Tina Turner Gives Up United States Citizenship January 25, 2013, 12:50 p.m.
Tina Turner wants to become a Swiss citizen, and love has everything to do with it.
If you've been wondering what the iconic diva has been up to lately, she's been living in Kuesnacht, a Zurich suburb, since 1995.
A Swiss paper wrote Friday that the 73-year-old had been granted citizenship, according to the Associated Press. The Nutbush, Tenn.-born singer has passed a local civics test and interview. "I'm very happy in Switzerland and I feel at home here.... I cannot imagine a better place to live," Turner said in Blick, a German newspaper.
The singer wanted to "clarify her situation," Turner's rep told the Swiss newspaper Zuerichsee-Zeitung.
"Tina Turner will therefore also give back her U.S. citizenship," her rep said.
But the decision still needs to be approved by the Swiss state, or canton of Zurich, and federal authorities before the red passport is awarded.
Turner first went to Switzerland with German record executive Erwin Bach, her longtime music manager, and has been living with him in a lake house called Chateau Algonquin, ABC News reports The mayor of Brownsville, Tenn., of which Nutbush is an unincorporated area, told FOX411 she was "surprised" when she learned of Turner's decision.
"Tina Turner — as she has gotten worldwide fame — has never forgotten her roots," Mayor Jo Matherne said.
"I think anytime a person, whether they're world-renowned or the most meek and mild, makes the decision to change their citizenship we need to step back and think what causes that decision," she added.
Turner, born Anna Mae Bullock, rose to fame as part of a music duo with husband Ike Turner. Their tumultuous relationship, which included domestic abuse allegations, launched her solo career in the 1970s and she kept her husband's last name. She filed for divorce in 1974, and the 14-year marriage officially ended in 1978.

Might as well, since she's rarely in the states anyway. Glad that she's happy.

Why not dual citizenship? Is that not allowed under Swiss or US law?
Switzerland is a nice place for a person of her age, I can see why. Low taxes, too
For anybody under 50 Switzlerand is a boooooring place. In my opinion of course!

I'm actually surprised she kept her U.S. citizenship for as long as she has...

some people are making a huge deal about this on tv, etc.....but i think it's her life, and i don't see what's so wrong with it. some american's can't seem to understand why some people are happier living abroad. be kind, be a friend, not a bully.

Good old Uncle Sam wants his cake and to eat it as well, she still pays U S taxes plus Swiss taxes. I don't know if it's true that if she gives up her American citizenship to avoid taxes she won't be allowed back into the country but it will be difficult for her to try. Jeux Sans Frontiers

Unless she decided to tour there, I doubt she would entertain visiting there. Besides, she's been living in Europe for 27 years and Switzerland in particular for at least 18 years. Tina has always said she felt home in Europe and it seems she's finally found a permanent home in Switzerland. Good for her, I say. That said, Tina's rep is still trying to clarify this story...lol

One of the few "dual" citizens i know is David Soul, who lives most of his time in London as has for a long time, he still retains his US citizenship, because he needs it for any type of work he is offered over here, basically this puts a nail in the coffin of Tina doing much here again, simply because its a pain in the ass getting visa's etc...not that she is touring or recording at all so thats not really an issue.
Though this is kinda what people were getting on BONO about moving his offices into another country because of a cheaper tax code, what people failed to mention is that he wasnt "getting around paying taxes" he still has to pay on any money made in Ireland and property in Ireland that he owns etc...as will Tina "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

Well Tina did say the last tour was her "thank you" to those who had been supporting her for over 40 years so she was pretty much done anyway. Like I said, I don't blame her. I knew a move like this meant she will never do another musical album because that requires to be in the U.S. a lot. I read when Terry Gilliam of Monty Python had to give up his U.S. citizenship, he was only required to be in the country for 30 days a year, less than other British-born citizens. I understand Bono's move to Switzerland as time goes by. Same with Phil Collins but I doubt Tina is becoming a full-fledged Swiss citizen for that reason. But maybe it's a part of it, who knows?

Is that her niece or grandchild? I'm guessing visits to America for those who become Switzerland citizens is different from other countries?

no i didnt think she was trying to escape tax codes cause you really cant, she would still owe on any money earned here despite citizneship, if she earns it here it has to be paid here, which is why i never understood why people got on U2 for moving business residence, they werent ripping off ireland they still pay tons of tax there, its just the headquarters are elsewhere, alot of people do that.
I agree that Tina has pretty much resigned from the business of new music, much like Billy Joel did back in 1993 and Phil Collins has done now also because of medical reasons. I figured that. Tina's just really happy to live there. I don't blame her. I read Robert Palmer moved to Switzerland due to it being more comfortable and peaceful (he initially moved out of the Bahamas because of its crime rate). Some Tina fans admit it was a matter of time. That also means Tina is serious this time about this being her last of anything. And really I rather her to enjoy her peace. She's almost 74 years old and had been in the industry for 50 years, she earned the retirement (and full citizenship) in a European country.

It most certainly is allowed, but Tina is choosing to renounce her US citizenship. I don't get why some would be up in arms about it, as a lot of people end up leaving their country of birth and becoming a citizen of somewhere else permanently. Plenty of people moved to the US and found their dream life, but her story is the reverse Tina is happier in Switzerland...
anyway, in regards to taxes, it might save her money in the long run but there will likely be some consequences. I have a friend who works in this field. He said she'll probably have a huge "exit tax" which is a tax on every property she owns (basically they pretend you're selling everything you own). Also, there will be a big inheritance tax on the money she leaves to her children upon her death (assuming they are still US citizens). Finally, she'll probably need visas if she wants to visit the US in the future. Most countries make it difficult for people to renounce citizenship and if you're rich, look out
I think Tina renouncing her citizenship is more symbolic than anything. She didn't have a happy life here and found her happiness elsewhere. As others said, this basically means she's done working in entertainment, except for maybe a sporadic performance or interview every now and then.

You forget Americans here are very fickle and are not too good with information. I knew since Tina was in her 40s that she preferred Europe over the States. In fact, check her interviews from 1985 until now, they're all like "I love Europe, I feel like home here. I don't ever wanna go back to America". The last quote she said defiantly so in her "60 Minutes" interview from 2000 prior to going on the road for her last stadium tour (her 50th anniversary concert took place in arenas only if I'm not mistaken, but I need to check).
TMZ got dummies saying stupid shit about it. Some folks on Tumblr are posting stupid reaction gifs to it but Tina said it for 100 years she preferred Europe over the United States. She even said she's gonna die in Europe. So this was long in coming that she finally say "au revoir USA" in fact she said it in 1985.

its the TMZ era, i mean a Youtube video that claims Obama organized the school shooting in CT in december to get people riled up about guns is why this country freaks me the fuck out! I mean that is scary that 11 million watched it, now its mainly curious people but even if 1% people believe that im fucking scared.
As for Tina she was big in england prior to the whole Private Dancer blow up again, she was always more into the brits anwyay, I mean she was hanging with Mick and David and Rod Stewart, people think that the USA is the only place you can have a music career....AND please dont let me get the facts on how so many dont even need america, ask QUEEN about the good ole USA and if they needed it to become one of the biggest sellers ever, or ask jersey boys Bon Jovi who from 1992 till this day are the biggest international selling band and the USA is a minor minor part of it.
So she loves it there, big deal. I mean look at Amerie she does the same thing, MYA lived in japan for a bit etc...as MAGS from a-ha said, "U go where U are appreciated" "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

Knowing that she would have to compete on the charts with the likes of Rhianna, Lady Ga Ga and Nicki Manageri, I don't blame her. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley
