Think the only tune you forgot was the cover version of Adele's "Make You Feel My Love" which actually went down well, as its a popular tune and all the non Prince fans were singing along to...trying to remember where it slotted into the setlist though...was it after Cream...???

Maybe most know "Make you feel my Love" cause it's a Bob Dylan song.

I enjoyed the gig too. Like others I thought the sounds was spot on for Prince (far better than I recall at the O2). I also liked the sound in so much as it came across as quite heavy and lots of heart pumping bass and not light and 'pop' so suited the Festival audience well.

The opening track was rather good - Prince issuing orders about sound levels and speaker warmth just helps show what an amazing talent and perfectionist he is.

Sure I would've liked less covers and some rare songs but I'm not complaining - I always wonder if Prince really enjoys himself or just after so many years he is a rather good actor?

I had no problem with my mobile signal (vodafone) it took about 40 mins to get out of car park but we were in section 28 and and went to the right which moved at a much faster rate than the left hand side.

i just cut ans pasted the setlist from elsehwere i think its the only show i can say im not too fussed about an aftershow as it was an endurance test enough going to the main show and my legs were and still are aching. and the hassle with cars would have stressed me out if i couldnt get to the aftershow before everyone else

It was EXCELLENT...the best Prince concert I've been to (when comparing to others, been to ONA Live and 3 x 02 arena).

Before the show started they played old videos of Prince proteges like The Time, The Family, Mazarati, Taja Sevelle, Patti LaBelle, Brown Mark - it was great to see these vids as I hadn't seen most of them before! I don't think many people knew those songs but it was a real treat for us more hardcore fans!

Prince was very playful and fun and made lots of facial expressions at the audience, he seemed to be having fun and so did his band!

It made me laugh when he kept singing at the edge of the stage in front of the Danger/Noise signs!!

He was an excellent showman as ever, keeping good eye contact with different parts of the audience.

There was a nice atmosphere and Prince seemed to thrive off it too....it is a good little festival, not too crowded and nicely spaced out.

Not just crazy P fams either, there was a good cross section of society and age groups there which added to it.

Perfect weather too....well worth seeing him at a festival!!! I hope he does it again someday.

If there was a TV feed or a DVD of this, this would be all you need to convince your friends/family into understanding why you like Prince so much!!!

Really good fun!!

[Edited 7/3/11 16:42pm]

but wait... ONA was also excellent - 3 hours live with . jazz ,funk.soul. rock pop, acoustic music!!!

I am still on cloud 9. I don't even know what to say. It truly was amazing, and I have to agree with everyone that says it was one of their favourite Prince performances. You really had to be there to feel the vibe, it was beyond electric! His energy was just....I havent seen him move like that in ages! The setlist was appropriate, well chosen, and for me it was fantastic to see Prince and Larry together singing SATFS songs.

I cant even think straight today...this is what Real music can do...

There must be something wrong with the machinery!

He better not leave it another 4 years before he comes back to the UK. When he does decide to tour he has to include the UK in it always, and thats and order! He should just move over here, simple tings! lol Look at the reception he got, it was wonderful.

Still buzzing, think this gig's gonig to take a while to "wear off", it was that good. Here's a nice review which made me smile:

http://www.sabotagetimes....-on-earth/

Prince At The Hop Farm: The Greatest Show On Earth

A couple of months ago the list of festival headliners, with the exception of Pulp, was a pretty unappealing load of cobblers. We had U2, Bongo and The Privet hoping they wouldn’t slip a disc at Glastonbury. Coldplank hopping around like a special needs Morris Dancer, and Beyonce giving it Hair and Lungs but no tunes. Eminem and Arctic Monkeys hold little appeal and for many a lack of Acne or Ginger Hair (dyed black) makes them ineligible to like Muse or My Chemical Romance. Watching The Strokes these days is even less appealing than suffering one.

Then, out of nowhere came the news that Prince, The Purple Yoda, was going to be giving it some leg in a (potentially muddy) field in Kent. A tacked-on day at The Hop Farm Festival. To a long suffering Prince Anorak like myself this is incredible. He doesn’t do Festivals. Not since the catastrophe (so rumour has it) of when, as a fledgling artist, he nipped for a pre-show wee at an open air gig, became trapped after his heels sunk in the mud, and thousands of people unwittingly walked past him thinking he was a ‘cheeky gnome’ water feature, installed by the organisers, subsequently his band got booed off after playing a set of instrumentals without him.

