IMO, there's no truth in this. Prince collaborates with special artist, i.e Stevie Wonder, Amy Winehouse (which will happen soon if not already), Gwen Stefani...just to name a few. Prince doesn't even take the stage with others unless they're complimenting his talent. He takes the utmost pride in his musical talent and I truly admire him for this. Why do you think he wanted so badly to collaborate with Miles?

THAT's right I now remember reading somewhere that Paul bought a huge a catalog of a variety of songs years ago including Happy Birthday. He's also the one that told Michael Jackson to do the same thing only to get pissed when MJ bought the Beatles catalog. LOL! lol

I completely understand coming after 3rd parties that are trying to use and/or profit from his music, but Jill sang, recorded, and contributed to the creation of this song. Again, he does not own the video of the performance so what grounds does he have to stand on. I'm by no means a Jill Jones fan but does the performer have no rights in this?

Everyone knows that Prince wrote most if not all of the Time's songs. Morris has made a very good living singing the same old songs for the last 20 years. What would ya'll say if P all of sudden said he couldn't sing those songs anymore. Or Sheila for that matter. Why is that any different from what he's doing to Jill??? confused

that's extreme and that is not what is happening. I don't think Prince is telling anyone that they can't sing the songs they were apart of. The issue is that he does not like Youtube or myspace or anything of the like, and Jill and other associated artists does, so they need to contact each other and come to some sort of agreement. I know that sounds pretty silly because all prince have to do is simply not care especially if its their songs too. but it is what it is.

By the way, Morris Day has a clip from the Musicology show on his official website and Prince has not touched that. Not sure if that means anything but thought I'd throw that out there.

I do feel for the associated artist though, if they want to share their songs that Prince had a hand in they should be able to.

I was referring to what another poster said, about Prince contemplating a collaboration with Foo Fighters but being too preoccupied with "who will own the master recording".This is why he doesn't do alot of collaborations, imo. He's too concerned about the money/control aspect of it,which is unfortunate. His greed and paranoid attitude prevents alot of interesting collaborations from occuring.

I disagree...he is not "collaborating" with them, they are performing together live and the performances are not officially released. Exception--he played guitar on Stevie's 'What the Fuss' so I do wonder how that worked. My guess is his did it as a favor to one of his idols. Prince seems to be a prick to those he thinks he can boss/push around but I bet he's not going act like an asshole to someone like Stevie; can you imagine if he was and that got out? You don't disrespect a legend. no no no!

And on the flip side, when people like Gwen guest on Prince's songs, I bet they do it however he wants because they are flattered/honored to work with him. (P. can play the 'don't disrespect a legend' card, too.)

Good questions...I was just wondering if he/Websheriff would do the same thing to Sheila if she posted the Koo Koo video (for example) on her website?

I'm sure this has been discussed many times, but can someone tell me how Prince and Jill Jones went their separate ways? Obviously, their personal/business relationship didn't end on a positive note.

In 1987,after many years of delays,Jill Jones' debut album was finally released on Paisley Park Records. The album didn't do very well and in 1988,Jill went into the studio with another producer and recorded an album's worth of demos. She was trying to define herself, musically, and probably didn't want to be known as "just another Prince girl".Unfortunately,Prince had other ideas. In 1990,he began preparing her second album.Songs recorded during this period include "My Baby Knows How To Love Me","Flesh and Blood" and "Boom Boom (Can't You Feel The Beat Of My Heart",which was planned as the first single.A video was shot,as well.

Jill didn't like these new songs and she didn't like the direction that Prince was trying to take her in.The two were having alot of heated arguments and disagreements. The last straw came when Prince sent Jill the script for 'Graffiti Bridge'.He had promised her a bigger part but when she was reading the final script on a plane to Minneapolis, she angrily ripped it up,much to the surprise of the other passengers lol

By the end of 1990,it was evident that Prince and Jill had drifted apart. She wanted to move on and take her career forward but he wouldn't let her out of her contract. Thus, she was unable to sign a new record label and release new music for seven years.By 1995,she was singing backup for the disco band Chic. She probably feels that Prince sabotaged her career.

Yeah, it's called control. Where Jill made her mistake was trusting in P that he would turn around and do her right. As well as Jill could sing and as FINE as Jill is. She's STIL fine! Take a look at any of the other women that was hooked to P, any of them...and then look at Jill. Anyway, there is no way in hell P shouldn't have gave Jill some killer material and put out an album by her in 84. Hell, in 83 is when her album should have came out. After 1999, but before P's and everybody else's albums were hitting in 84. She could have avoided the mass releasings. P had the material, that wasn't the issue. Even if Warners wanted to wait in 84 to capitalize on the film, still cool. Jill would have sold through the roof. Definately out selling Apples. Look at how P did Sheila with her first album? It was obvious that P gave a shit about Sheila and her album doing well. P knew what it was going to take for Sheila's album to blow up...Hit material. The Glam Life was a no brainer. Pure hit. And the album as a whole was good. And this from a woman who can't sing. Wasn't the case in Jill's department. At that time, Jill CLEARLY was the most talented singer in P's camp. And had the perfect image. She was very well known from the 1999 album video's. 1999, Automatic, u know. And her fantastic vocals on the 1999 album. besides P, she was the star of that album. No way in hell her album from 83, 84 wouldn't have been huge. The girl had the complete package: Great vocals, great looks and charisma to boot. Like P, she was perfect for the 80's. When Jill saw that P was holding out on her, timing wise , she should have bounced then. Went to a cat like Nile Rodgers who was hot as fuck as a producer in the 80's. He would have worked with her before u could say lemon cake.

