. The is a very interesting question - one I pondered a few months ago. . The answer is in the historical context. The Jackson 5, The Jacksons, Michael, La Toya, Jermaine etc are all intertwined. . Therefore I looked at the Jackson family in a broader context. . So I file under 'J' for 'Jackson' and I run all family members in chronological order. In fact during many years, all incarnations had something released, so in this case I file buy the month the record was released. . It sounds complicated, but it isn't really. Historically this just means all Jackson family output is on a single timeline. .

Don't know. I posted when it was in the Non-Prince music section. If the thread was originally posted here I wouldn't have seen it because I don't look at this part of the site. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

. In all honesty I've never heard of any of those people but I would imagine artists would be filed by the name they record by. But people can file their music the way they want to. I suppose someone could file Madonna under Madge if they wanted to LOL. . In slight contradition, I've never segregated and the NPG from Prince, as it is Prince but just under a different name. . Personally I like ordering artists along a timeline, for exmple Sting was in a band called The Police, so Sting is under P for Police. . The Police and Sting then run in chronological order along a single timeline. . I also do this with Alison Moyet who was in a band called Yazoo. .

If I have a duet maxi single, I put it with the act from which album it came from. Like Get It & Say Say Say goes with Stevie Wonder & Paul McCartney, not Michael Jackson. Diamonds goes with Herb Alpert and Ebony & Ivory with Paul McCartney. If it's an entire album, generally I put it with the act that I have the most stuff by or name is on the record 1st like Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell goes with Marvin. Multiple act records go together (We Are The World, U Will Know, Sun City, King Holiday, Freedom, Do They Know It's Christmas, etc). I also have soundtracks, tribute albums, & various artist compilation albums (ig. MTV Party To Go, Billboard Top Hits Of 1977, AM Gold, Epic Dance Singles, Phat Trax, Time-Life, K-Tel, Stars On 45, etc.) together. A soundtrack by one performer goes with their other records, like Jungle Fever goes with Stevie Wonder. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I generally group all my bands together Barkays, Confunkshun, Cameo, EWF, Mint Condition, Time, etc on one shelf and all my female artists on another shelf, and male solo artists on another. Of course if I have multiple cd's by an artist I keep them together. I don't buy cd's anymore so I'm not really hurting for space. It's to the point I'm lucky if I purchase 5 cd's a year. With the bluetooth speaker craze I listen to Spotify and have several playlists. Spotify has Mass Production entire Lp catalog and other rare lp's which I would have a hard time trying to cop elsewhere so it even lessens the need for me to go on vinyl hunts. . Without any doubt, that does make a lot of sense! . What do you do with compilations that have J5, TJ and MJ all on one release? . I must say that I do like having the whole family on one timeline as it is so interesting to see who was do what during the same time period. . Also, it solves the problem I noted above! . It would be funny if one day a Jackson family compilation CD was released which included Jermaine, Janet and La Toya as it's common for J5, TJ and MJ to feature together on a release. .

Alphabetical and then in chronological order. I pay no attention to genre; Mothers Finest comes after Ennio Morricone and before Muddy Waters. The exception is when an artist records under different names: all George Clinton/Bootsy albums are under the P for P-Funk. Same with The Family, Sheila E etc; they're next to the Prince albums. Then i have a two row record selection where all the minneaolis funk is and is stored by artist...All the Time, Prince, Janet, Ready For The World, Sheile etc albums are in a certain section. All the 60s pop and rock in a section, rap in a section etc I used to do that too, I just didn't know where to put my Kate Bush records!

I don't have that album. But since I have those kind of male vocal groups together, it doesn't really make a difference. Probably The Dramatics if their name is 1st. I don't really know much Dells music. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
