Why all the dislike for Shelby J.? I came across some old org threads (from before I was posting here) and there seemed to be a real dislike for Shelby J. I don't get it. The woman has an amazing voice and she obviously was playing the role Prince wanted her to play in his band. From what I can tell she's never been anything but respectful of Prince and had great love for him (like a brother). She never sold her story to the tabloids or tried to cash in on her relationship with him. Is it just because people didn't like "clap your hands stomp your feet" chants? Seriously? http://prince.org/msg/12/349445 http://prince.org/msg/5/357022 http://prince.org/msg/5/362550 http://prince.org/msg/5/365218 http://prince.org/msg/5/415965 Paisley Park is in your heart

Just a couple things Shelby posted on FB last year. http://prince.org/msg/7/426100 Hey yal๐๐พ I've been quiet cuz I needed Time. But on my flight home from Minneapolis while looking out at the clouds....this came to me and I had to write๐ Time 2 go..... As I look out my window seat Minneapolis flashbacks come to me, Rehearsals, parties, hangin & more... U let me Into your Heart & it's U I Adore. Though Ur gone from this Physical realm, Your Spirit Lingers On, So Funny, So Gifted, So Giving, So Strong. Thank u Prince for the Journey, the Love & the Lessons, U were more than my Partna', U were My Blessing๐ Sunday's service gave my heart a hug as U knew it would, I Feel a New Peace and that is Good. I will Honor U in death as I did In this Life, I'll Do NOTHING to tarnish that Beautiful Light. I dropped by Paisley.....it wasn't the same, But I found comfort in the mementos that bore your likeness & name. U were loved by SO many... Every Color, Every Creed, U touched their Souls and planted MANY Seeds. So Sleep well my Sweet Prince as I start a Chapter that is New, A lil scary, but I can hear ..."Wheels up Shel....We Got Work to Do" U chose ME for this ride, 2 be Right by YOUR side, My mentor...my Guide.... Can't wait 2 C U on the Other Side๐ค๐ We sang this together & now it REALLY rings TRUE, NOTHING, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING....Compares 2 U ๐ https://www.facebook.com/...c/?fref=nf Paisley Park is in your heart

I don't know much about Shelby J, but so far, I haven't heard anything disrespectfully said or done by her. It seemed as if she really respected Prince. That was a beautiful poem.

Also, when I actually skim those threads, there seem to be a lot more Shelby supporters than not.

But I CAN judge her input on Prince's songs and performances and I don't like her involvement in either. A very big factor in that is her near constant yelling of "put your hands up" and her other "catchphrases". She was unnecessary. The band are there, playing some really cool, funky grooves, then she comes along and ruins it with her annoying voice.

Though this is the same man who also had Tony M in a similar role before so make of that what you will. Maybe he felt her input was a necessary part of the show? Maybe he liked it? Or maybe he just got on with her on a personal level and that clouded his judgement on what she was bringing to the table. Who knows? The reason for her appearances at his shows are not important though. What's important, and relevant, to what you asked is the reason for many fans dislike of her. I can't speak for everyone but for me, I felt she was an unnecessary part of the show that actually detracted from the overall experience with her annoying chanting.

I wasn't mad at her, I was mad at Prince for having her sing so much. He barely let Rosie do shit and she was much better.
He loved women so much he thought they should sing his songs. He really did hate men. All you others say Hell Yea!!

I don't why. She seems like sweet person and not about the drama and negativity. Prince seem to adore her and connect with her.

It was not about her I agree. It was more so Prince fault for letting her sing too much on tour. Especially on the Indigo Nights disc. Was a little much. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

Wow, didn't realize people had an issue with her. She seems like a lovely person and can sing like nobody's business. I was just admiring her, Liv, and Elisa singing in the first Montreux 2013 show earlier today. Welcome to "the org", Mumioโฆthey can have you, but I'll have your love in the end

It was around the time of the official tribute concert. Shelby happened to be at Paisley the day they did the tour. When they came to the part with the super bowl video Shelby was there talking about how this was her first big gig with Prince. Someone started getting very emotional. Shelby went over and put her arm around them to comfort them in that moment. I thought that was very touching. Paisley Park is in your heart

Prince fans, and I assume fans of any musician, will always be particular to what other musical elements add to their musical scene. I don't think people hated Shelby, they just had like or dislike on how her vocal expression meshed with their experience.
That goes for anything. No one has to love anything and everything an artist does of course.
A lot of that is just Org people poking fun in their way

That goes for anything. No one has to love anything and everything an artist does of course. That is why similar harsh comments & mockery are also made on other threads about Sheila E., Wendy & Lisa, Mayte, etc. It's unfortunate, but it is what it is. [Edited 1/11/17 15:22pm]

I like Shelby's voice a lot.I also like her performance she did with Prince on the George Lopez show. But I can see how some would get annoyed at her by constant "clap your hands ,stomp your feet" chants. She's from North Carolina like I am.For some reason I think she's the sole reason why Prince took his "Welcome 2 America " tour to the Carolinas .If true im grateful to her for that
