Looking forward to seeing The Artist. It's definitely at the top of my must see in the theater list.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Went and saw We Bought A Zoo with some family yesterday. ............ neutral ................. I'm a fan of Cameron Crowe, Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson, Thomas Hayden Church... shoot... even Angus McFayden, but this movie just didn't do it for me. Too unbelievable and shmaltzy (really, that's a great word for this movie, shmaltzy). I won't spoil it, but for those who prefer even the tiniest amount of realism in thier family movies or love stories, there's a couple of scenes that just DESTROY the believability factor. One in particular that they could have easily done in a believable way that would have made a huge difference.

Did it suck? No. It was watchable. But it's not on the same level as Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous or even Singles. I've got to go 4 out of 10. Below average.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In Time - About what I expected, but I really enjoyed it as a high concept Sci-Fi movie. Could have been better and it's probably not for everyone, but definitely a decent film. It gets an average 6 out of 10

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Submarine - what a strange little movie. I really liked it, but I may have to watch it again to decide how much of it sticks. I dug the surreal, dream-like, living inside of Oliver's head quality. And I was incredibly pleased with the ending, which doesn't happen all that often these days. 7 out of 10, for now.

I forgot Drive. Watched it for a second time. Great movie, loved it. Loved the atmosphere, acting, casting, cinematography, music, lighting. Loved it. Not sure too much should be said about it other than letting people know ahead of time that you're quiet fascination will be shattered by sudden scenes of extreme violence (I watched it with someone who found this pretty upsetting lol ). 8.5 out of 10.

Don't know why, but I'm sorta in the mood to watch this:

Venetian hooker becomes beloved 16th century Renaissance poet, and in doing so pisses off her would-be competition-come-stalkerish-nerd-paramour-reject and is tried by the Catholics for witchcraft (when aforementioned reject douchebag rises to power in the church). Loosely based on the life of Italian poet Veronica Franco.

I agree, a great movie, probably one of the best of 2011. I've already pre-ordered it on Blu-ray. I rented Warrior the other night. Great movie as well, had a Rocky feel to it. I had no idea Tom Hardy is actually British. I think that guy is the next big thing. He's currently filming the remake of Mad Max.

A Better Tomorrow (2010)

[img:$uid]http://images1.asianmediawiki.com/images/thumb/d/d8/A_Better_Tomorrow-KRemake-p2.jpg/250px-A_Better_Tomorrow-KRemake-p2.jpg[/img:$uid]

I have become hooked on this movie. I've watched it four times in less than six weeks. Just got the Blu-Ray in the mail yesterday, so watched it last night. Looks so much better than Netflix.

Btw, for those who know the movie, this is the John Woo Executive Produced, Korean remake of the Hong Kong John Woo film of the same name.

  1. "Mukeokja" is a remake of John Woo's 1986 film "A Better Tomorrow".
  2. Korean title "Mujeokja" has two different meanings:
    1. no opponent to compete
    2. no country

Hah, I did not feel the need to post before today since the closest thing to a movie I saw while in Europe was 30 minutes or so of Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps one morning on French TV. It was one of the few films broadcast on telly that was subtitled instead of dubbed in French. If I was French and lived over there, I'd be annoyed by that. I can't stand watching dubbed films.

In Bruges (2008) - Two Irish hitmen spend a forced holiday in Bruges, Belgium after a botched job. I can't recommend this movie enough--very funny, yet very sad and very irreverent. It's one of my favorite Christmas movies ever. star star star star star

I've seen it three times. Very good. I'd say humorous more than funny. Definitely not a comedy although at times it plays like one naturally.

You are right in that humorous is a better description of the movie. I don't like comedies so if it was straight up funny, it would not have appealed to me as much.

I spent a day in Bruges over the holidays and saw a few of the things referenced in the movie. Loved it.

