Jill Jones blog: The Petit Prince and his Web Sheriff http://blog.myspace.com/i...=361127170
Sunday, February 24, 2008 The Petit Prince & his Web Sheriff!! Current mood: disappointed Category: Music It has come to my attention that the link to the Mia Bocca Video no longer works on my site. This is due to Prince's NPG Records copyright infringement whatever. I am saddened by this particularly as this song was jointly worked on. As I recall calling various Italian restaurants to get the direct translations for what we wanted to say. That being said, we ended up getting several busboys I think who were Mexican and well Italian and Mexican...not the same. :-)LOL I was constantly corrected in Italy about my Bad Italian. (Only in fun tho') Personality, Ego and the Essence of a man. Which one is he? Being in the world and not of it, is difficult. All I can say at the moment is, "He is like a man using a candle to look for the sun" Jalal ad-Din Rumi quote XO With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! And if, then I hope that I would then have wen in my environment who joins me in the A....

I sense an onslaught a comin'!
Van Hunt v.2 "Ungrateful b***h!" "He" wrote the songs, "He" can do what he wants with them, blah, blah blah. Whenever someone from the Prince camp humanizes him, they always get thrown under the bus for it. Poor Jill. Can't even showcase her past. Well, anyone can create a youtube/myspace/dailymotion, etc. account and choose unsuspecting keywords. Reload & repost, Jill. Where there's a Jill, there's a way. [Edited 2/24/08 22:39pm]

[Edited 2/24/08 22:39pm] Co-sign this. Of all of the associated artists Jill is one of the few who has a real persona that translates to the record/video. I find this news more dissapointing than chasing fans (for supposed copyright infringement) for some reason. Prince, be a man. Give a girl a break.

points out how silly prince is...
and how lacking a man he can be as well... Space for sale...

Wow.
Jill is half Italian (from her father), and she couldn't figure out how 2 say "my mouth" in Italiano? "He's a musician's musician..."

I'm sure this has been discussed many times, but can someone tell me how Prince and Jill Jones went their separate ways? Obviously, their personal/business relationship didn't end on a positive note.
I wish Prince would lighten up with removing all his stuff from the web. I love seeing rare clips/hearing rare tracks on sites like youtube, myspace and dailymotion.

pettiness has just achieved a new low.
jill jones has contributed to some of the most memorable prince projects, this kind of control makes no sense. this thread needs to stay up a while

when i came back into the Prince fold in 2004, Musicology just ended successfully, Housequake and Princefam had their video section and the NPGMC was up and running, things were good (except for the NPGMC forum..ugh!). Somehow, somehwere, for some reason, something went sour starting 2006 to really bad Janaury 2008.
i support his fight, its his stuff and frankly, bootleggers made a killin of musicology, those concerts were for sale everywhere, illegally however, things are getting really..weird...and confusing...even for a fam like me. i don't really care, does not impact my life, all i care about is when is the next live show.....but...wow. [Edited 2/25/08 11:37am]

Would you also support his fight if he said to you that he wanted royalties from you for playing "his" songs in your mp3 player or if he wanted money from people for watching his music videos on television?
That's why fair usage laws exist. Intellectual property is not solely that of the creator once it is released. As a matter of fact, Prince is not the "sole creator" of a lot of his songs as he has used many musicians on all of his records. There isn't one commercially released Prince record that is "only Prince". Do those artists have say-so as to whether or not people hear the songs/watch the videos they participated in? I think not. Bootleggers have made a killing off ALL artists, not just Prince so he isn't exclusive in any way when it comes to that however bootleggers couldn't make a killing if CDs were priced better in the first place, but that's another topic. Jill sang her songs and she should have the right to post HER video since its HER image that's in them and not Prince. Lil' dude is trippin'. I'm surprised the NPG Music Cult members haven't come here to blast Jill yet.