But she kept believing in P. Talk about her part being cut in GB, same thing happened in PR. Even the director said Jill was good. Tell me then why was her part cut down to a whimpering girl? Ask P. Wendy had the most lines in the band put together. Totally dogged out the male members. And don't even talk about poor Mark. The cat couldn't even get a mumble or a grunt. Nothing. Totally mute. Was it cuz Mark was....Anyway, that's a whole different topic. My point is, if u in P's good graces, like Sheila was, then u straight. She kicked Bobby out to get Sheila's ass. And she was already a star. He didn't need a "white drummer" anymore.

Add to all this the time she had to spend fleshing out the Vanity/Apollonia 6 albums with her vocals - she must have been the second hardest working person in the Prince camp.

I don't think it has anything to do with being broke. It has to do with control.
You own the masters you have more control over future use of the music.

Just look at Ray Charles when he left Atlantic he went to ABC and he negoiatied to own all of the masters to his recordings. Think how great it was for him to control the use of that music in the movie "Ray"

He did not have to pay out as much to use the "ABC" recordings. Keep in mind that "Modern Songs in Country and Western was a hugh seller.

I can't understand why it was okay for Ray Charles to have control over his music and not Prince.

Some of you just do not see the big picture.

Yes, I am sure he was putting a gun to Jill's head. She was an adult and she made a bad choice hanging around him along as she did and she has to live with it.

I by no means think P is an angel but, some of these associates need to take reponsiblity for their actions. You do not see Sheile crying and complaining. It looks like she has moved on with her life.

speaking of "Mia Bocca"...can someone explain to me what this song is about? In the first verse,Jill makes it clear that she has a loyal lover and that she doesn't want to cheat on him. However, she meets a new guy who's got her going "koo koo" and she wants to do something with him.Could someone explain the chorus to me? Years ago,I used to think she was singing...

I love another

since "mia bocca" means "my mouth",I came up with my own naughty interpretation but I don't think it's correct lol what's Jill talking about??

Hell if I know? I always thought the song was whack anyways. But of course, Jill, who I've always loved, has the stone right to perform this song in any format. This sounds a little more than a bit personal to me. I think P was hip to that article Jill had about P and P was like "Bitch..." So here this is.

This thread seems to be divided into two.

One half pointing out that legally he has every right to control a video of his own creation - legally I have no doubt that he has the right to pull it from Jill's site.

The other half just basically saying that he's being a cock for making this stand.

What he is doing may well be legal but I question why he feel the need to follow his legal right to every minutae of his creation. Is this because he feel that if he lets the little stuff go everyone will walk over him?

Treating Jill in this fashion is small and petty, imo. Can he do what he is doing? Obviously. Should he be doing this?

He does not own the video we are discussing because he did not "create" it. She performed the song on a TV show, therefore, the TV show, channel, and/or producers own that video. Not Prince even if the song is his. Jill maybe violating the show's copyright but I don't see how Prince can demand the video be taken down. My point earlier is that he must have given some sort of consent in the first place for Jill to even appear on the show. So how does this violate P's rights??? That's been my question all along. hmmm

Add to all this the time she had to spend fleshing out the Vanity/Apollonia 6 albums with her vocals - she must have been the second hardest working person in the Prince camp.

disbelief

Yes, of course she should have moved on, I'm not arguing there. But people don't - especially where relationships are concerned. It's very easy to talk yourself into staying hoping that everything will turn around.

As to whether she's moved on, who knows. I suppose that she may just be shrugging her shoulders at this whole situation but thinks it's worthy of mentioning.

Yeah, what's up with that??? But these are two distinctly different situations. Prince paid to record the Musicology shows therefore he owns that footage and would be totally within his rights to come after Morris for showing the footage on his site. However, Jill, who was at the time a Paisley Park artist, performed on a TV show, obviously with P's knowledge. He don't own that footage and can't (legally) make her take it down, at least IMO.

In the same vein as this Jill situation, you can see The Time's recent Grammy performance all over the net. By the rationale P is using with Jill, he would be authorized to have it removed even though he doesn't own the video. The Grammy's Recording Academy does. So what then?

So how does this violate P's rights??? co - hmmm The whole situation is v. odd.
