Police: Snowball fight led to girl's shooting

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (AP) -- A man whose daughter was hit with a snowball by a group of girls returned to the scene and opened fire with a gun, critically wounding a 10-year-old youngster, police said.

Joseph Best, 32, was arrested Monday and jailed on charges including attempted murder.

The victim was in critical condition with a head wound.

Best's daughter was hit with a snowball as she and her friends walked past a group of girls having a "friendly snowball fight" Sunday, police Capt. Charles Bloom said.

A scuffle then broke out among the dozen or so girls, who ranged in age from 10 to 15. The groups soon parted ways, but Best returned with an older daughter and another brawl erupted, this time between adult relatives of both groups, Bloom said.

Police broke up that fight, but said Best came back again hours later, leaned out the passenger side of a moving car and fired at least five shots into the group of children still playing on the street. Authorities were trying to determine who was driving.

Police said the girl who was shot had been inside during the scuffles.

"This little girl had nothing to do with anything. She wasn't involved in the fight," Bloom said. "He just seemed to be randomly shooting into the crowd."

It could not be immediately determined Wednesday if Best had a lawyer.

Nah don't kill him. Once he gets sentenced to prison I'm sure the other prisoners will make him pay. Crimes involving children don't go over too well in jail.

18 dead in German school shooting


The Gutenberg school is well-known in Erfurt

Eighteen people died when an expelled former pupil went on a shooting spree at his school in the eastern German city of Erfurt.
Masked and dressed in black, the gunman walked through classrooms killing 14 teachers, two schoolgirls and one of the first policemen on the scene before taking his own life.



He was clothed completely in black and you could only see his eyes.

Pupils of the Gutenberg School spent four hours trapped inside before police could declare the building safe.

Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder described the massacre in the quiet provincial city as "beyond the powers of the imagination".

As four other victims were being treated in hospital, people gathered in the city for a church service in the evening.
Pupils also tried to get help using their mobile phones


It is the worst school massacre in Europe since the 1996 shooting in Dunblane, Scotland, when a deranged gunman killed 16 children, a teacher and himself.

BBC Berlin correspondent Rob Broomby says the incident is also the worst of its kind in Germany's post-war history.

The German authorities have not given the name of the Erfurt killer but they said he was a 19-year-old who had been expelled from the school several months earlier and told he could not sit his university entrance exam.

the Erfurt-massacre was outstanding in its case. Its the biggest amok-run in history, true. But its somewhat untypical for Germany, thats why it shocked the Germans as much as 9/11 did shock Americans.
It was the only school-amok we ever had.
We have have never had one single drive-vy shooting in Germany.
We have less murders in the whole country in one year than in LA in one week.
Assuming that one single amok run would set standards for the violance and crime in one nation is absolutely wrong.
