is Princes Dirty Mind album more daring in 1980 than an ordinary member of society who was openly practising transvestitism in the same year?

not at all. I like Dirty Mind, I just think it doesn't need to be analyzed. it's good. any "personal" interpretation of the work is just that..."personal" and doesn't neccessarily refelct the work itself.

as if your commentary here isn't personal? every and any work of art, created by and with any medium, is subject to criticism and one's personal thoughts on said work. you can't stop that. saying you just like the album for its music warrants just as much as saying what you like/don't like about it or how you feel about it.

my main gripe is with the defense that if you don't like it you just don't get it. there's nothing to get. of all of Prince's work, this is one of the least deep in meaning.

where did i say that here? the "you get it" thing i said (i'm thinkin you're referrin to that) i didn't mean on this album alone, nor did i mean it in that context. read things more closely before you reply.

that is because I wasn't referring to you with that comment. I was commenting on things that were said in the entire thread, not just your review. if you noticed, I didn't quote you one bit in my original post, so your beef is with your own supposition, not with anything I said. I think you have taken my posts a little too personal.

sure, everything said is from a personal point of view. the difference is that you can either portray that as what you "think" of the work, which you didn't, or what the work "actually" is, which is what you did.

that's because that's what this review project originally entailed; how you feel about the album that you choose to review, as well as what it is. we're not doing this for a grade. so, you've wasted your time here on my thread tryin to tell me which way is up. this is my review, not yours.

Everyone who doesn't see this album as ground breaking is obviously someone who lived in the post-Dirty Mind world. I first heard it in 1983, and I'll tell ya now, it WAS mind-blowing. Sure, Prince has topped himself since, and a zillion acts have copied it, but you have to put it in context for the time period.

My twocents...

I tell ya, I've said this time and time again. When someone listens to an album like DM well after it's release, it's a bit daunting for them to find it groundbreaking when so many copycats have come out with their version(s) well afterwards. It takes the in-your-face-do-it-like-I-wanna attitude away from it. Therefore, the newbie tends to miss the whole point.

Agreed. I liken it when I show someone a classic movie like Halloween. Its been ripped-off so much that the newbie thinks "what's the big deal", not realizing that this was what broke the new ground to begin with. Something that is pioneering is bound to be copied, time and again.
