The song 7 is from the Book of Revelation (in the Bible). Revelation 21:2 The Holy City, new Jerusalem. 21:18 the city was pure gold. 21:21 the streets of the city was pure gold. 22:1 the river water of life. 1:16 In his right hand seven stars. 4:5 there were seven lamps. Watch the 7 video. Look at the Love Symbol CD cover its all from Revelation.

So AWESOME!!!! Praise the Lord!!! wink

One of his best.

As I have said many times before, I never really liked the Symbol album EXCEPT for this and ...And God Created Woman.

I consider it one of his last GREAT singles. Instantly cool and orginal and typically Prince sounding as well. I always thought he was talking about the 7 deadly sins. That explanation above about Revelations sounds right.

The guy talking about 7 being about anal leakage...wtf?

Hey Pagey, I;m feeling that pic that you have for your avator. Where can I find it larger?

Is it in the gallery? If so, gimmie a link.

I think quite simply because it is to a certain extent self-indulgent both musically and lyrically. Lyrically, Along with the song's story whereby Prince and his lover become an entity in the knowledge that 'the 7' will die. If you also read the inner sleeve lyrics for o(+> you will see the words 'Revelation' and 'The Book'-next to the lyrics, the words do indeed correspond to some of the text of the Book of Revelations in the Bible. ('7', of course, is a signifying, symbolical number in many cultures.) Juxtapose '7' with say the lyrical, pop charm of say 'Raspberry and Beret' and the nursery-rhyme like melody of 'When Doves Cry', you can see why the everyday music listener does not recognise it as a classic.

my opinion, it is a great song, but, it is one of the very few P songs that tends to get old if u play it too much.

Funny coincidence

Yesterday I was introduced to a really cool Middle Eastern Bar in London's West End frequented by young Arabs. I was listening to the music that was playing over the sound system, which made me think of this very song. I was thinking how ground breaking this song was - the fusion of funk and soul with Arabic influence. The music playing over the sound system, the attitude of the young people in there, the fusion of Arabic culture, funk and soul music, and street culture suddenly made the future look less bleak. I was in awe - just as I am over the lyrics of the song seven. In my mind the best track on the Symbol album.

The real classic is the "acoustic" version that's on the maxi single.

If you want to appreciate "7" focus on the vocal melody. This, to me, is what makes the song. It's such a weird melody coupled wih some slightly dissonant harmonies and sounds giving it the surreal feeling that backs the biblical reference. I think the coolest part is when the high vocals come in and go "1,2,3,4,5,6,7" oh and the drawn out vocals when the music stops and then the snare hits. That's some sweet stuff. Totally a unique song, and isn't that what makes Prince....well Prince!

Actually, when I heard the morning papers for the first time, I was spell bound by the song.

Becuase once again, Prince wrote a song that didn't sound like any of his previous material--just like 7 and 3 Chains of Gold.

It was wierd when I listenned the Morning Papers though becuase I heard the lyrics and said, "Is he trying to say that he's seeing an underaged girl and the media won't leave him alone about it?"

the I realized--Hell yeah, that's what he's saying. Shocking. And perfectly Prince. Ofcourse ad he got older, his women still didn't. He's like James Bond in that way.

The 0+> album is loaded with gems. We havent even gotten in to And GOD created woman, Damn U, Sexy MF, 2 ha 9's, and the incredibly funky My Name is Prince. This album hooked me to Prince. I was a fan until purchasing the TAPE. Thats right, tape. After listening to it for a solid month, I became hooked. This CD will always be in my top 5.
