I am new to this working out stuff. I just started in August for the first time in my life. I am having issues with soreness in muscles and sore/stiff knees. I don't want to hurt myself and go off track but I know that it is normal to have soreness etc after weight training. Question: Do you all take Motrin or some other non inflammatory OTC med to take care of pain and swelling following an intense workout?

I am no expert, but I don't think that you should have pain & swelling. Soreness & muscle fatigue is good. I don't know about the rest. Maybe poor form?

Where's Uptown when you need him???

I drink lots of cherry juice with high fruit content when my muscles are sore. And I give the sore muscle group at least 48 hours of rest, or more when necessary. A trip to the steam room helps as well.

Some pain is quite normal after a long phase of not working out. I work out regularly and even I have pain in my muscles sometimes, and sometimes in my joints, too. I think there are multiple reasons for this, like age, wrong form, unusual workouts, hydration, rest, overtraining, lack of certain nutrients etc.etc.

But all in all, I think not working out at all because of a fear of soreness is much worse than having sore muscles and stiff joints. Speak with your doctor and keep on doing what you´re doing.

Exercise is GOOD for you, keeps you young, strong and healthy.

okay thanks for the tips everyone. I didn't know about the cherry juice. I will try that. I have been told to drink seltzer water, and gatorade. i have tried both. I still feel like I'm going to kiel over when I try to get up from all the soreness and cramping that goes on in my arms and legs. I know that is to be expected.,

What I am mainly worried about are my knees. I am doing eliptical, floor weight training and spinning class. Mostly spinning class. I don't want to mess up my knees. I do not have "bad knees" and don't want to get them.

So my thought is if my joints are sore to take Motrin. But I'm not sure if having sore knees after "low impact" exercise is to be expected.

I don't want to hurt myself. I will change exercises if my activities are going to wear down my knees.

QUESTION: Is spinning a low impact exercise???

Thanks again for advice.

BTW, I know I am not going to quit working out. I lost 25 pounds and 1 dress size since August 1.

I don't know if spinning is considered "low impact" but I can tell you that the one time I tried it I thought I was gonna die. I should try it again.

Like you said, maybe it's poor form, or using too much weight, not warming up properly, overtraining or not getting enough rest.

With my workout schedule, I get soreness, but not serious pain. When I do feel something's wrong, I just cut back( like I did when my knees started hurting from max squats).

thanks guys. I am loving the Org even more now that I am in the GD forum. biggrin

I have soreness but not serious pain. I guess I'm being a baby. After my workout and about an hour's drive my muscles have stiffened and walking causes soreness.

But my knees are another thing. Not serious pain but soreness. However I am worried because it is a joint. I know people who were runners and they have serious pain in knees and need knee replacement surgery.

I do NOT want that happening to my knees. So I am thinking maybe Joint Juice or some other joint remedy. I want to PREVENT a problem from occuring.

If spinning is high impact sport then I will look into something else.

I LOVE it. I do 3 -4 classes a week.

I have lost about 25 pounds since August 1. I think it was due to the spin classes.

I'm reading Joel Osteen's "I Declare". It's 31 declarations about God's greatness and ability. Today's declaration was about how God can accelerate anything.

I had set a personal fitness goal that I didn't think I'd reach for months, if ever. But guess what?

This morning I benchpressed 306 pounds.

First time I've ever hit 300. My previous best was 276.

God is great!

rolleyes fishslap I don't usually bench, but my max was one rep @ 135. confused

When I can do that for three sets, I'll be happy. Last week I pushed out 125lbs for 3 reps.

(btw; how do you get 306lbs on the bar? My gym has 45lb bars & plates @ 2.5, 5, 10, 25 & 45lbs)

Recent developments have killed my "February in Miami" plans - but I'm still trying to stick to the "flat abs" goal. Maybe not by February, but definitely by summertime. I'm eating half-portions and next week I'm joining Planet Fitness with my buddy at work. Last year I made decent gains going with him 3x a week.

I have been terrible since I started my new job. Up super early getting son off to school then about 9 hours at work and so tired so I go straight home after. And then I was usually out of town on the weekends with my bf.

It's really no excuse, though.

I haven't gained any weight thankfully and someone asked me last week if I had lost some weight - I have not.

So, I'll get through this week (we are in the busiest time of the year) then I'll force myself to hit the gym every day after work.

So hard to start up again, but I'll do it.

I'm on the market again so I better try and look the best I can. lol

Here's the machine and weights I did it on. The bars weigh 18 pounds apiece, so add 36 pounds to the total weights. (I called the manufacturer to verify the weight of the bars.)

Three 45-pound plates per side is 270 pounds in weights, plus 36 pounds for the bar, equals 306 pounds.

God is great!

thumbs up!

Gotcha.

Do you prefer the machine as opposed to a real bench w/ bar?
