A Pictorial Review Of The Day...

*LOTS OF SWEET-ASS PICS*

All Pics By Me smile

Damn man. Think u were standing exactly where I wanted to be!

Everyone has already said pretty much how I feel about the show. Fantastic. Amazing. One of his best. Get yr skinny ass out quicker next time....etc...etc....

Just to add...

1. Its the closest i'll surely ever get to Prince (gonna upload some pics v. soon) and I was absolutely loving seeing his facial expressions in real life.

Like how in the first few minutes he walked over to Andy (FIT!!!!!) while Shelby was cutting loose and had a similar look on his face like when Eric used to do his solos. Would've been hilarious to suddenly hear "Shelby Shut The Fuck Up!!". He also pointed to some guy right at the front, then to both his ear-wraps and then smiled to him....that was great to see. Seeing little things like that up close just make it so much more.......much more......i dunno.....fucking awesome i guess.

2. Teenie Tempah Tantrum was a bucket of ass, we all agree on that (except his guitarist, who rocked). But he served his purpose on bringing a younger crowd to see Prince, who are surely by now indoctrinated by the funk. And if theyre not then they should have their ass beaten all the way to HMV and forced buy some Prince albums!

3. Was lovely meeting and just seeing some of u lot amongst the crowd, I didnt really mingle with anyone at the 02 but standing around for 10hrs straight like a battery chicken I had to take my mind off my shins pushing through my kneecaps somehow.

Andrew Keen, u fecking pisshead! U were funny, even though i was going to stick that symbol banner up yr ass at one point! mad But seriously, u made me laugh calling EVERYONE a "cunt" every few minutes for no apparant reason, also enjoyed singing with you and CHOPIN all through the SOUNDCHECK!! We sang as many Prince songs as we could to keep everyone entertained....so if anyone was thinking "Dammit, shut them tonedeaf twats up!", or purposely didnt join in when we kept attempting to get everyone to chat "Oooh Waayyy Oohh!", well....then...bollocks to you im afraid! razz

4. Prince seems to attempt to disheaerten and annoys us on a monthly basis. Cancelling shows, being a twat, cease and disist vids & pics, taking the utter piss with failed internet endevours, low par albums, getting his ass sued off every week....etc etc.....

He tests us to the very limit. Proving WE ARE THE GREATEST FANS OF ANYTHING/ONE EVER!!!!! He doesnt know just how lucky he is......

But anyway, watching him from about 10metres away, even though it was part of a festival and there's a 1000 songs i wanted to hear, he reminded me of why I love the guy.

Great write up...agree with all your points....I think it was either Andy or Dave that had alot of fun with my brothers two string replica symbol guitar at the last gig in the O2 in 2007...I remember pointing out that home made symbol to my GF and telling her the embarrassing stories of the o2, but it reminds why your last point is so valid....we are after all "the freaks on this side" . Another great passion in my life is football, no prizes for guessing which club/clubs I support...

If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

hello all...just got back home from the festival...had a great time and really enjoyed the whole vibe...

.

as a few people have said on here...mobile phones didnt work very well so unable to meet up with people i wanted to from the org...i was looking for squirrel's purple pole but the only poles i saw were at the open urinals (very strange having to pee in full view of women confused ) ..so i didnt get the chance to meet anyone although i did bump into one orger who lurks a lot on here (cant remember his name...sorry) and a guy i work with !.....

.

first thing....i thought the sound quality of the pa system was the best i have ever heard....it was cystal clear from anywhere in front of the stage...right back to the very back....prince has never sounded as good imo....whatever they did it worked and that helped make the whole experience so much more enjoyable...i think that unique mentioned that the bass was too loud but i would rather have the bass too loud than too quiet and unique WAS right at the front....amazing sound...well done hop farm...

.

weather....perfect...it was warm but cloudy so it never got TOO warm...again...makes the whole experience soo much better...

.

i got there as eliza was playing so i saw a bit of imeda may (good) larry graham (please stick to the bass...please) and tinie tempah (so-so)...

.

prince...well by the time tinie had finished playing....me and my girlfriend were about 20 rows from the front to the right of the stage...he ...of course...kept us waiting an hour before he appeared to wild applause and started with 'we live to get funky' (great track)....after about ten fabulous mins... my girlfriend tells me her bladder is about to burst so i have to sadly vacate my hard earned position and went to the very back to the toilets (walking away from a prince gig...very strange )...i eventually watched the rest of the gig from a good bit back but the sound quality was amazing....prince was on fire...he played the hits but what else do you play to a festival crowd ?...but he did play 'cool' that most of the crowd wouldnt know but it sounds soo good live...

