How do you store your music collection? All you guys and gals with hundreds of CD's, albums' cassettes ect how do you store them? All in alphabetical order? By genre? By who you listen to the most? No order? Maybe by decades? Or maybe you have certain groups together. Maybe Motown here and Sountrack albums there? If it's by alphabet order, is Funkadelic and Parliament together or separate under "F" amd "P" Is Prince and all of his associates together? How is it. PRINCE: Always and Forever

All of Prince & associate CDs are in their own bins. Everyone else is stacked on shelves by individual/group. Downloaded stuff is burned on CDs and put in binders. Wish I had room for vinyls. Alphabetical by last name. Alterations to that are:
Band names with an A on the front, like A Tribe Called Quest, are filed under ATRI...or whatever their letters are, since A is part of the proper name. Bands with a number, like 2Unlimited or 4 Non Blonds, the number is spelled out. So it'd be Two Unlimited, Four Non Blonds, Apollonia Six, or Ten CC " don’t really care so much what people say about me because it is a reflection of who they r."

Alphabetical order by artist and then chronological when I have multiple artist albums (which is most of them). Prince, The Jackson Family and Soundtracks have their own separate shelves with all singles stored chronologically.
I'm particularly proud of having New Kids on the Block directly followed by Nirvana. [Edited 5/24/17 23:13pm]

Mostly in their discs no order at all. Except Prince and Michael Jackson, in which the albums are all kept in Chronological order and a separate shelf for Bootlegs and non official Prince. . Records - All Prince singles in chronological order, then albums and then 12 inch singles, then same for all proteges. Then all other 12 inch albums of other artists in order of Michael Jackson, other 80s and finally all other including several old albums of my mothers (Mostly 70s disco and hippie stuff like Hair and Jesus Christ superstar). All my 78s are in chronological order according to 78s world. I have 78s from a Zonophone of 1912 up to a Everly Brothers 78 of 1957. . Other records like singles are in date order from a Benjamin Britten/Peter Pears 45 of January 1952 up to my last vinyl single - Milli Vanilli's "Girl I'm gonna miss you" released in November 1989. Of the 100 or so single, some 65 of them date between 1977 and 1984. . I only have 5 cassettes, all Prince and they are kept on a shelf in Chronological order. . Plus I have most of this music on digital files on my computer, Itunes and a 2TB hard drive I keep separate in a box and backup onto every month. Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

This just reminds me of High Fidelity when Rob is reorganising his vinyl biographically - in the order he bought them.

Usually by the singer/group together.

I have over 2000 CDs so its impossible for me to find the time to put them in alpha order. Best i can do is by artist and year of original release. I'm pretty good at going to the shelves and grabbing what i need fairly quickly. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

All artist/bands in alphabetical order - from left to right. . All releases then in chronological order - from left to right. . When I buy various artist/soundtracks, they go into the artist which is the reason for buying it. . For example, I bought the Jimmy Hendrix tribute album for the Prince track, so that gets filed in Prince. . Prince associated artists are in the chronological order within Prince - for example, it's important to have Vanity 6, The Time, Controversy / 1999 together as it shows the musical progression. If you listen to those in chronological order you will hear exactly what I mean. . It's also important to have the black album in 1987, for the same reason, as you will hear the musical progression from SOTT, black and Lovesexy - it's a pity this progression stopped when Batman came out. . The only exception to the above is Wendy & Lisa - they have their own category. They are bloomin' amazing and Prince had nothing to do with their music other than one remix. .

So where is 2 Live Crew stored? I think storing them under T's defeats the whole purpose of their name. They're called 2 Live Crew not Too Live Crew lol. PRINCE: Always and Forever

. That's a good point. . I will never own a Tupac Shakur album, but if I did he would be under 'S' for sure. . It's a good point about numbers - it bugs me that people don't understand that numbers preceed letters. . For example, my 300 blu rays, are filed as 300, certainly before 'A' and before '2001' and '2012' but after '7 Below', but NEVER 'three'. . I have a massive issue with THE!!!!!!! To remain on topic, take for example The Time and The Family, they would be filed under T and F. . The Police would be P, and so on and so on... .

. Without doubt, if the brand is 2 Live Crew, then file as 2 and not T. .

Tupac doesn't go by Tupac Shakur. His stagename is 2Pac. That would be like placing Prince's music under N for Nelson. PRINCE: Always and Forever

. That's way too complicated for me LOL . A-Z is enough! . I do find it's funny in record shops, Prince can be pop in one and soul in another. . He has always been pop!!! For You is very much a soul record but the others are pop albums. .

. in that case if the brand is 2Pac, then I totally agree with you, without doubt he will be under 2. . Thank goodness Janet Jackson is J regardless LOL .

. Ordering records that way is soooo lazy! He'll never find anything LOL. . It would be like wearing the first two socks you find in your draw in a morning regardless of them matching. . That would throw the world off it's axis and it will be the end of the world as we know it LOL. .

Alphabetical order by artist and then chronologically if the artist has multiple albums. Various artist compilations and soundtracks are separate at the end.

. Those poor 12inch singles stuck at the end - how could you LOL .

I have rap, gospel/sermon LPs, jazz & country all together, but none of the rest is in any particular genre order. I don't put 45s, cassettes, 3 inch CD singles, and CD singles/albums that came in a LP style cardboard slipcase in any kind of order at all and nothing is in ABC order. I have group & solo stuff together like Beatles/Wings/George Harrison/etc, Genesis/Brand X/Phil Collins/etc, & Duran Duran/Power Station/Robert Palmer. I have a record by a Beatles soundalike group called The Liverpools with The Beatles albums. I have all Jackson family stuff together. I do put a particular act stuff in order of release and put maxi singles after the album they came from if I have the album. In some cases I have similar acts together like New Edition/Five Star/NKOTB/Force MDs, Minnie Riperton/Deniece Williams/Syreeta/Chanté Moore, Temptations/Spinners/Dramatics/O'Jays/etc, & Basia/Swing Out Sister You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

My partner divided soundtracks and compilations in their own section to make space in the artist shelving, and that has been working out quite well.
