I saw The Descendants. I hated that movie with every fiber of my being.

Over the weekend:
Once Upon A Time In The West (1968) - Harmonica playing gunman confronts a railroad tycoon's enforcer in the American Old West. This is the best western I have ever seen.
Night Watch (2004) - Two clans of Russian supernaturals race to recruit a boy that is prophesized to tip the balance of power. Convoluted with excessive special effects.
Day Watch (2006) - Night Watch agent tries to change his past before the battle between competing supernatural clans destroy Moscow.

I know most people who have seen it love it, but one dissenting opinion by critic Owen Gleiberman put my reservations best in his review:
The problem I have with Melancholia is that before you reach that artsy-poetic armageddon punchline, you have to sit through a whole lot of not-very-convincing family psychodrama. The film's entire first hour is set at a wedding that takes place in a ludicrously extravagant lakeside chalet, and everything that happens feels false and slightly hysterical.
Kirsten Dunst is the bride, who before her marriage to True Blood's Alexander Skaarsgard has even gotten under way, has already plunged into a stultifying depression. But why don't any of her family members look upon her with a trace of compassion? Von Trier hasn't staged a convincing wedding, or, for that matter, a compelling version of depression. He's concocted a misanthropic cartoon centered on a dysfunctional bride who, despite Dunst's bristly and intriguing performance, walls off all identification with her.

Wow.
It always fascinates me how two (or three or more) people can watch the same thing and experience it so very differently. I basically think the opposite of every single word that critic wrote, lol.
At least Von Trier always gets some kind of reaction out of people, and that by itself is an accomplishment.

Against my better judgment, I watched I Hate Valentine's Day over the weekend. (There was nothing on, so I got it from the free movies in OnDemand.)
What a steaming pile of We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

This is the last movie I saw in the theater, and I loved it. It stayed with me for a very long time. I still think about it and ponder it. I thought it was fantastic.

Very dark satire on the life of an upwardly mobile black American family in the early 70's; and about becoming all the things which you thought you despise. Whoopi and Danny work easy and well together in this onscreen reuinion as a husband and wife. Spike Lee had his hand in this production so you can see bits and pices of his influence throughout.

i've been on a 1980s horror movie kick lately. waxwork is a classic example of the sweet spot of 80s horror movie classics, the years from 1985 to 1990.
waxwork is shamelessly campy, tongue in cheek humor combined with cheesy special effects. it would be a bit over the top but the plot is creative. i loved it when the villagers showed up, pitchforks and rakes in hands, to do battle with the monsters.

My Week With Marilyn (2011) - Young production assistant becomes friends with Marilyn Monroe while she is in England filming a movie with Laurence Olivier.

Marilyn must be a near-impossible role to do, but at least Michelle Williams has the effortless femininity going for her. Do you think she did a good job?

There were a couple of dry moments here and there but otherwise an enjoyable movie. I give it 3 out of 5
Larenz Tate is sexy as hell! I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!
RIP Dick Clark, Whitney Houston, Don Cornelius, Heavy D, and Donna Summer. ![]()

I think she did a great job. Not that I really know what Marilyn was like outside of her films, but it seemed very genuine with a lot of depth to me. Kenneth Branagh as Laurence Olivier was excellent as well.

3/5 not too bad, some parts were better than others. Now I feel I'm ready for the Avengers.

The Ides of March (2011) - Presidential candidate's campaign manager considers playing dirty to salvage his career. A little predictable, but I very much enjoyed it.

The Descendants (2011) - Father and daughters become closer while mother is in a coma. Too saccharine for me.