.

once larry graham came on....i know...i go on about him and he is a great great bass player ...but...he ruined the vibe once again and everyday people and whatever they played after it sounded like a mess to me...too much going on...but...overall...a great gig considering it was a festival gig....not as good as one nite alone 2002 gig for me or the last night at the o2 in 2007 but ...great nontheless...

.

me and pam got off our mark as soon as the gig finished and walked for about a mile before we got a taxi so didnt get caught in the 3 hour wait to get out the area...

.

would love to go to dublin but no way i can afford it so unless he comes back to the uk (which is unlikely )...thats it for this year...

.

thanks for a great day out prince...

So, back to work today...still on purple high. Shame there ain't no one I can share it with! Michael Buble/Take That/ Cheryl Cole etc all the way...dang. Was amazing - absolutely outstanding. My faith is restored in the P-Man for now. He still has it and he's nousy enough to write a hit if he needed to I am more than sure of that. Class is permanent, form is temporary. Has raised a couple of questions for me...

1) Should a DVD or CD be available of this in any form wink , will I get? Will it spoil the memory, and my memory become the recording. I have been avoiding youtube as I don't want to sully what is in my mind! I haven't actually listened to any music since Sunday night...

2) It was a top show, many are saying its up there, like I saw him in 92, then 95 (I think), but can't remember them that clearly (i were 16 and 19) - if he comes again, soon ought I go? Truly I'd love to but should I be happy with the memory - what if the next time is a Stade de France!!

3) We're spoilt I think with being able to hear live boots. They make the setlists and sequences over familiar, and nothing can compare to the actual show can it? Unless soundboard these recordings lack the energy and the 'being in the moment'. In short whilst I was blown away - in the old days a P concert was so much more special as reviews were scarce, getting setlists was a lot more difficult so getting to the concert was almost spiritual unexpected pure pleasure.

...oh, and has any one worked out what the whole Andy Allo Allo thing? Fit, yes, but I just don't get it!

Thank you Prince and thank you everyone for a wonderful day - let's do it again eh??? Peace. Mike Gee.

Comin str8 outta Preston...

I was not going to post these as they are nothing in comparison to what has been already posted, but I feel they take a different perspective of the show, I especially like the Prince looking down on Prince shot.

Do anyone else's calves still ache?!!!

I know it's a bit late, but I had to give my little write-up of a truly awesome weekend, that was absolutely worth all of the 670 miles that I spent driving!

I finished work here in Lincoln (I'm a Flight Planner for the Red Arrows at RAF Scampton) on Saturday evening & drove down to my folks in Wolverhampton.

Left Wolverhampton at 7 on Sunday morning with my brother (he's a casual Prince fan, seen him once before with me at the O2) & drove to the Goodwood Festival of Speed in Chichester. Had an awesome few hours in the sunshine, car & celeb spotting (Roger Taylor, Bear Grylls, Chris Evans).

I wanted to ask Lewis Hamilton about the $100,000 Prince guitar he bought, but I only saw him zooming past in an old F1 car!

After another 70 miles behind the wheel, arrived at Hop Farm at 4.30pm & parked in section 29 (which proved to be an absolute Godsend later on!). Milled around the stalls for a while (great hats & poncho's!), then caught Larry's set from the back of the crowd (OK).

We then politely worked our way further forward for Tinie Tempah's set. I thought he was OK, I know I'm not in his demographic (37), but I did comment that if his recorded stuff used real live musicians like the gig, I'd probably buy it. I was very impressed with his bass player's 7 string bass too!

Saw Prince's set from about 20 heads back & he was truly phenomenal! I loved the opening soundcheck, I'd love a copy on CD. His energy & humour were fantastic, he really held the crowd, made us laugh, sing, sweat & cry.

If I'm being critical (& it's hard to be), my only disappointment was I felt it was a little light on monster guitar solo's. I would have loved a Hendrix/Foo's cover like at the Superbowl, or a bluesy 'Purple House' would have been nice.

Still, it was probably the best that I've ever seen him (It was my 9th time). I've never been so close at a massive gig ( though I was front-row at Brixton in '98, for the Purple Rain solo, played on top of the piano!) & the whole atmosphere was perfect. I'm also now seriously in lust with Andy Allo razz.

As for the Festival organisation, I thought that it seemed very good. The loo's didn't smell too bad, the range of food was fantastic & thanks to being in section 29 of the car park, I was safely tucked up in my Premier Inn bed by 1230!

