is awesome. I love when P shows his humourous side.

It's a shame that Rave has some good-great invididual songs, yet kinda sucks as an actual album.

That's because someone dared to take a swipe at that "glorious" 1980-1988 era. The truth is, Prince has done a lot of hot stuff since then that sometimes eclipses the material from that era. Case in point----The Undertaker eats up any Prince guitar performance (on wax) that had come before.

That's a more realistic statement, and actually one i'd agree with. Kind of makes your 'glory years' statement moot though.

PrettyMan is a cheap JB knock-off. Totally devoid of originality, unlike the Black Album which is just brimming with ideas.

I agree and disagree. While "Pretty Man" is very derivative, I can't help but like it better than most everything on the Black Album, barring perhaps "Rock Hard in a Funky Place". The Black Album is probably my least fav Prince album though.

Sorry mate, but "the Black Album" is definitely not true funk. It's something else, but it's far from being true funk. "Pretyman"... well, be prejudiced or not, is far closer to "true funk" than most anything Prince did in the 80s. And the "Rave"-album contains quite a few tracks that had they been on his 80s albums people like you would be all "true funk" over them. It's all about perspective people, let it be an open one - like staring at the horizon - not a blocked one - like staring at the wall, or the black cover of the jewelcase release of the black album you got instead of the real original.

Hey let's not start trippin'. Sure prettyman is a funny song but it surely doesn't surpass the genius of the Black Album.

The "genius" that was left unreleased, let's face it, because it was quite substandard compared to his output from the previous years. "Dead On It" was just as embarrassing now as it was first when Prince was still playing it back straight out of the preamps of his console. Sure, "The Black Album" might be cooler than anything Prince put out in the 90s or maybe anything he put out after making it, I just detest that people associate "coolness" so outrightly with plain silly childishness.

Prettyman is a minor Prince song, fun to listen to but very traditional. It's nowhere as good as The Black Album, and I'm not saying this because it's 80's stuff. The Black Album will forever be the black sheep of Prince's catalog -- it was a brilliant blast of darkness that Prince may have tried to suppress, but that retains its place.

I love Prettyman - best song on the Rave album.

regardless, Prettyman IS a JB knock-off, unoriginal in it's structure, now you're going to tell me it has more true "funk" (whick I define a a rubbery push and pull music characteristic akin to a lopsided wheel chugging down a track) than cuts off of the Black Album? Just the monsterous loop noise in Le Grind is AS funky. now add the bass line and the electronic drums... wait what about the low synth bass hook in Rockhard? These details are so original, and so funky.

now I do love Prettyman. But it is more novelty than originality, although its mix is very Prince.
