Has anyone heard of Shuggie Otis, and...

did Prince sample/recreate a tune by him called 'Happy House'.

Shuggie sounds alot like Sly Stone and was around at about the same time as him. However he only made a couple of ablums and then disappeared.

Like Prince, he played all the instruments himself, and had that soul-funk-thang going on.

Shuggie Otis was pretty amazing at the time he recorded "inspiration Information"...after that, he blew. I saw him at th Fillmore last year, and it was SOOOO pathetic, it was sad. I believe the Chronicle said it best, he was "Noodling" on every instrument.

Absolutely THE worst performance I ever saw.

Shuggie's real cool. Lots of great musical ideas.

Kinda like Sly Stone without the hits and the bodyguards.
Prince with out the hits and the wacky behavior.

I am so glad to hear some other people give Shuggie some props! www.luakabop.com then look for 'artists' and Shuggie Otis.

I first read of him in Tower Records' Pulse Magazine and was very intrigued to buy 'Inspiration Information'.

That album is so incredible I have to remind myself every time I hear it what year it was recorded in! That brotha's experimenting and stuff was ahead of time. I've told alot of peeps about it.

I have put that album on for guests esp on a Sunday and said, 'aye, while ya'll are hear, sit back, relax and listen to this man's stuff! Everyone is blown away like, 'who is this again?!' lol.

The album cover even looks like Prince's debut - same pose! And Shuggie is older then Prince-his dad was a jazz musician too. I know Shuggie has been thru some hard times but in another dimension who knows how far he woulda blown up and been known to the world?!

I saw Shuggie on Conan O' Brian when he did Strawberry Letter 23. He wrote and recorded that tune before Brothers Johnson performed it. Check the website for the history of that song.

Chaz, woooorrrrd? His performance was bad? wow. did he look like he was on something that nite, or he just wasnt in his zone?

peace!

Vocally Shuggie sounded nothing like Sly. Shuggie is still around.
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.
