DC

1, Superman
Most versions of Superman are on the money for me. Christopher Reeve is my all time favourite but the animated series version, Brandon Routh, Dean Cain, Tom Welling and even the ones from some of the novels I've read are all great too.

2. Batman
Specifically, the Michael Keaton and animated series versions. They are both entirely different but also equally definitive in my view.

3. Wonder Woman
Again, almost based entirely on the movie version but the animated series and novels versions are great.

4. Lex Luthor
I prefer my villains to be completely evil bastards and Lex Luthor is my favourite villain of all time

5. The Joker
The Jack Nicholson Joker is my favourite but I also love every Mark Hamill iteration.

Marvel

1. Captain America
The ultimate good guy. Which is what a hero should be.

2. Captain Marvel
She's my daughter's favourite superhero so I have to have her pretty high on my list.

3. Jessica Jones
Not a typical hero and sometimes she can be quite a bitch. I can relate.

4. Thor
Purely based on the movie version. For obvious reasons.

5. Magneto
I know I said that I prefer my villains to be pure evil but the thing is, I don't even see Magneto as being an out and out bad guy. He's fighting against the oppression of his people. Ok, he doesn't fight fair but why should he? He didn't start the conflict.

My only knowledge of these characters comes from either movies or cartoons. I've never actually read a comic book. I have The Dark Knight Returns and A Death In The Family but I've never actually read them. So I'm kind of basing my favourite characters off the movie and cartoon versions.

When I was small, I always wanted to be Supergirl. Superman was my favourite hero so when I seen Supergirl I seen a someone with all of Superman's powers and a similar costume but she was female. She looked a bit like me, blonde hair etc. I'd never seen a female Superhero before so even though the movie was a bit crap it still felt kind of special to me.
My daughter is the spitting image of me when I was her age so sometimes I think she's also interested in the same things I was. But she hated Supergirl. And I can't blame her because the movie is terrible but it completely soured her on the character. But she loved Captain Marvel. Captain Marvel has become to her what Supergirl and Superman was to me. And I literally got teary eyed when she told me why Captain Marvel was her favourite. She said it was because Captain Marvel reminded her of me. Just thinking about it now makes me well up. Even though I'd rather she think of me as Supergirl. But I'll settle for Captain Marvel.

Yes, the 70s comic series is widely recognized as an excellent satirical book. The movie sadly had none of its wit.
