Police: Snowball fight led to girl's shooting

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (AP) -- A man whose daughter was hit with a snowball by a group of girls returned to the scene and opened fire with a gun, critically wounding a 10-year-old youngster, police said.

Joseph Best, 32, was arrested Monday and jailed on charges including attempted murder.

The victim was in critical condition with a head wound.

Best's daughter was hit with a snowball as she and her friends walked past a group of girls having a "friendly snowball fight" Sunday, police Capt. Charles Bloom said.

A scuffle then broke out among the dozen or so girls, who ranged in age from 10 to 15. The groups soon parted ways, but Best returned with an older daughter and another brawl erupted, this time between adult relatives of both groups, Bloom said.

Police broke up that fight, but said Best came back again hours later, leaned out the passenger side of a moving car and fired at least five shots into the group of children still playing on the street. Authorities were trying to determine who was driving.

Police said the girl who was shot had been inside during the scuffles.

"This little girl had nothing to do with anything. She wasn't involved in the fight," Bloom said. "He just seemed to be randomly shooting into the crowd."

It could not be immediately determined Wednesday if Best had a lawyer.

I am thinking that your logic skills are lacking, as the perpetrator of this heinous act has been captured, arrested and incarcerated for his crimes, therefore I could not be the assailant, as I am not incarcerated and I live in Texas.

Once again, you make it sound as if all countries have equal footing when it comes to population and the socio-economic gap. The US has a much bigger population than other Western countries, so it stands to reason that the percentage of violence would go up.

So you are saying the bigger the population, the bigger the percentage of violent crimes? Sorry, but it doesnt work that way. The equasion would be: The bigger the population, the bigger the NUMBER of crimes. In this case you'd be correct, and I wouldnt object.
But just because a country has a larger population it doesnt mean that the percentage of crimes will go up. Thats socio-economical bull. Then China would have, talking about the percentage, a higher crime rate then the US. But they indeed have less murders (dont ask me for the numbers, I have read something on that a while ago).

There are plenty of places in the US where such violence is almost unheard of (as you claim it is in Germany).

No objection either. But isnt it a fact that the acceptance of dangerous handguns and the acceptance of violence in society, as on TV, in movies,etc. is being reflected in the statistics?

Its not really a fair comparison.

Yes it is. If you compare two countries and you say (giving a fictive example):
- In the US 5 percent of all citizens will die of a heart attacl

- In Spain 10 percent of all citizens will die of a heart attack

It is a fair comparism that has nothing to do with the size of the population, but with socio-economical, and in this fictice case, environmental circumstances.

Your experience as a journalist is based on a very narrow worldview, in my opinion.

You are entitled to your opinion. But how come that some Americans constantly claim what you do here, when all I am doing is criticizing your government? Isnt it those people who say "Its all good, we believe everything Bush tells us" (giving an extreme opinion to make my point) who are actually having a very narrowminded worldview?
I have lived in the US for many years, so I think I can feel your country. And I have been travelling to many of the nations the US has been taken to war, and I have seen the results of those actions. Is that presenting a narrowminded view in your opinion?

I do not condone what that man did. I also think that killing him is not the answer. Who has the right to take another persons life? No one. Not even if they have killed someone themselves.

True, there is some neo-nazi activity in Germany, just like in any other country. But because of Germany's tough laws opposing such activity, and because of the good education on the subject, its is below the average. The US, for example, have a higher neo-nazi activity than Germany.
However, American mass media never gets tired to report about one of the skinhead incidents and blow them up in the news, so it looks like the Nazis still pose an immediate danger. I had some brothers and sisters visiting me here from America, and they were scared at first because they thought it would be dangerous for them because of their skin color...