Oh & the poached eggs in the Premier Inn breakfast were perfect too.. biggrin

I've never been one for this thing obsession...

The best Prince concert i've seen - great, fun atmosphere!

Edit: Oh, and look out for my review in next week's Independent On Sunday. Bit of product placement, there.

[Edited 7/4/11 2:43am]

I hope that it is a better review than the one posted in the Indo last week about Glastonbury, that was some of the worst journalism I have ever seen, "Janelle Monae had little substance...", I was shocked as 1 newspaper is one of my favs...

I will be keeping an eye out for it next Sunday, and I totally agree with "BEST GIG I'VE SEEN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE"

Hah, I can't be held responsible for the cloth ears of my colleagues. I absolutely love Janelle...

wow - what a night - thanks for all the photos shared - my crappy mobile didnt do a great job...!

i think it was one of the best prince gigs ive been to (this was number 5) - i danced my socks off and kept having to apologise to people i kept knocking into!!!

some people were definately rude in the crowd - i told at least 3 lots of people to piss off and go and find somewhere else to stand as they came and pushed in in front of me!

aside from that - i gave up in the queue to get out - 25 m in half an hour was enough - i parked up again and got in the back seat of my car and went to sleep til 3am and then drove home!!! much better than getting stressed out!

Peace. Mike Gee.

I agree. leave it as a memory, i haven't watched a youtube vid since reading your post, thanks. Its a bit like the complaint about the constant arms in the air catching photos and video's, Im 5'5 so didn't appreciate that, but really love all the photos on here.

I grew up in leicester and we had demontford hall, before arena gigs anyone who did more than 10 shows nationwide pretty much came. I saw u2, inxs, rem, cameo, the cult and was spoilt growing up cause the sound was always good. then I went to NEC and hated it. I think it was paul young but it didn't matter who it was, Im a bass player and the problem is usually the bass quality. Quite soon i said i would only go to arena gigs for prince. I listened to oasis at main road with out of tune mancs singing wonderwall in my ear.

then prince at hammersmith appollo was great, I think it was in 2002, with Prince the ONLY guitar, and O2 1st night was my 39th birthday and although we were a long way away, I could see everything and the sound was OK. but sundays sound was great, my only 2 slight niggles were no horns, for me that makes the funk extra special, (anyone else got into Treme) and Kiss missed out with having the guitar so low in the mix. I thought maybe the lack of horns was about trimming the entourage, but then read in the sun it was 50 so that can't be it. Its only because he is so good and things usually are perfect (the initial live soundcheck summed it up) that the guitar thing sticks out.

sorry to go on, but anyone else trying to follow this thread on a phone and having to make it big enough to read and then having to scroll though photos over and over again?

Well lords ladies and gentlemen where do I start.....Oh yea, this concert was freaking incredible.

While on paper the setlist may look boring, however, this couldn't be further from the truth. Prince's energy gave songs like 'Kiss' and 'Controversy'a new leases of life, while 'Purple Rain' and 'Little Red Corvette' were possibly the best I've heard in a very long time.....if not ever. Furthermore, to add to the experience, whilst our tiny icon was banging out 'Purple Rain' everyone around me either had a tear in their eyes or on the cuff.

Prince was on top top form and so was his band...however, I didn't see much point for Andy...but she is very cute!

It was fantastic meeting people from the org, and hope to see you all again soon!!

BTW.....Here is a few pix of Prince, me and the symbol!

cool cool lol lol

Ah yes, I remember you guys. You were the ones who thought you could just push past everybody to the front at about 10 past 8 with absolutely no regard whatsoever about anybody else who had been standing there for 5 hours plus. I also had my young kids with me (7 & 8) who both love Prince and were almost trampled by the big guy in the very camp purple camouflage gear.

I'm not normally somebody who spreads negativity but you lot were well out of order. I've been a fan of Prince's for 20 years and I would never dream of acting the way you lot did, as if you had more right than those in front of you to get to the front.

Anyway, to the concert. Quite simply the best live performance I've seen from the man for a very long time. I think much of that however was down to the fact that it was at a festival and that big-stage environment really suited him. Absolutely loved 'We Live to Get Funky' what a way to start a gig.

My kids loved it too, they've been asking me since the gig if they can have the symbol incorporated into the way their bedroom is decorated. Talk about deja vu!! I was exactly the same when I was a kid!!