But seriously, none of Prince’s peers and parallel artists enjoyed the lengthy and steady rise and plateau of creative and commercial success that he did, Stevie Wonder peaked, in that sense, for 3 long players, Sly Stone for two, Marvin Gaye for two, Michael Jackson for three, Hendrix for three. For James Brown only ‘In the Jungle Groove’ and a couple of live albums were truly cohesive. But Prince had seven consecutive superbly executed and presented albums, they were the three before, and the three after and including, ‘Purple Rain.’ Plus many great B-sides and rarities from the same period. Prior to ‘Dirty Mind’ he was finding his feet. At ‘Lovesexy’ the quality of his output became spasmodic.

Presented with this aspect even the die-hard fans agree that his edgy days are behind him, but that wasn’t the concern at Hop Farm tonight, it was whether he could win over an audience outside of the boundaries of his comfort zone, a sleepy smallholding in the English countryside, consisting largely of Newbies and Cooler Box Casuals.

Luckily the (regular coloured) rain stayed away. Prince and his band ambled on stage, he apologised in advance for using the opening instrumental as a soundcheck. It wasn’t the intro people wanted to hear. There was apprehension.

He then proceeded to play the greatest show I have ever been lucky enough to witness. He blasted through pretty much everything one would hope for. Gave us exactly what we wanted. ‘Lets Go Crazy’, ‘1999’, ‘Raspberry Beret’, ‘Little Red Corvette’ ‘Kiss’, ‘Cream’, loads more, interspersed with lesser known numbers and interludes, during which he displayed serious footwork, spins and pirouettes, and remind us what a superb guitarist he is.

As the sun set it dawned on the audience that this performance was special. Hop Farm was no longer a gig, it was a party. 40,000 people danced, they didn’t mosh or get crushed or wait for the anthems or express angst or beat their chests, they danced! Shimmied their Tushes and waved their hands like they just didn’t care. He is not just the world’s finest song and dance man, he is an entertainer with the prowess and chutzpah to make the punters feel that the show is a celebration and it belongs to them.

Amongst the choice pickings from his archive he dropped in Michael Jackson songs, cracked a few jokes, cooed through a couple of ballads, thanked Sinead O’Conner for paying for his house, then stepped aside and let the backing singers cover Adele, by this time the choice of tune didn’t matter. He could have played George Formby songs and we would have been convinced it was appropriate. He finished the main set with ‘Purple Rain’. I saw people crying as they swayed. The whole audience was won over. Job done. It all seemed so effortless.

He then returned for several encores, more favourites plus covers of ‘Play that funky Music (White Boy)’ by Wild Cherry, Sly Stones ‘Everyday People’ segued into a groovy-gospel version of The Beatles ‘Come Together’ then segued into Sly’s ‘I Want To Take You Higher’ plus other shamelessly full-on disco workouts. It was a Funk Frenzy. He kept reminding us that ‘This ain’t nothing but a party y’all.’ He was having a ball, we were having a ball.

Long after the floodlights came up people chanted for more. On the way out I saw a girl sat inspecting her feet, telling her friends that she’d danced her toenails off. I asked strangers what they thought of the evening. Their opinions matched mine. If word of this incredible night gets out the biggest draw at future of festivals may well Prince. Fit some dance floors!

Live musical performance is the domain of Prince. He continues to set the bar. If you don’t believe me go and see him for yourself, or ask the people there tonight. He makes every other act look stale, clumsy, inept or boring. Yesterday was a great day. Thank you little fella!

wow, never thought i'd enjoy such a boring setlist so much.. had such a perfect night, it was great to have him on home turf. the night exceeded my expectations cuz i knew we'd get the hits, but the atmostphere was really pumped & so was prince

the weather was great, no mud, flip flops & flowers in hair!!.. butterflies & purple hippies!!

there were t-shirts, couple of designs.. i got the red/white/blue design, british stylee. there was a standard hop farm design with the band listings & a programme of events that used an old promo shot of w2a & basic info

i got there as eliza doolittle was going on stage & headed 2wards the front which was no problem.. managed about 4 rows back from barrier!.. then right b4 the show u got the tossers who wanna plonk themselves smack bang in front of u!! sod that i don't do sardines!..

i ended up telling people u got NO fucking chance!! which seemed to do the trick

enjoyed imelda may set even though the tunes all merged in2 one, sounding like the same song.

larry graham got bumped off the stage to make way 4 tinie tempah wtf?.. it was depressing seeing kids go mad 4 this bloke, it was very grim, plus it made me feel very old

ok so prince was SO cool, made everything look so effortless.. the sound was amazing..

he announced a soundcheck & went in2 'we live to get funky' & had the crowd singing along, GREAT song,

omg shelby j vajazzled her head!! lol

the whole band did a great job, ida is so classy.. & no denying andy allo is tres pretty.. & obviously very much the muse. she gives a vintage aire imo

prince was all over her at times.. she grins & bears it, the poor thing

& it was like hearing the hits 4 the first time & even his cringy kiss dance felt fresh & energized!

