The Lighthouse (2019)

This movie was intense and I'm still trying to figure out WTF I just watched. I wanted to see this when I found out Robert Eggers was behind it. This is the guy who's debut work was the movie "The Witch" that I still think is an amazing movie.

Short story - Willem Dafoe is an actor on the level of Daniel Day Lewis and is this movie.

Longer story - It's shot in B/W and in a square aspect ratio and tells the story of a couple of men and what happens while maintaining a lighthouse. Not sure what time period it's set in but it feels like the early 1900's. The movie takes you in between the characters nightmares/hallucinations while they both start to lose their minds. I know there's more here but I'm going to have to watch it a few more times to fully understand it.

This is my favorite film of 2019.

Le charme discret de la bourgeoisie / The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972) - A surreal, virtually plotless series of dreams centered around six middle-class people and their consistently interrupted attempts to have a meal together.

This is the funniest Luis Buñuel film I've seen. 4.5/5

American Graffiti (1973)

George Lucas wrote this movie based on his youth in the 50s. All star cast and I loved seeing Harrison Ford and Richard Dryfuss as a younger men. Average acting overall but I thought the different story lines kept it interesting.

Cameo by Wolfman Jack was a nice suprise, just can't believe I hadn't seen this movie before.

This is a delightful romantic fantasy and even more enjoyable when you know all the artists included as characters. Witty script, beautiful photography and the signature 30s/40s soundtrack cap off a perfect romantic comedy.

Wow. This film put George Lucas on the map and launched a lot of careers. I think it's rather brilliantly directed and written - one night, several overlapping subplots and a great ensemble cast. I would give it a 5/5

Maybe because I knew about this movie and because it was George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola working together...I guess I just expected something better. Clearly I'm in the minority with this opinion as the movie was not only successful but influential.

The cultural significance of this movie marks the beginning of 1950s nostalgia in the 1970s. The television show Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley, the movie Grease and the comeback of Sha Na Na were all hugely successful.

Never saw the tag line but Ron Howard had zero to do with me thinking it was set in the 50s.

I think it was the cars, the music, the clothes and the Vietnam war started in the 50s.

Now I know it was 1962...thanks for that.

I watched a short animation film called Coyote and it was dark, emotional, trippy and beautiful, and also quite brutal.

It´s about a coyote that wants to avenge its family that gets killed and eaten by a pack of wolves. If you like revenge movies, you´ll love this little gem of an animation film.

I really enjoyed it a lot.

Surreal on multiuple levels and a bit intense at times, two ingredients that always get me into a movie. I love the animation art style and use of color as well.

So much in 10 minutes...just really cool...

Apocalypse Now (1979)

Another movie I've read about but never sat down a watched. There are so many lines I've heard repeated from this movie.

Cinematography was amazing, the storyline kept my attention (even though it's 2.5 hrs). Great writing, all star cast and there's multiple messages that I need to figure out. It's really just a masterpiece that will hold up for years to come.

Finally got around to watching this and have to say I rather enjoyed it. Nice performances by Damon and Bale, entertaining and fast-paced storyline. Corporate jerks try to interfere in the race, and kind of succeed on one PR level, but the final props go to the designer and driver of the cars.

I finally watched it tonight. It was interesting with some major surprises.

A few days ago was July 4th so what better time to view one of, if not the greatest, disaster movie of all time? The movie itself is great. Jeff Goldblum steals the show playing a version of himself and Bill Pullman's President truly is the President you need right now. This movie is also notable for being one of two movies where I can tolerate Will Smith (the other being Men In Black). Sure, the movie is cheesy but as far as entertainment goes, you need look no further. Plus it's got better special effects than most movies made today. No matter how good CGI gets, you can never beat the look of miniatures. As for my daughter, she loved it too. Although I think she was rooting for the aliens 😂. My score - 4/5 My daughter's score - BEST MOVIE EVER.

I 100% agree with that. Look how great 1979 Alien still looks today.