Bit harsh about Tinie, Unique - not my cup of tea at all (though I do like Pass Out) - loads of young kids round us were going mental for him - in my opinion he was dirge - it all sounded the same - HAHA - I am 40!!! Still its good to see the oung uns getting passionate about music and not Blue Wicked (even if that music is samey and lazy)....

harsh? i was being polite when i said he was utter shite. the sound was fucking terrible which didn't help. and where the fuck was the girl singing on half the songs? hiding under the dj booth?

No - I don't think you 'saying' he was shite was harsh (Personally I didn't like it and thought it was dirge) - what I thought was a bit harsh was your 'throat' comment.

I agree about the sound quality - the bass even made my T shirt vibrate which was a bit weird. But I do think, in general and as long as it is done well, that you can combine modern technology tricks with REAL music and come up with something good and if we didn't advance forward with technology we would be stuck listening to rocks being hit with sticks!

HAHA - my whole body ached (trying to sleep in car with only the sunday times as a blanket whilst waiting to get out didn't help!)

Felt absolutely wrecked yesterday and every single one of my 40 years BUT it was worth it - the standing about waiting in the sun (not burnt either lots of sunscreen), the 'patience' of listening to all the other bands on the main stage (although did get to see Sound of Rum who are pretty dam good), putting up with a moaning Boyfriend 'Are you really going to just stand here all day?' and then the car park debarcle and trippy car journey home (up to Toddington services where I just admitted defeat and grabbed 2 hours sleep) - YES DEFINATELY WORTH ALL OF THIS AND MORE JUST FOR THE THOSE FEW SPECIAL HOURS OF BRILLIANCE biggrin

Still wearing my wristband just to remind myself it was real and I was actually there - my work colleagues think I am bonkers and have a look of 'Awww bless it's just Zoe being strange again'

QUALITY QUALITY QUALITY - now back to work wink

lol

Us hippies arrived at our spot around 1:30/2ish (8 hours before PRINCE!) to catch Aloe and we didn't leave till the end of P's set (Minus some toilet breaks)..Explains the burning calves...So have no idea about having no regard for anybody else at '10 past 8'. However, I can only speak for myself and the two chicks with me, not the other 30,000+ people all moving at once.

However, I would like to apologise for upsetting a 20 year prince fan. I’ve only been into him for 11 years now, but once I reach your level I’m more than sure to have learnt my lesson.

But anyway, watching him from about 10metres away, even though it was part of a festival and there's a 1000 songs i wanted to hear, he reminded me of why I love the guy.

highfive

Totally out of order there mate.I got into position at around 3:00pm these guys were already there.Fans were freely moving around at this time.

They were about 10 people over to the left of me and seemed to be having a great time.

The big fella came past me at one point and was very polite and full of smiles as the vibe was superb.

You should have been next to the couple who were pissed out of their minds and insisted on splashing their contraband liquor which smelt like camel piss all over everyone. Then there was the random screaming of the wrong lyrics all followed up by snogging the face off each other, then her collapsing to the ground....repeat this process for two hours and i think you got of lightly lol people were there to have a good time and they did, i wouldn't have changed a thing! cool

Hutchi

That gig was amazing! It was great to see some younger folks getting blown away by Prince. O nthe shuttle bus back there were alot of people who hadn't seen Prince before and were in awe of the guy. He totally rocked the place out and was by far the best performer across all the festivals so far this year.

As for Tinie Tampon or whatever his name is..colaborate with Prince!? Please, learn to appreciate music first. You can't just ask a guy to colaborate just because he was standing in the same field as you ( which u should think urself priveladged for ).

And finally...The Sun newspaper, crying on about Prince's demands for the show etc etc, unfortuantly for The Sun, no - one gives a crap what they have to say. This is the newsgroup company that hacked into a murdered schoolgirls mobile phone, so we all know where thier level of journalism lies...in the gutter.

Best gig i've been to, Prince looked lively, happy and really pleased with the crowds reaction...seriously...how good was Little Red Corvette!!!???

"slowwwww Downnnnnnn" <----AWSOME!!!!

Thank you all so much for your reviews and the wonderful photos smile I couldn't attend for reasons I won't repeat again. I don't drive either and at the rate I walk would be guaranteed to miss the shuttle bus and have been begging for hours in the carpark for a lift. Regarding the setlist complaints someone who covered Prince and probably paid for his furnishing in that house he bought smile had complaints that he didn't sing enough hits at a recent Festival. My ideal setlist would be 1999 & Dirty Mind played in their entirety followed by a bside epic encore. If that ever happens I'll get my tits out at that venue with a roof:)
