I didn't say "funky", I said "funk". Yeah, sure - many of the cuts on "The Black Album" probably have a more infectuous groove than "Prettyman" does varying from listener to listener. However, whenever an expression such as "true" is used in conjunction with a musical genre, especially in a denotative sense (as in calling something a bit more left-of-the-field "TR000" or whatever) the alarm bells should be already ringing. | |

In my opinion, when people are listening to the radio and hear Prince doing some track in the JB-vain, they think, hey, this sounds quite funky, but they will never feel dared to find out who they were listening to, let alone 'buy it'.
I mean, i really think Prince makes the most impact with funk tracks that are original, have something 'special', some sparkle that makes you think: Hey, this is some original, funky track, lets find out who it is. nothing before Black ALbum was better in my opinion, and, nothing since, it is still my favorite prince album. I only really took notice of prince as an artist as opposed to a pop star, and was inspired to start producing music and sound effects after I heard the BLack ALbum. It remains the most cohesive and solid song sequence he has put out, and Bob George alone creatively strips away other stuff he's done (He is painting a bare bones focussed narrative, in the voice of another character, and manages to self deprecate all over himself). It is simply sick in a good way. As a concept with its simple peach and black fonts with no name, no artist mentioned... it is simply brilliant and deep. sometimes the best art comes out of negative emotions.This was when we had "Like A Prayer" or "Bad" as to compare what the other superstars were doing. Prince was and is still a creative force that makes me drop my jaw. and I really think the Black ALbum is a peak so far.