prince was on fire!!!! even if his shirt was a bit beige..

he talked about respecting your elders! asked after old skool & then wanted the new skool screaming..

some fun stuff during little red corvette.. guys singing slow down.. the girls singing whhooohoo!

prince told the blokes to tell their women they gotta slow down & then mocked the women by doing a black lady head wobble, like he better not slow down.. funny stuff anyway.

purple rain had a cool addition.. like a little chant, he was very in2 it!...purple rain! purple rain! purple rain in the sky! oh yeah! oh yeah, 1...2...y'all know what 2 do!!....... bloody lovely it was!

tea & doughnuts after!

speaking to prince some newbies, they LOVED the show.. someone said he didn't want the show to end! some other guy totally in love with andy allo

some others, female bass players were in awe of ida talked about how shocked they were that tinie tempah was plonked between the 2 legends.. he certainly spoiled the flow

some kids on the way out were like '& he played ALL his songs!!!!'..

oh & no problem with cameras!.. there will be a lot of pix, it was hard not to take lots of them

What a day!

Arrived @ 11.30am and pitched up on my own awaiting Aloe Blacc - he didn't disappoint. Second only to Prince on the Sunday Lineup. Imelda May was good as was Larry Graham - Seemed that he had his set cut short due the amount of time it took for his crew to set up! Didn't quite get the hype around Tinie Tempah, good at what he does but not my cup of tea.

By the time Larry had come I had worked my way to dead centre of stage about 3-4 people back - I wasn't going to lose my spot with a trip to the loo.

Prince kept us waiting, but it was good to see all those old videos on the big screen even though most people didn't understand the link. After what seemed ages waiting Shelby came out on stage with a handful of t-shirts - she stepped centre stage and lobbed one right in my direction. Happy days!!!! People around me were very jealous.

As for the concert, it was as we all expected - hits and covers. I knew he wasn't going to play a fan friendly set list (that's what aftershows are for) but the hits he did play, were played the best I've seen. This show was head and shoulders above the five o2 shows I saw in 2007. Loved the opener 'We Live 2 Get Funky' and great versions of 1999, Delirious & Raspberry Beret.

Band were awsome - so in sync with Prince. That is apart from Andy Allo who seems as though she is getting some on the job training. Don't get me wrong was still very good (and Gorgeous) but it looked as though Prince was giving her pointers throughout the show. During one of the encores she was running around throwing more t-shirts into the crowd - it looked like she was balling them up with sheets of paper, I can only assume these were set lists??

Overall it was a great day and a great show. My back was killing me from standing for nearly 11hrs and my bladder was fit to burst.

To top it off it took 2.5hrs to get out of the car park!! I did come prepared and brought a pillow and had a kip for 2hrs to find the same cars still around me trying to get out. Nightmare!!

HAHA - TOOK THE WORDS RIGHT OUT OF MY MOUTH - biggrin

Had a brilliant if strenuous day - good times. Unfortunately not as organised as you and had no blankets to keep warm whilst trying to sleep in the car park! Still the sunday times came in handy :/

What a flood of emotion I will remember this as up there with the best times of my life - so HAPPY .

Prince I just love you - thank you for being smile

until the next time...

^ "wow, never thought i'd enjoy such a boring setlist so much.."

Same here - had this interesting thought - why is particualr setlist/performance working so much better then say NPS Wembley '98, the format is pretty much the same - hits/sly covers/larry, but from memory those concerts were panned by critics and got luke warm response from audiences...the intention isn't that diff from back then - play your hits/make money...

Aside from the steller ONA, it's been pretty much the same...but the mass appeal live show is really, really working this time, wonder why?

He complains that when people cover his songs, his version of the songs will be forgotten. Then he performs Nothing Compares 2 U and says it's Sinéad O'Connor's song when it's really his. What the fuck? Make up your mind...

If you listened to what else he said you will see he was being Sarcastic.

Sounds like a fun night. Wish I could have been there, I even had a ticket lined up, but hey-ho, next time.

A good version of Purple Rain? didn't think I'd hear you say that!

no afters then? not even a rumour?

Not that I'm aware of. Unless thats why there are so few on here this morning. They all went to the aftershow and I missed out! lol

Yeah Purple Rain, one of the songs I think he should rest for a few years was a corker.

The 82-85 stuff sounded particularly good last night because Prince was quite focussed and in the zone. He was really feeling PR last night, more that the last 100 times I've seen him do it. It reminded me of the performances in the Nude tour.

well thanks for the report, and i'm glad you all had a cool time. I'm not jealous. Much. OK, i am. Just on e question, Did you chuck a glo-stick at him??!!??