I assume that if you create a song and sell it you expect it to be purchased. If he came after me personally, i'd be pissed, but if I knew I downloaded the song illegally in the first place then what would be my argument? or if he wanted money from people for watching his music videos on television?
Has something changed? I thought all networks are required to obtain permission or a license to show any work of art. I'm totally not an expert, however I thought that TV is the one place where they obtain permission. I think not. . Others may have shared in the creation however who is lawfully the copyright holder of the song? Bootleggers have made a killing off ALL artists, not just Prince so he isn't exclusive in any way when it comes to that however bootleggers couldn't make a killing if CDs were priced better in the first place, but that's another topic..
I understand that but we are talking about Prince which is why I used Musicology as an example. Even if he would have sold it officially and priced it well, other shows would be for sale and you could still get it for free somewhere. Jill sang her songs and she should have the right to post HER video since its HER image that's in them and not Prince. Lil' dude is trippin'.
I'm surprised the NPG Music Cult members haven't come here to blast Jill yet. [/color] I agree. Like I said, somehow starting July 2006, something changed, before that everything seemed okay.

Wonder505, I see that you misunderstood some of my post.
Rather than clarify, I'll stay on topic. In all fairness, Jill should be able to post her video if she chooses. Do you agree? Yes or no?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
If it was/is HER video then no one could stop her from posting it, obviously it is a video with Jill in it, but it does NOT belong to her.
If I wrote and produced a play(and copyrighted it), then had a video made of the actors performing it, and I copyrighted the video...they could not post the video without my permission. They could not perform the play without my permission. A lot of people have been looking the other way when laws such as these have been broken, don't fault Prince because he's choosing to enforce his rights now, even if he chose not to before. If Jill shares the copyright with him, she may have a cause for legal action. If she does not.... PaisleyRose was here

If someone wants to watch the Mia Bocca video or any Paisley Park artist how does that take any money from him? Hardly any of those artists made any money any way, so if he is so about the music, seems like he'd want it heard in any fashion. To me it's all about his control issue. He's not going to be happy until the few hardcore fans that buy his albums get tired of being told how they can enjoy his music. Seems like his philosophy on Religion and the black and white stance he now takes on it has carried over to his music now, my way, or no way. That's really sad.

Completely different from the V. Hunt brouhaha. My sympathies are with Jill on this one. He may well be the copyright holder but why he'd choose to enforce it against a former friend and collaborator is beyond me. I guess I'm a totally different type of person. I'm so grateful for the blessings in my life that I don't sweat the petty stuff too much...I try to choose my battles wisely. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

I think she should fight him on this because P does not own the rights to this video. The company, channel, or TV show on which she performed on does. She may be violating THEIR copyright rights unless there was an agreement for the performer to use the footage for their own self promotion. Besides, wouldn't her appearance on the show in the first place be de facto permission from whomever wrote it to record and air the performance of the song??? This is all so irrational and self-defeating and makes NO sense on P's part.
For example, Prince does not own the Superbowl performance, the NFL does and they can re-air the performance as they choose to. Prince may be able to use that footage only IF he and the NFL had an agreement that allowed him to do so. Furthermore, he didn't ask the Foo Fighters, Ike Turner, or Bob Dylan for permission to perform their songs on the Superbowl. Lil hypocrite! (but he's still my boo ) [Edited 2/25/08 16:37pm]

"Personality, Ego and the Essence of a man. Which one is he? Being in the world and not of it, is difficult. "
This summarizes the Prince experience since 1982 when "he finally made it."

His relationship with his online fan base is beyond atrocious and has been for 12 years. It's so bad now that he shakes down the "White Fox" with his little Web Sheriff. If that doesn't work, he'll send the lawyers. Too sad to be believed. In the end, what does it matter? I'm not buying anything Prince produces ever again. It's a download ball. I have other things to spend my money on. Prince can play God with his lawyers until his money dries up and he's rotting alone in Paisley Park... I remember a questionare Prince responded to on his Emancipation website. One of the questions was whether or not he would work with Foo Fighters, since Dave Grohl said he was a fan and would like to collaborate. Prince response was "...who would own the master..". He hates the industry so much, but the businessman in him can't help but run his friends over. But also, I think Jill Jones could give a better account of herself and her contribution to the song, than just calling around asking for the proper Italian. More for her sake since she's taking her grievance to the public.
