So, I'm sitting here watching the Dallas Mavericks play the Chicago Bulls and they just showed the Mavericks dancers doing a routine to of all song's, Trust from the Batman soundtrack (on a side note, I remember doing a dance routine for drill team in high school to this song back in 89 and tons of dance teams STILL use it which is a testament to his genius). However, by P's twisted logic/rationale, or lack thereof, he should be going after Mark Cuban and EVERY other team owner that allows Kiss or Baby I'm a Star or any other Prince song to be played during a televised game. I'm sure the reason he doesn't do this is because he knows they have the financial resources to eat his lil ass up. And not in the good way. lol

I'm bored with Jill's blogs and grandstanding, about her relationship with Prince. Seems like she's always trying to play the victim. If she is legally entitled to post the video then Prince can't stop her. Lot's of people were on tv or involved artisticly with something that they don't have legal rights to redistribute or publicly display. Jill is no different.

Would you also support his fight if he said to you that he wanted royalties from you for playing "his" songs in your mp3 player or if he wanted money from people for watching his music videos on television?
That's why fair usage laws exist. Intellectual property is not solely that of the creator once it is released. As a matter of fact, Prince is not the "sole creator" of a lot of his songs as he has used many musicians on all of his records. There isn't one commercially released Prince record that is "only Prince". Do those artists have say-so as to whether or not people hear the songs/watch the videos they participated in? I think not.
Bootleggers have made a killing off ALL artists, not just Prince so he isn't exclusive in any way when it comes to that however bootleggers couldn't make a killing if CDs were priced better in the first place, but that's another topic.
Jill sang her songs and she should have the right to post HER video since its HER image that's in them and not Prince. Lil' dude is trippin'.

SCNDLS,

When they use Trust or Kiss or Baby, I'm a Star in a sports game, you can be pretty sure he is getting licensing fees from those plays. There is an agency that also monitors radio play and even jukeboxes and they gives the artists a cut off of plays. I'm not exactly sure how they do their monitoring, but either the sports team, the TV network or someone is paying a licensing fee just to be able to use the song...

On the opposite side of things, YouTube is not paying a licensing fee. They are in one way or another breaking a law/rule and not compensating the artist for their work. Whether or not this is proven in a court of law is a different story.

I support Prince so far in his actions to protect his copyrights even it may be the most unpopular side to take. He is right. It's not the "cool" way to go, but he is right.

And why does Jill have to take a perfectly legit argument and then throw in that Prince is "petit"? That little jab makes her sound like a bitter ex-lover and not an ex-business associate, although I assume she was both.

By the way, I was just thinking about all this YouTube stuff and filesharing of copywritten material...

The majority of people out there are nothing but a bunch of VULTURES.

Vultures in the sense that people steal all this music and believe they are entitled to it. Then when someone like Prince comes along they all get defensive.

Bunch of vultures.

An analogy would be like if a teacher in high school gave the students a bag of candy every day for 2 months and then died in a car accident. Then a new teacher replaced the old one and didn't give the students candy. Then the students bitched and complained and became problem students just because they weren't getting their free candy. They weren't supposed to get the candy in the first place. Stinking brats.

Bunch of vultures people are.

Animals.

Thanks for the extra info. This makes sense as far as when they play a song in an arena. However, having worked with dance teams before, we would select the songs we wanted to use in our choreography and not check with ownership or management. The only time we heard from the "suits" is if they didn't like a song or thought it was inappropriate. My niece was actually a Mavericks dancer a couple years ago, so I'll have to ask her about this. biggrin

The NFL, NBA and other sports companies have departments soley dedicated on licensing and clearances. I believe they pay a yearly fee to RIAA or another music licensing company and must submit reports on when they played the songs and for how long. I'm not sure how it works for the Internet though.

I don't think it DOES work for the internet. Not yet anyway. The internet is so new that copyright holders do not yet know how to react to these types of things. So, in that sense, Prince is a bit of pioneer, taking the first steps to protect artists' work on the internet.

All due respect to Jill Jones and her musical talent, but she represents the millions of small-minded thinking on this issue. Most people tend to be selfish and want their free candy, when they aren't entitled to it (legally) in the first place. Then they bitch and moan about it on blogs and myspace and at family gatherings and of course millions of other selfish, small-minded people are going to side with them on the issue of receiving their free candy. Then of course it becomes Prince against the world. I think people should open up their minds just a liiiittle bit more on this issue and see it for what it really is. Take themselves and what they want to get for free out of the equation for a second.

I'm not saying people are selfish on purpose. They just don't know any better because they can't comprehend it.

People also feel they are entitled to that $300 George Bush is giving to tax paying Americans.

1) Bush is an ass.

2) I'll take it if he's giving it.

3) The youtube stealers (for lack of better term) sound like people that will complain when their $300 comes late - "Where's my $300??!! I gots bills ta pay!" Honey, you are lucky you are getting it at all. Hold your horses.

Just some info in the matter, the RIAA is the record industry, nothing to do with BMI, ASCAP SESAC and other, this are the ones that manage the songs, this are the ones that get the money and pay everybody.

A song in a public performance (and a public performance is consider 2 or more persons...) need to be either cleared or license. Like to say MTV pays a license feed per viewers per songs. A song to be used in a telecast lets say "Trust" need to be cleared to be perform. is kinda buying the use of that song. (and thats why in so many places they don't sing "Happy Birthday" they have to pay for it)

This is a topic that can go either way.

Not only is that incorrect but its a hell of an overstatement on Prince's role in all of this.
Filesharing and Youtube in the same sentence? no no no!
Prince is not crusading for artist's rights. Prince is crusading for the right to rule over his music with an iron fist.

Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

Hell if I know? I always thought the song was whack anyways. But of course, Jill, who I've always loved, has the stone right to perform this song in any format. This sounds a little more than a bit personal to me. I think P was hip to that article Jill had about P and P was like "Bitch..." So here this is.

You answered your own ?. She does not own the songs. Radio stations, movies producers and T.V. shows all pay to use and play music. What makes you think using music on your MY SPACE would be free.

Use the music until you get caught and get over it.

Besides does she not have a beef with P? I doubt she is going to get a pass.

I'm sure this has been discussed many times, but can someone tell me how Prince and Jill Jones went their separate ways? Obviously, their personal/business relationship didn't end on a positive note.

In 1987,after many years of delays,Jill Jones' debut album was finally released on Paisley Park Records. The album didn't do very well and in 1988,Jill went into the studio with another producer and recorded an album's worth of demos. She was trying to define herself, musically, and probably didn't want to be known as "just another Prince girl".Unfortunately,Prince had other ideas. In 1990,he began preparing her second album.Songs recorded during this period include "My Baby Knows How To Love Me","Flesh and Blood" and "Boom Boom (Can't You Feel The Beat Of My Heart",which was planned as the first single.A video was shot,as well.

Jill didn't like these new songs and she didn't like the direction that Prince was trying to take her in.The two were having alot of heated arguments and disagreements. The last straw came when Prince sent Jill the script for 'Graffiti Bridge'.He had promised her a bigger part but when she was reading the final script on a plane to Minneapolis, she angrily ripped it up,much to the surprise of the other passengers lol

By the end of 1990,it was evident that Prince and Jill had drifted apart. She wanted to move on and take her career forward but he wouldn't let her out of her contract. Thus, she was unable to sign a new record label and release new music for seven years.By 1995,she was singing backup for the disco band Chic. She probably feels that Prince sabotaged her career.