Melancholia (2011) - Typical Lars von Trier downer about a pair of sisters facing the end of the world. There is a lot to like about this film in terms of imagery, mood and overall sense of style, but ultimately, it left me a little cold. star star star 1/2 (out of five)

I haven't seen this yet, but I did love Dogville. Tried to watch Antichrist, but read the reviews first which made me fast forward to see some of those shocking parts, I don't think I'll be revisiting that film anytime some, too much artistic-ness for my taste. Where does this movie rank in between the 2 if at all.

It's very dreamy like Antichrist, but without the graphic parts. Dogville to me was more like Dancer In The Dark--very manipulative.

What an odd woman. I have no doubt that she's guilty, but she talks so damn much that you get mesmerized and start to believe her. Definitely recommended viewing. 7 out of 10 - could have been a little higher but there's not a lot of production to it.

I saw these in the cinema last year and gave them both an 8/10. Tabloid was a fascinating story. I suppose my rating was more of the subject matter than the actual film. lol I liked the quirkiness of Submarine more than I thought I would. I only really saw it for Sally Hawkins of whom I've become a fan ever since Happy-Go-Lucky. mushy

Haven't read the Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy book or seen the previously filmed version (tv show?), but I'm definitely looking forward to seeing the new one.

Looking forward to The Grey quite a bit, as well.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have The Guard here waiting to be watched. May put that one on next since everybody seems to be liking it so much.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Source Code Muddled, nonsensical mess with three endings, all of which sucked. At the beginning I really wanted to like this movie. About an hour in I was losing interest. By the end I was pissed off. lol 2 our of 10

Kill List eek Whoa. What the hell did I just watch? Anybody else seen this crazy thing? Very interesting and extremely tense in places, but it was damn near impossible to tell what people were saying half the time (they're speaking English) and once the movie was over I realized that it really didn't make one damn bit of sense. Nobody has any real motivation for anything that they're doing, and the twist at the end was not only obvious from 1000 miles away, but it served no real purpose. Still, for originality and the "what is going on?!" fascination factor I'll give it 6 out of 10. Average, but certainly not for everyone.

I've decided you're a projectionist for a small indie theater. Spending hour upon hour in a small projection booth, inhaling the scent of real film, splicing and winding the day away. The theather probably only has one or two screens. Seats are old and slightly uncomfortable, floor a little bit permanently sticky, but that only adds to the charm of the place. .... no, no.... don't try and tell me otherwise! talk to the hand That's how you shall be pictured hence forth.

Wasn't sure who Sally Hawkins was, had to look her up. She's in Layer Cake! biggrin Cerebus loves that movie. Have Made In Dagenham here, too, but I've never watched it. Added Happy-Go-Lucky to the list. nod

Two more. Neither of which I thought I would like...

50/50 Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Anna Kendrick and Anjelica Huston are so good that I could almost completely overlook Seth Rogen. I don't dislike Rogen, I just don't understand why he can't pull it back a few notches. Why does every movie he's in have to have him being loud, talking fast, trying to be ten times hipper than his character should be? Still, a very touching movie. It actually pulled at my heart strings a little, and those strings are damn hard to find through all the baggage that's piled up in front of them. 7, maybe 7.5 out of 10

30 Minutes of Less Meh. Turned out to be pretty much exactly what I expected. Had a few funny ideas, lines and gags, but the over the top absurdist stuff at the end fell completely flat for me. And what in the shit about anything that happened was romantic enough to make THAT girl want to get back together with THAT guy? lol 5 out of 10

About as bad as I have always heard it was. No plot or dialog to speak of. Nonetheless, it does have the feel of the early Beatles movies, particularly Help which for all intents and purposes had no plot.

And some of the music is quite good, not surprisingly, but what was surprising was the fact that I liked the "newer" music almost as much as the older music.

Still, it's something of a cop out that 90% of the music is not made especially for the movie. Still, despite the cheese, paul sure knows how to write a melody, and throw in Ringo and George Martin and you've got something.

that's precisely why I really liked the film too. the writing's fantastic. loved how it set the tone right from the start that all feared cliches will be there only even more dramatized, which made it instantly exciting for me, and what's greater is it was all done in dry humour where you could rarely ever predict what's to be said next (like that shark lover for one lol)
