Despite renewing the late-night s...homore run in February, CBS Television Distribution has instead opted to cancel the series.

“Unfortunately, The Arsenio Hall Show will not return for a second season; while there are many loyal fans of the show, the series did not grow its audience enough to continue," CBSTVD said in a statement Friday. "Arsenio is a tremendous talent and we’d like to thank him for all the hard work and energy he put into the show. We’d also like to thank Tribune and all our station group partners for their support of the show.”

Added Hall: "When I started this adventure with CTD and Tribune, we all knew it would be a challenge -- I’m gratified for the year we’ve had and proud of the show we created. I’d like to thank everyone on my staff for rallying around me and striving to make the best show possible every night."

The decision to backpedal on a renewal comes as station groups Sinclair Broadcast Group, Tribune Co. and LIN Television all downgraded the series from its respective time slots. CBSTVD originally announced a second-season pickup in February, citing that the series is the youngest-skewing late-night talk show and that Hall was "reaching a new generation."

Hall's second time as the host of a syndicated talk show launched in September and was anchored on 17 stations owned by Tribune Broadcasting -- a partner in the production of the show -- including markets in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. The series had aired in most markets starting at 11 p.m., going head-to-head with local news and off-network syndicated shows. The second half-hour of Hall's show faced stiff competition from the likes of the newly reinvigoratedTonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live and CBS' Late Show With David Letterman.

Despite premiering to optimistic numbers, 1.5 rating with households (and, more importantly, a 1.0 rating among adults 18-49), the ratings took a dive. The talker dropped 60 percent in the key demo within its first several months. There were bright spots along the way. A visit from prince Prince saw ratings surge 56 percent in March, tying even ABC's Jimmy Kimmel that night, but the pressure cooker of the Jimmy Fallon era late night was ultimately too much. Arsenio was further walloped in the ratings whenDavid Letterman's April 3 announcement of his retirement drove up attention on CBS.

The Arsenio Hall Show joins fellow late-night talker The Pete Holmes Show in the canceled heap, with TBS axing the latter after two seasons. For her part, Chelsea Handler will also end her E! late-night show in August.

Very sad to hear about this! I was excited when he was picked up for a second season. Now they backpedal. It shows NOTHING is guaranteed in the entertainment industry!!!

Im glad I was able to attend & see Prince along with several other shows I attended to show my support for Arsenio. No matter what anyone on this site says about him. He is a CLASS ACT!!!!

What a shame! I wonder why it seemed to have so many reruns all of a sudden. This is really sad especially since they renewed his show but now obviously has taken it back. How do some of the late night hosts managed to get renewed despite how the ratings go? I think Arsenio could have benefited from better writers but as someone else just said in this thread, you have to give it time to grow and improve. This is really sad.

Although I haven't watched it since it's been back on the air, I'm really sad to see it go. It was the only non-cable TV outlet many veteran R&B artists had to expose their music and let the people know they are still out there. You are never going to see someone like El Debarge on Jimmy Fallon or any of the other late night shows.

That's true because I can't see some of the veteran acts on the other shows. Arsenio also had amazing spoken word artists that I'm SURE would not be on the other shows.....what's the deal with them saying that his show was renewed then suddenly pulling back and canceling the show? I also blame this on how ratings are gathered in the first place. I mean really, how much effort does Nielsen put into have a diverse group of people having those Nielsen boxes in their homes that measure TV ratings....

I hope Oprah or TVOne steps in and does the right thing.

What doesn't make sense is they let Jay Leno come on Arsenio and announce it was getting picked up for a second season. Then turn around and humiliate Arsenio & cancel the show anyway two months later! What do they have against Arsenio & Jay? This is unheard of. They didn't even let the show build an audience.

Yeah Colbert is really heavy on the satire, it gets annoying to me after a while. We also don't know what he's going to be like when he's out of "character". That remains to be seen. I don't think they will pull an "Arsenio move" on Colbert.

I thought it was George Lopez who came out with the announcement. Yes, that was a sinnister move doing that on national TV and then canceling the show in a way that Arsenio won't be able to at least close out the show or whatnot.

By the way, can anyone confirm if Arsenio wears a hair piece? I noticed that when he wears hats, he has no hair on the side at all and then when he's on the show he's got hair on top and on the sides that's very visible. His sides are covered up by all of his hats and he always wears hats when he's not in the studio...

Sounds about right. Although, this show was a hit and miss. Oprah's channel should pick it up, I think it would do well.

Let's face it. The show sucked. I like Arsenio but I think he just did not have the right people around him.

The show was just now getting its mojo. How any TV show especially a talk show is only given ONE season to get an audience.
