Alan Leeds - refresh my memory

Please can someone explain to me when Mr. Leeds last worked with Prince & does anyone know if they remained on friendly terms or saw each other again in later years?

Same for Susan Rogers too actually.

alan leeds claims no intimate knowledge of prince's private or business situation since he left in may 92'. he does have thorough information of both from 82-92.

++

susan rogers claims no intimate knowledge of prince's music since 86-87.

---

few people were in touch with prince after they left. according to dez, prince isn't the kind of person to just call or keep in touch. but it doesn't mean that there is bad blood. dez and chick were kept on the payroll for years after they left. alan leeds was paid through his illness even though wasn't at the office. i'm not sure when alan got sick though.

Thanks. I thought this but I was speaking to someone reading Toure's book & they keep going on like Alan is an authority on Prince. It's pissing me off. All these people who knew him way back I wonder if they realise he evolved over the years? Fucking irritating!

Keep in mind that Susan Rogers was still around when he made The Black Album and took the ecstacy pill. She left after that, which was a year (or a year and half) after 1986.

.

Alan Leeds mentioned the last time they spoke, and as far as I recall it was after 1992. But I don´t have the exact date. And remember he wrote the liner notes for The Hits/The B-Sides. And that was released in 1993.

some of this is due to the fact that most people want to only focus on the PR-SOTT period. and both alan and susan WOULD be "authorities" on that period. but yes fucking irratating at times.

You think Alan Leeds (who was Prince's right hand man for 10 years) isn't an authority on Prince? Of course Prince evolved over the years, but Alan has a lot of insight into Prince's history, approach to his work, personality, etc. Wish Alan would write the book that he talked about doing a few years ago.

Is there one person that's an authority on 80s, 90s, 00s (and beyond) Prince? I'm hoping when it comes to the music there's not just one person overseeing it all. Bring in those who were involved with a specific era. I don't want Susan Rogers overseeing recent stuff and I don't want Trevor Guy overseeing stuff from the early 80s.

I believe he remained on friendly terms with Alan over the years.
Alan was talking to Prince around the time the Family was getting back together.
They wanted to do a song or 2 with Prince.

true.

I'm in my 40s so, for me still I want everything I can get from 1977-1989 before I die or just don't care anymore (reason I cannot start over again with Star Wars JJ Abrams messed me up)

I wouldn't mind hearing some later unreleased stuff maybe from the Rainbow Children period, the Undertaker and some other periods.

What's the point you were trying to make? Generally when Alan is interviewed he talks about things he was privy to, such as Prince's personality and approach to his work. I find what he has to say very informative.

.

Your thread started off innocently asking if Alan and Prince kept in touch. What is that you're going on about?

.

Alan is a straight-shooter. He talks about his observations and experience with Prince. I have even noted him say before in an interview something to the effect of "I can't speak to that as that was after I left Prince." Seems pretty straightforward to me.

I tihnk he is telling it as it was when he was there and the relationship he had with Prince.
Why does that irritate you?

The point was the person I spoke to who is quite young and only getting into Prince assumed that Alan was still Prince's manager because Toure's book came out in 2013. It's annoying to me because I don't like how so many fixate on 1 time period when it comes to Prince - a man who had his last album come out at the end of 2015 & was still performing until he passed.

That is what I'm "going on about" I hope my response is satisfying enough for you. I'm sorry you had such trouble hearing something negative about someone you so clearly love.

No not about him telling it like it is or being a straight shooter. I mean how it's framed like "Prince is this, Prince is that" in a book that came out in 2013 (I think).

It irritates me because I found it irritating.

You are not the only one who find Alan irritating. When he said he introduced Prince to jazz I was floored Prince's dad was a jazz musician so why would he need Alan or Eric to introduce him to anything? Alan tries to take too much credit for a guy that was only around for 10 years.

Just because John Nelson was a jazz musician doesn't mean he exposed Prince to jazz musicians and the genre

From the way Prince's back in forth life story goes, it doesn't seem that much of that interaction was going on.

-- From what people are saying Prince talked about sitting at the piano with his Dad learning to play piano as a child. Andre Cymone said in a interview that Prince's dad had magic in his hands as a piano player and both of them learned a lot from him. I would not be surprised if music was the only thing that discussed.

You could Google when he managed him, but you appear to have wanted to start a thread just to say you are irritated. is that pretty much the answer?

Not saying you, but in general it seems like some folks take issue with damn near anyone who actually knew and worked with Prince who has something to say that doesn't jibe with their own preferred "Prince narrative."

He's telling it as he remembers,or chooses to remember it. That's not necessarily as it actually was. Leeds is not objective.

What is with you? Do you not have the albilty to think outside of the box? If something is not spelled out for you. You just can't figure it out?

I said some people are liars and have actually been caught lying. I never said all and some fans are tired of it and have issues for that reason. The active word would be SOME.

I am the one thinking outside of the box, if the truth must be told.

.

Listen: the operative word in MY post was "SOME folks" while the operative word in YOUR post was "SOME associates."

.

Please think about the difference. We're both using the word "some" but we've applied it in different ways.

.

Speaking of spelling things out, that's what I've been trying to do because you keep misinterpreting what I say.

.

I was pointing out that "some people think" this way or that way about a particular topic. You stated what I said was not true (which it is), and went on to say that "People have issues with some associates" -- do you really not see the distinction?

We could be on the "some all day" Different people have opinions about associates based on actual lies they have told. These people (fans) are not wrong for having these opinions since they are based on facts. Yes, they are going to take issue with other fans who don't know the facts of the situation. This is an open message board. No one has to explain to you why Alan Leeds has been a dick head about a lot of Prince topics in the last few years. I really hope he feels bad for bashing someone for their behavior from 30 fucking years ago. He must have felt like a moron when Van Jones and others talked about all the great things Prince had been doing behind the scenes for the last thirty years. He was talking out of his ass about stuff from 30 years ago. At some point he should have let it go and I hope he does now.
